First-Round Fever: A Krane Pool Kwiz

A kwiz to fill in gaps during the offseason. Name Mets who were first round picks.

[fimg=600]https://sportshub.cbsistatic.com/i/r/2020/06/10/abec58d4-bcfe-444c-9aaa-a3cc0c122df5/thumbnail/1200x675/3a45e412d96a83a6440d2ecff53796b3/mlb-draft-first-round-2020.jpg[/fimg]

KWIZ RULEZ
•
One guess per post, no consecutive guessing.

  •
A first-rounder is only a first-rounder if he's picked in the June amateur draft of (mostly) US players, begun in 1965. At various times, this draft has included Canadians or not included Canadians, included Puerto Ricans or not included Puerto Ricans, but the purpose and the pool of players has remained relatively constant.

  •
Not included will be first-rounders from the old January supplemental draft or other supplemental amateur drafts that have existed or not existed over that period. Junebugs only.

  •
Supplemental picks that teams are given at the end of the first round are variously described as first-rounders, 1a picks, or sandwich-round picks. For the purposes of this quiz, we will treat these as legit first-rounders.

  •
A guy drafted by the Mets in the first round only counts if he has actually played for the big club. What we're looking for here is Mets.

  •
Scoring:
•
A respondent will receive three (3) points for correctly naming a first rounder who played for the Mets after being drafted by the Mets.

  •
Naming a player who played for the Mets after being drafted by a different major league organization nets the competitor five (5) points.

  •
You lose one (-1) point for every incorrect guess.

  •
Three (3) extra points are yours if you name a Met who was not only a first rounder, but an OVERALL #1. Similarly (3) extra points can be gleaned if name a Met who was selected in the first round TWICE
  •
•
Bonus Scoring: This part will be either the glory or undoing of this quiz. Whenever somebody gets a correct answer, the quizmaster will STOP THE KWIZ and present a BONUS QUESTION, to the person who just answered correctly AND ONLY THAT PERSON. Correctly answering this question results in all or part of a ten(10)-point bonus for that contestant. These bonus questions may be related to first-round picks, or merely Mets related, or possibly related to nothing at all.
•
Frequently, revealing correct answers in the regular competition may reveal correct BONUS ROUND answers, or vice-versa, so pay attention.
  •
•
Any guesses submitted while a correct respondent was answering his or her bonus question will not be fielded by the quizmaster until after the bonus is completed.

  •
Don't cheat and look things up. You know who you are, and God sees all.
  •
Due to the volume of correct answers, presenting the data of correct and incorrect answers as well as scoring may prove problematic. Additionally, stopping mid-play to present a bonus question segment almost GUARANTEES to send the game sideways. Management thanks you for your patience.

Previously, smart money was on BatMagadanLeadoff to conquer all challengers in this contest, but he seems to be sitting October out, so this kwiz is ANYBODY'S GAME.

Let us commence. Name a Met who was an MLB first-round draft pick.

Seawolf hits the board first with a Mets #1 overall pick! Six points with a chance for 10 more!

Seawolf's bonus question! Over the 60 seasons of New York Mets action, what is the average number of first rounders the team has fielded in each season?

This is not an easy question, as we are looking for the answer rounded to the nearest hundredth! So we need an answer like 3.64 or 14.93! Good luck!

Ten points can be tough booty to corral, and so that question stays on the board. Good news is that there is no negative for getting a bonus wrong.

If it comes up again, please know that Seawolf was low in his estimate.

Next comes Frayed Knot, who has correctly chosen Francisco Lindor, the eighth-overall pick selected in 2011 by the future Cleveland Guardians.

What makes this interesting to me is that the even if you have a marginal career, you seemingly still get chances because that first-round brand maybe sticks to you. If a team has to choose between two journeymen for their 25th slot, and all else seems equal, they maybe tend to go with the former first rounder, if only because his scouting file is bigger.

Bonus question answer: I'm going to guess 1974. Those bad late 1970s and early 1980s Mets teams were filled with last chances and "take-a-flyer" guys, and it seems like players drafted in the early 1970s would have progressed and been given up on by the later years.

So here's how we're doing the bonus questions: We have fifty. We spin the wheel and whatever comes up, comes up. As folks answer any questions correctly, I've been adding new onez to keep the number at fifty.

Part of the idea is to return to some of the more enigmatic questions so incorrect answers can lead to correct ones. So, yeah, it's probably not a good idea to look up a question a colleague missed when we may get that ourselves question later. Good on Chad for passing honorably.

Chad's new bonus question: Most first rounders in recent years still have most of their futures ahead of them, but some classes are never going to pan out. Which first round, before 2017, produced the lowest average bWAR among all draftees?

I have no clue on the bWAR question. I'll go with the late 80s on the basis that draft analytics were still only half baked then, if baked at all, and statistics for players who were in their prime in the 90s were skewed by steroids. Call it 1987.

Another bonus question for Chad: Which year's draft featured three consecutive first rounders who ultimately got to be Mets?

    Benjamin Grimm wrote:

    Randy Myers

This answer provided endless handwringing back at headquarters, as we reviewed rule number three.
• 3. Not included will be first-rounders from the old January supplemental draft or other supplemental amateur drafts that have existed or not existed over that period. Junebugs only.
  •
Randall K. was a number-one pick in the now-extinct June secondary phase back in 1982, reserved for a constricted pool of players who had already been drafted but were not signed. This was indeed a supplemental draft under Rule 3 above, so we cannot allow this as a correct answer. This draft did, however occur in June, and we can understand how the final sentence under Rule 3 might be taken as conflicting information. There will therefore be no section of one point from Ben's score.

Going forward, however, be forewarned. Supplemental and secondary phases dinna count, even if they are in June.

    Frayed Knot wrote:
    Ike Davis

No such handwringing was necessary in scoring this one. Ike was the Mets' top draft pick in 2008, and his name gives you three points!

This pulls you into a tie for third, as four players jockey with only two points separating them!

Your bonus question Is good ol' #41: Which Mets first-round draft choice (not necessarily a Met) was the first such draftee to receive a bonus valued at over a million dollars in 2021 figures?

We're looking for a guy who didn't necessarily get a million dollars at the time, but after adjusting for inflation and cost of living, it's 2021 equivalent would totally be over a million dollars.

First bonus question:. Beats me. 1994?

Second bonus question: it's rather shocking how few first ladies I can think of. I need to shore up my first lady knowledge, as well as my Francophone city knowledge.

I'll go early 20th century. Her name is Mrs. Edith Wilson, and she likes Woodrow, bub.

Re: First-Round Fever: A Krane Pool Kwiz

Chad shows some good spirit and mindfulness, But 1994 is a later date than we are looking for, and Edith Wilson is a later first lady than we seek.

Edith Wilson was an educated and distinguished woman, an alum of Martha Washington College, appropriately enough, but she wasn't even Wilson's first educated first lady. Woody's first wife Ellen graduated secondary school and even went on to co-ed study at The Art Students League of New York.

Sorry if clarity was lacking, but by "formally educated," we speak of attendance at institutions of primary and/or secondary education — not necessarily university-level l'arnin'.

For Frayed Knot: Which Mets first-round draft choice (not necessarily a Met) was the first such draftee to receive a bonus valued at over a million dollars in 2021 figures?

We've got to at least get our Sandy Alderson #1's all on the board and Brandon was Sandy's #1 #1! Three points for you! This pulls you away from the field and toward the leaders, giving you some breathing room in sole possession of third!

Your bonus question: Who ended George Brett's 30-game hitting streak in 1980?

    Chad ochoseis wrote:
    Zack Wheeler

A giant of a pick by a giant of an organization, Zack's trade to the Mets allowed Carlos Beltran to go west and do what he does, going a Beltranian .323 / .369 / .551 // .920 down the stretch for the 2011 Giants, who somehow missed the playoffs anyhow.

But your post is about Zack Wheeler, and Zack's status as a San Francisco first rounder has earned you five points and pulled you within seven points of the lead!!

Your bonus question: Which first round, before 2017, produced the lowest average career bWAR among all draftees?

    Philip Humber

Ashcroft gets on the board with Humbelina, who threw one complete game in his whole career and it was a perfecto!

Your bonus question: Which team, besides the Mets, drafted and signed the most future Mets in the first round?

    My next guess: Tom Veryzer!

Veryzer well done! The Detroit Tigers made Tom the #11 overall pick in 1971, and hat's five points for you and 37 years after his last game (and seven years after his early death), TV is still helping win games, garnering five points for you and boosting you out of the cellar into seventh place, where all the cool kids hang out.

Your bonus question: How many players drafted in the first round by the Mets retired without ever playing for them?

Your bonus question: How many players drafted in the first round by the Mets retired without ever playing for them?

Making some assumptions here, I'm guessing you are saying guys who went to the minors but didn't get to the majors with the Mets, as opposed to guys like Kumar Rocker, who didn't play at all in the Mets system --which would be a trick question.

So, in 56 years, knowing most of these guys with the Mets don't make it, I'm guessing 30 of the 56.

Well, Kumar didn't retire, so we're really looking for first rounders who (a) failed to graduate from the minors, or (b) graduated from the minors only after moving on to another organization.

Guessing 30 is coming in high.

What might have been if Dr. Frank Jobe had thought about harvesting tendons a few years sooner than he did? We might be talking about GG surgery and not TJ surgery. Anyway, Gary's my guess as another first round pick.

Gary might have been a first-rounder under other circumstances or other conditions. He was selected in the 11th round by Houston initially in 1965. When he didn't sign, Baltimore selected him in the first round of the January 1966 secondary phase. The Mets ultimately signed him as a third round pick in the supplemental stage of the 1967 June draft, but ultimately, he doesn't fit our criteria.

    Pat Tabler!

As unlikely as it is, you look for perennial star when you're picking in the first round. That's not what the Yankees got in Pat Tabler, who would never play for them, and who would make only one All-Star Team in his 12-year career.

But hey, if you can't get a perennial All-Star, grabbing a 12-year big-leaguer who puts up a .489 / .505 / .693 // 1.198 career mark with the bases loaded is pretty good too. And just typing his name gets you five points!

This pulls you within three points of the lead!

That's a point chopped off your score, plummeting you from third all the way down to third!

imma followup my syndergaard with a dickey. r.a. dickey.

Cy Young winner Red Ass Dickey was indeed the first round draft pick (#16 overall) for 1996 Texas Rangers. This fact nets you five lovely points! And vaults you out out of the cellar into ninth place!

metsmarathon was incorrect on 2019 being the number one-iest season in Mets history (too late) about one being the number 2008 Mets first round draft picks that never saw the show (too low), but BOTH WERE GREAT GUESSES!

OK, so I reread this whole thread to see if I missed any answers. I did this because I love you.

While I did not miss any, per se, I haven't yet gotten to nine, and intend to do that forthwith: Candelaria (Marshmallowmilkshake); Gooden (metsmarathon); Burnitz (Johnny Lunchbucket); Ankiel (Chad ochoseis); Bruce (metsmarathon); Lindor(Marshmallowmilkshake); Ventura (Chad ochoseis); Tyner (centerfield); stroman (metsmarathon)

The Amazing Bill Mazer was a legendary local New York sportscaster, as well renowned for his sports erudition as for his boring delivery.

You're zooming in quite well. Give me the nation on that solid surface in which Mazer was birthed and five points will be yours.

Also good reasoning with Harvey, who had been first taken in round three by the Angels before the Mets grabbed him in a later year. No bonus points for him, but he will be tallied as your regular guess. Ventura was only drafted once.

Sure, it would be in keeping with the nickname "Amazing." If you get the question, we will be happy to consider "International Waters," "International Airspace," or "On Board an Orbiting Satellite" as responses.

Lots of movement, especially by late entry Bob Alpacadaca! Marathon is trying to run away and hide, but he never will if he doesn't answer that Bill Mazer question!!

    Eddie Murray

As noted above, Eddie has been guessed. No points off for you, THIS TIME!!

    Hubie Brooks

Hubie amazingly got drafted SIX times, out of high school, junior college and Arizona State University. After turning down his first selection, the subsequent drafts were all secondary, but he was always a high pick. Ultimately he was waiting for a call from the Mets, who made his dream come true (AND YOURS!) when they picked him third overall in the 1978 draft!

Three points! And bonus question FUN!

You're thinking outside the shrink-rap there! Rick had played forever, and had long since faded into part-time status, but somehow showed up on the Mets in 1991 and led them in games caught. Did a half-decent job, too! As did you for remembering that Rick had been a first rounder a generation earlier, and that's why you get FIVE POINTS!

We're catching up on scoring some buttered bonus questions!

    broken open question:

    brooks & dunston

Well, that's just operating out of order. Answer the regular question first!!

Under any circumstances, no, Brooks and Dunnie are not the two Mets drafted in the regular edition first round first. Hubie would be an excellent guess, generally, as he was drafted a whole bunch of times, but back then, once you opted not to sign the first time, you fell into a secondary draft pool. We're only looking for guys picked in the first round of the primary phase of the draft.

    regular bonus question:

    178

Assuming this is the "How many first rounders have been Mets?" question, this is a healthy guess but you're coming in high. The good news is that we have a high guess and a low guess on this question. We now have a finite range of possible answers.

Well that crosses out one of your chances to attempt that question, but you still have bonitos on the board, and with them, further passes at that two-timer question.
