Off to a flying start when David Letterman crashes Nets Media Day asking Stupid Human Questions of Kevin Durant. It goes.....awkwardly.

It is very sad when a self-indulgent person tries to inject himself into a (media) situation.

What exactly, did Letterman ever have to do with either professional basketball or sports reporting?

How did he get into that event in the first place?

Those are the loudest handful of assholes on the internet talking about how they're leaving their jobs because of the *gasp* tyranny. The voiceless are on nightly on OANN, FOX and Newsmax. Re: Brooklyn Nets 2021-22

Irving's fiercely individual worldview, his eccentricity, and his unapologetic commitment to his beliefs have always seemed to go hand in hand with the idea of the NBA as a league that put its superstars above everything—above teams, above outdated norms of the sport, sometimes above the game itself. The same sense of outsized agency that allowed Irving to walk away from LeBron James's shadow and maneuver his own superteam into being in Brooklyn has also allowed him, at times, to call the NBA's social and political foundations into question. But wielding that kind of influence also confers an obligation not to use it frivolously, and it's there, on the “don't blow up basketball to take a messianic stand over a couple of weird memes you saw on Facebook” front, that Irving runs the risk of going awry.

It was impressive when he pushed for the league to cancel the 2020 bubble season in the name of racial justice. But now that same instinct for standing on principle is leading him to … insist on his right to play basketball … in a public space … where there's a higher chance to infect an at-risk person with a potentially fatal virus … even though he is not personally opposed to the vaccine that could defeat this virus … but only determined to preserve his “voice”? Really? The Nets are set to pay him more than $18 million in the coming season even if he sits out every game. I like Irving and want to understand this from his perspective (help me, Kyrie!), but it's extremely easy right now to see him as a powerful, coddled person who's confused his own quirks for a compelling argument.

Re: Brooklyn Nets 2021-22

Great insights on the Harden-Nash symbiosis (excerpted from the subscription-based Athletic).

“We are twins,” Harden said. “We're just different colors.”

But even twins have their own distinctions. Harden's beard rivals Santa's, while Nash's face is as scruffless as a New York Yankee. And as Nash alluded to, Harden (6-5, 220) is built like a linebacker, while he (6-3, 178) looks more like a shortstop.

“Steve had to do it by his vision and by setting people up with agility more than James has to,” D'Antoni said of his two proteges. “Because James can just go right through you.”

Just like he was a coach on the floor as a player, Nash has given Harden the freedom to do the same. The 32-year-old guard was playing like an MVP candidate last year before a hamstring strain derailed his season. Nash said his priority with Harden has been getting him healthy for this season because his greatness won't be on display unless he's fit for an extended time. Then they can talk about what to refine, if anything, with his game.

But when they are together, Harden said they've found each other to be subconsciously on the same page. As they say, twins share a brain. Harden was on a road trip with the Nets last May when Nash had a team film session. It stuck with Harden the rest of the day. He called Nash that night to talk it over, only to discover his coach was still pondering the film session. They talked about it for 15 to 20 minutes, and Harden said the calls continued into the offseason.

“He sees the game at a different level,” Harden said of Nash. “Like summertime, he calls me, I call him and we're just talking about how can we be better. He just has that constant communication with me like I know you saw this, but maybe look at this next time. Just things like that to where somebody has a second eye all the time of what's going on and things that I can do better, and ultimately, that's going to better our team.”

For Nash, he picks his spots when talking shop with Harden because his basketball mind is “brilliant,” and as a coach, he tries not to teach just for the sake of it. It's become a part of his philosophy to learn when to speak up and when his players evolve on their own, a tactic he got from D'Antoni. Harden's playmaking is crucial for the success of the team. Nash doesn't want to overcoach and end up having a negative impact on his point guard's decision-making. It's the same approach Harden takes when giving advice to his teammates.

Here's to those who are here.

Brooklyn stole its first win of the season, 114-109 over the Sixers, with a strong second half Friday that erased a 14-point deficit, capped by a 29-point triple-double from Durant. LaMarcus Aldridge aided his longtime friend and fellow Texas Longhorn with 23 points off the bench and a three-point play off a dunk in the final minute to give the Nets the lead for good. The win was a thriller for a team that was still learning its personnel against Philly, which has the continuity Brooklyn envies as it still experiments with its lineups.

As I may have posted before (different player), the two best days in a boat owner's life are the day he gets it and the day he sells it.

I feel that way about Harden. Great player, can take over any game and win it for you. But if he said he didn't want to be here, I didn't want him being disruptive to the mojo of the team.

These fans should show up at every Nets game until he demonstrates that he understands the impact of what he did and does something positive about it. (Yahoo original - no link)

Suspension is for a minimum of 5 games

Marks and Tsai possibly talking to lawyers about terminating Kyrie with cause.

He may have played his last game here

The inmates were running the asylum.

The strength of the NBA is that it's a star-driven league.

The weakness of the NBA is that it's a star-driven league.

We're in an era of bullshit-as-power-play. You don't bullshit to get anybody to believe you. You bullshit to flex your authority. Point at the moon and tell people it's cheese, and you put your loyal followers to the test.

Of course, you've got to pretend that you believe it, and hell, since your power rests on making other people to repeat your bullshit back to you wholeheartedly, you've got to half believe it yourself to sell it.

As such, it can be a short walk from kinda krazy to krazy krazy.

Jacque Vaughn is a very good coach interim or not. Vaughn stepped up nicely when Kenny Atkinson got the boot

Not likely, but how about hiring Vaughn rather than the bad actor from the Celtics

I still don't see what's so great about Ben Simmons.

Jacque Vaughn is the permanent hire

They got this right

I don't see what Simmons brings to the rotation myself but...

Quick side note: in addition to being a top HS basketball player at Cold Spring Harbor HS, Walt Szczerbiak was also a terrific pitcher for their baseball team.

Is he the only pro athlete whose name has two z's that aren't together? (e.g.- Rizzo)

I can't think of any others in baseball or basketball. A hockey player?
