The Ice Landers get a consensus No. 4 rank as NHL observers reveal pre-season power rankings. New arena still in progress means the Isles start the year on a 17-game road trip. They lost Eberle to Seattle in the draft, and traded away the fast-skating defenseman Nick Leddy to meet salary cap restrictions; re-signed Kyle Palmieri, Beauvillier, Casey Cizekas + added forward Zach Parise (son of former Islander JP) and D Zdeno Chara who at age 44 is the oldest NHLer and at 6-foot-8, the tallest guy to ever skate. Rangers got a few votes in the 14-16 range. They have a young, fast and foreign team that needs to play dirtier to make the playoffs, most people say. New coach Gerard Gallant formerly led the Vegas and Florida teams to overachieve. Devils are gonna suck, I think.

I'm gonna try to be a more present islanders fan this year. Also going to try to get to the new place, given that it's..2? miles from where I grew up, and my parents still live, but still some work in progress in leaving the kids with them.

I'm going to try to get out once or twice at least--otherwise, DVRing. Opening night is Thursday at Carolina; home opener around Thanksgiving.

It's been a long while since I attempted to watch hockey on TV. Cameraman chases puck is more like it. I'm told (by Ceetar) that production values are way better now. I do have a bigger screen; perhaps that will help. I feel like at some point in my life I was a NY Rangers fan. Inasmuch as I cared that is

I'm a casual Rangers fan. I DVR the games to avoid commercials and intermissions. I rarely can watch a whole hockey game live by myself. I have nif's that are total puck heads and I find when I watch with a group I find it much more enjoyable.

Funny when I googled yesterday morning Brass Monkey came up but I didn't click on it because it didn't look like a match. This thread also came up which kinda impressed me because it was only like two hours old. Good on Google.

I obviously don't follow the non-tri-state-area hockey news much. Seattle was

awarded an expansion franchise in 2018 and this is their inaugural season.

Isles complete 13 game road trip at 5-6-2 and in last place. They are slow and low-scoring. Lines need adjusting goaltending has been pretty good but nothing special 😢

Isles are all messed up... injuries, covid absences, and losing a lot. It's basically over for them unless something miraculous happens

All over but the shouting for the Islanders who have been too unlucky, not healthy enough, not fast enough or consistent enough to grind down the good teams like they used to the last two years. Two of their recent losses came against Colorado which is a FUN team to watch -- great skaters, daring defenders, take a million shots a game. Watch them if you can

When the Islanders were on their four-straight Stanley Cup winning run (1980 - 83) the cup winning games all came in mid-May. This year, the regular season won't end until May 1st meaning we could be talking about hockey games in July given how long the multiple rounds take. You know it's a problem when the NBA looks at your season and says, 'Damn you guys really stretch things out over there'

Rangers pulled their goalie down by one with more than two minutes left and a one goal deficit in a first round series tied 1-1. Seemed a bit rash to me. Penguins scored twice with the empty net to win 7-4

Lou Lamoreillo fires coaches. It's his go-to move. IIRC, he once fired a coach during the playoffs. oe: Thinking further, I don't believe it was during the playoffs but rather he changed the HC with just days left in the regular season despite having a highly ranked playoff bound team. And I think the NJD went on to win the Cup that year. In hockey coaches seem to get moved quicker than other sports based on the notion that winning appears to be more dependent on a kind of indefinable secret sauce that maybe a change mid-stream can suddenly conjure up.

I guess. The Islanders tho were the worst defensive team in the league and became basically the best in his first season and with the same guys! Made conference finals 2x without a single bona-fide superstar. And hardly any of the bad things that happened this year had much to do with Trotz, other than maybe a little too much Josh Bailey

You know, I don't follow hockey all that closely, but I always sort of knew his name because he'd been a coach for a long time, and I always assumed "Trotz" was a nickname, and his name was actually Trotzenstein or Trotzigliano or something. Go figure.

It's only the first round, which means there are like five months of NHL playoffs still to go, but this weekend will feature five Game-Sevens, three today then two more on Sunday. If nothing else this should make the league's new TV partners, ESPN & Turner, happy in this first year of their deal.
