Noah Syndergaard's apparent contract with Anaheim not only brings to a close his Met tenure, but ends his term of service under the rights the Mets acquired for him when the dealt R.A. Dickey to the Blue Jays. This is the last such potato from the blockbuster trade to finish his term of service, making it as good a time as any to review the trade.
fWAR isn't everything. It's not the bottom line, but it tries hard to be. There are certain things it measures and certain things it does not, but treating it like a bottom line here, it's hard to argue that the trade was anything but a windfall for the Mets, judging by fWAR or fWAR/$$.
I don't recall if the trade only was complete after R.A. Dickey agreed to a two-year extension, but I'm considering those two years plus the option year as part of Toronto's acquisition. It doesn't make much of a difference. R.A. Dickey did a great job holding down a spot for the Blue Jays, but his All Star form was gone. It can certainly be argued that none of the four acquisitions for the Mets was particularly close to a best-case outcome, but it nonetheless comes off as a Mets win coming and going.
