Walt Frazier, for anyone who needs to google him.

Is there a reason we need a Walt Frazier thread? Is he dying?

Re: 'bounding and Astounding - The Clyde Frazier Thread

The national press never seemed to realize it, but I always thought Clyde was the bigger NYC sports hero of that era than Namath.

Joe Willie was a hit with the younger, more rebellious crowd among the ink-stained crew which, in the sixties, was a big deal. But Frazier had a much wider appeal IMO; older folks who liked a lot more fundies (as Keith would say) in their game liked Clyde, but so did the the younger crowd who wanted to see some more flair. Black kids liked him but so did white kids. Guys liked him, girls LOVED him.

And what became known as the Willis Reed game should really be known as the Walt Frazier game.

Re: 'bounding and Astounding - The Clyde Frazier Thread

I wasn't old enough or into b-ball enough to distinguish him. I knew who he was. I guess I knew all the Knicks starters and a reserve or two, but I didn't see or comprehend enough basketball that I could tell you who was better than whom or who was my favorite.

But his was the first athlete's name on a shoe that kids asked for by name. Some kids had Converse. Some had Adidas. But if you had Pumas, you didn't have shit unless you had Puma Clydes.

That they are still manufactured today is pretty stunning. I got the next-most-asked-for shoe — Adidas Superstars. I don't even think they were particularly good (mine came apart between the toe and the side panels). Clydes had the authority in the marketplace (I'm sure we all assumed they were the shoe to ask for because of the older kids) and that sure spoke to the man's authority.

Makin' news and sellin' shoes.

I went through a pair or three of blue-suede-with-white-stripe Clydes in middle school.

As I'm sure I've said many times (because I often repeat myself) I wanted to be either

Walt or Tom when I was a kid. Known for his very quick hands and 'defensive prowess'

as well as everything else he was a Top 50 All-Time NBA player a decade or two ago.

That list was from 25 years ago when the NBA was turning 50. They recently made their top 75 list to celebrate their 75th anniversary and Clyde made the cut this time too (as did DeBusschere and Reed)

Knicks also repped by Earl the Pearl, McAdoo, and Ewing.

I'm surprised there is still a special historical NBA spot reserved for Pete Maravich. He had a pretty good NBA career, but he put up a million shots to do it, and his legend always seemed to rest primarily on his amateur exploits. Without checking, I'd probably take Mark Agguire's or Bernard King's career over his.

I remember there was controversy over including Shaq on the 50th anniversary list but I suspect there is none of that now.

Yeah because he had only been in the league some four or five seasons at that point.

I remember Francesa talking to hoops writer Pete Vescey (I think it was Vescey) when that 50th list came out arguing that it you're going to vote for Shaq based more on his assumed future

than on his short track record to date then you'd have to also vote for Penny Hardaway (Shaq's point guard teammate also with a top flight start to his career) and Vescey replied, "I did".

Hardaway ultimately didn't garner enough votes to get onto to that team but, unlike the Shaq vote, any votes Penny did get turn out to look not so prescient in hindsight.

I don't follow basketball closely enough to have an opinion on most of this stuff but, in general, I'd be very leery of putting someone on a 'best ever' list based on maybe 1/4 of his eventual career.

Don Mattingly and Dale Murphy were sure fire HoF'ers ... and then came the second halves of their careers.

Since we're veering off course, Bob McAdoo kinda makes me raise

an eyebrow but I didn't go checking yet. Pistol Pete, Bernard King are

probably in the 'eh' territory' for me but I'm sure if someone cares they

will explain the Maravich thing. Was he in the 50th anniversary top 50?

Re: 'bounding and Astounding - The Clyde Frazier Thread

Glad to see some of the old timers make it, like Arazin (credited with inventing the jump shot), and George Mikan and Dolph Schayes.

I would have liked to have seen more ex-ABA players, like David Thompson and Mel Daniels who in their primes were as good as some of the players on the list. For example, Daniels, a 6'8" (undersized) center averaged 18.4 pts and 14.9 Rebounds and Wes Unseld )another undersized (6'7") center averaged 10 pts and 14 rebounds.

Thompson's career was cut short because a drug addiction he acquired while rehabbing from a foot injury - what we call opioid abuse these days. He averaged 22 pts over a nine year career. But his nickname , Skywalker, was an indication of his jumping ability and the excitement he brought to the arena. I'm not sure who he would have bumped off that list, but if you saw him play, you know he should be on it.

Yes. The only non-living player at the time to be included.

And the reason there aren't more ABA players is that it's the NBA all-time list, not a list of all basketball.

Joe Tait, the now retired, Hall of Fame broadcaster for the Cavaliers remembers when Frazier was traded by the Knicks to Cleveland. “One morning we're at the gate at Hopkins Airport, getting ready to fly somewhere, when Frazier strolls down the concourse in his Clyde hat and colorful, full length mink coat. Footsie Walker turns to me and says, ‘There goes the team dress code.'”

Dwight Howard belongs on that list. And it's good to see Rick Barry on the list - he's often overlooked on all-time lists because he'd split his career between the ABA and NBA.

His underhand free throw shot was a little after when I played, but I had practiced shooting that style, emulating other players who preceeded Barry. IIRC, Hawks player Cliff Hagan was one of them (Or was it Bob Petit?)

Another Rick Barry note:

When I worked at Prentice-Hall (the publishing company that made their mark with textbooks and biographies) they issued "Confessions of a Basketball Gypsy" the story of Rick Barry. During the first printing he moved to the Nets. So they had to recall the book cover with him wearing his old uniform (Oakland Oaks?) and replace it with one in his new uniform - the Nets.

Those 1972-1974 Knicks had six future NBA Hall-of-Famers on the roster at the same time: Willis Reed, Walt Frazier, Dave DeBusschere, Bill Bradley, Earl Monroe and Jerry Lucas. And that's not even close to the NBA record.
