Francisco Lindor is a finalist for the NL Gold Glove at short, competing in voters' hearts and spreadsheets with the Giants' Brandon Crawford and the Pirates' Kevin Newman.

It's hard to believe that there are 3 pitchers who are better fielders than Jake, Marcus, and Taijuan.

I'll just take this opportunity to re-state my annual position about how I neither like, nor see the point in, the whole idea of pre-announcing 'finalists' for post-season awards.

But based on the eyeball test, I always thought Nimmo was a better CF than his corner-outfielder-out-of-his-depth rep. So I'm glad the Fielding Bible gives him some love.

Nimmo definitely seemed to take a step forward this season defensively. I think he's still ideally an LF, but he's no longer a liability in CF these days IMO. And while we're on the subject, of all the proposed IF to CF switches posed over the years [Juan Samuel, HoJo, Rosario, Reyes, etc] Baez maybe seems to have the skill set most likely to succeed. Not that you'd want to take him out of the IF, but if the situation arises ... Hell, big ol' 6' 5" Kris Bryant plays more OF than 3B these days -- including in CF -- and that felt like a much less logical transition.

HoJo could have played anywhere, including catcher. I'm not sure he'd've been particularly good anywhere, but he was a born baseballer.

It's to generate buzz, give teams something to use to promote their players. Gives the writers in the 28 cities not covering the World Series something to write about. It works!

I think it kills as much buzz as it intends to generate since the fans of those players who eventually finish 4th, 5th & 6th are being told well in advance that their guy has no shot at winning or even coming all that close.

Of less localized interest, the Cardinals have become the first team in history to win five Gold Gloves in one season. 1B Paul Goldschmidt 2B Tommy Edman 3B Nolan Arenado LF Tyler O'Neill CF Harrison Bader Somehow, they won five, and Molina wasn't one of them. The 1978 Phils won four (Boone, Schmidt, Bowa, Maddox). The BIE Mets of 1999 somehow only won two.

All-time wise, obviously YFM along with Mike Matheny, Tom Pagnozzi behind the plate and The Wizard, Renteria and Dal Maxvill at short, Gibson on the mound… Granted the OF awards are all encompassing, but the Cards seem to be missing an everyday RF GG winner. I wonder if any other franchise have 8 or all 9 positions represented by Gold Glove winners through the years.

I don't know what YFM means but I'm sure I'll figure it out by the time I submit this comment. As for all positions being represented within a franchise, the Mets are short only a catcher, and it's more than likely that Jerry Grote deserved one or two of Johnny Bench's awards, but what are you gonna do?

Three outfielders were often three centerfielders.
