Former Nationals exec who has been out of the game for a few years met with Steve Cohen last night and, according to the Post, may receive a GM offer as early as today.

Adam Cromie could get Mets GM offer after face-to-face with Steve Cohen

Re: WHO??? (Discussing Adam Cromie)

He's worked for a Law Firm since he left baseball.

A cynic (or a late night tv host) might say Cohen is talking to him about representing the team in future sexual harassment suits.

But the article says he has "kept his hand in" by representing teams in arbitration negotiations. At least he wasn't an agent like BVW where there might be favoritism or conflict of interest.

Re: WHO??? (Discussing Adam Cromie)

Why did he leave the Nats and baseball? I'm assuming it wasn't because he

texted pecker pics or hit on young interns -- so there's that!

I was kinda pulling for the Red Sox woman. Guess we'll see...

Uncle Stevie already has the money. So if he hires this guy all he'll need then is guns*.

* To, y'know, help in future trades and/or negotiations.

And if this hire doesn't work out then maybe the shit really has hit the fan.

Re: WHO??? (Discussing Adam Cromie)

He works for Jones Day which is a top-level law firm and Jones Day helped get Chris Christie out of legal trouble because of "Bridgegate". Chris Christie is (sigh) an advisor to Cohen. Cromie did not work for Jones Day at that time but he is being "dragged" on Twitter because of the connection.

Are there no real baseball people who will work for the Mets? Is there some inside info that frightens off potential candidates? I'm sure Steve Cohen is demanding but so are most other owners. Something is just 'off' here.

Re: WHO??? (Discussing Adam Cromie)

I worked for Jones Day (then known as Jones, Day, Reavis & Pogue) a lifetime ago. Whenever something went wrong, I blamed Reavis.

It's a massive, massive firm, with offices in multiple cities, but yeah, they represented President Trump in 2016 and 2020. Don McGahn left JD to become the president's White House Counsel. Dozens of former administration lawyers now call JD home. I'll just give Cromie the benefit of the doubt that he's looking to leave because of that, rather than taking that stink with him. That's wishful thinking of course.

That said, I'm all for executives who come from outside of baseball, but obviously, he's had a successful baseball career as well. I don't think anything's off there, though I agree that he looks kind of douchey. On the other hand, it's almost a requirement that if you work for a DC law firm, the thumbnail pic accompanying your bio has to make you look good and douchey.

If he's hired, Raquel Ferreira (aka Red Sox Lady) still has the PoBO job to shoot for.

Re: WHO??? (Discussing Adam Cromie)

The Athletic had a good breakdown of why they're having problems.

1) Cohen is an unknown quantity and didn't get off to a good start with his Twitter criticisms.

2) Sandy (and his son Bryn) will have an undetermined amount of control over the new hire.

3) The job may be temporary, as they really want David Stearns, the Brewers POBO. They've been denied permission to talk to him but his contract is up after 2022. So any hire would be on an extremely short leash.

Add to this the chaos in the front office since 2018, and it's not a recipe for success in a market where you're under the microscope. Given all this, it's not surprising they've had trouble finding a good candidate.

So, in typical Met fashion, their wounds are self-inflicted.

Re: WHO??? (Discussing Adam Cromie)

Davidoff in the NY Post echoes the 'Waiting for Stearns' angle although that doesn't mean Cromie couldn't stay on working underneath Stearns if/when the NYC native comes aboard a year from now.

In a separate Davidoff article he quotes Nats GM Mike Rizzo with good things to say about Cromie - although you'd hardly expect him to say anything if he thought differently after Cromie

reached out to Rizzo about the interest from NYM.

Rizzo -- “He was capable at every level that he worked for us. I think this is a natural progression for him, in a very unique way to get this.” ... “a good person from a good family. Smart guy.

He's a good guy to work with.”

The Nationals hired Cromie as a baseball operations intern in 2007 and he climbed to assistant GM by the time he departed in 2017 to pursue law full-time in his hometown of Pittsburgh.

As assistant GM in Washington Cromie “handled rules and arbitration stuff, roster placements.” The departure from the Nationals was “extremely amicable,” Rizzo added, after the club

paid for Cromie to attend law school while he kept working for Washington.

Re: WHO??? (Discussing Adam Cromie)

The Athletic is also reporting that the Mets are waiting for Stearns' contract to expire. This means a lot of Sandy (and son) this year. I hope that they have an under-the-table agreement with Stearns or they will be in the same situation next off-season.

Maybe they should hire John Stearns, too.

Re: WHO??? (Discussing Adam Cromie)

I can't imagine Cohen has built up a negative rep (or any rep) that quickly, and certainly not one that would make him less desirable to work for than the Wilpons were.

I do think that nobody wants to answer too much to Alderson, who honestly should have been the first person fired and certainly should not have been the person who conducted the search. Everything he touched turned rotten last year.

I also think publicly pursuing people who (a) are already in good situations with more accomplished teams, and (b) are under contract with said teams who might not want to see them go, was a recipe for failure.

But maybe failing to make a big splash will land them somebody who knows more than their credentials let on. Or maybe it will be another person of dubious competence and worse character.

Re: WHO??? (Discussing Adam Cromie)

I think the "WHO?" stuff is overblown as usual. He's clearly got plenty of baseball experience. Who the hell was Zack Scott? Who was Brian Cashman?

None of which says I think he's the right person for the job, but the idea that stepping away from the industry and getting outside experience should definitively make me dubious isn't happening with me.

If I've spent a few quality years in a successful organization, and I flatter myself that I'm on a GM track, and I'm even getting some sniffs from other teams, but then somebody comes in and turns the staff over, and I'm on the outside, I don't think it's necessary that I take the first jock-washing job I can get in order to stay in the industry and remain a qualified candidate. Stepping aside into corporate law or somesuch is legit experience as well. Maybe it's even experience that distinguishes me from the field.

Which, again, doesn't mean that Mr. Cromie doesn't look kind of douchey.

And while I think running with a narrative happens all the time, it's certainly not unfathomable that Cohen has already developed a bad name.

Re: WHO??? (Discussing Adam Cromie)

When you have a chance to hire your 14th favorite candidate, you have to jump on it!

I reserve judgement to see how well the new guy, whomever he might be, drives with a head full of craft beer or crashes the boards on Mrs. Met.

Re: WHO??? (Discussing Adam Cromie)

Cohen's interview with Cromie:

SC: why did you leave the Nationals?

Cromie: because Rizzo will die in that job, I didn't want a lateral move, and most importantly, with my contacts I was able to create a sports division at Jones Day which quadrupled my salary.

SC: you left to make more money?

Cromie: yes.

SC: you're my kinda guy!

Re: WHO??? (Discussing Adam Cromie)

Stearns' deal runs through 2022 with a possible club option for 2023, so if you want him, you may have to wait two years. Cohen is used to offering bazillions and getting whoever he wants. MLB doesn't work that way.

It's their best album, if I get a vote on such things. And it's fresh because the vast majority of it never got much in terms of radio play.

Yes, maybe, and absolutely yes.

And since their most recent album is called WHO, it's worth plugging on this thread in case the pandemic happened before it got a chance to be noticed. It kind of runs in descending order of quality, but the first couple of songs make it worth having.
