40 man roster - Rule 5 draft

I just saw that the Mets added 4 players to their 40 man roster in order to protect them from the Rule 5 draft. I have no problem with that, but either there is something to the rule that I don't fully understand or I have some issues with some of the players they chose to protect. The 4 players they added in order to protect them from Rule 5 (according to MLB site) SS Ronnie Mauricio - Sure, you have to protect one of our best prospects 3B Mark Vientos - Okay, he is also considered one of our best farm hands RHP Jose Butto - Not familiar with him, but he is only 23 and has pretty decent numbers RHP Adam Oller - ? - Decent numbers, but nothing that jumps out at me aside from his Ks/9 My question is, why are C Francisco Alvarez, 3B Brett Baty, RHP Brett Allen & RHP J.T. Ginn not protected? They are generally considered (along with Mauricio and Vientos) our top minor league talents. The only reason I can come up with (other than you obviously can't protect everyone) is that they may be considered too young and considered to need more minor league time before they could be MLB ready. So the Mets brass don't believe teams would draft them, since they would need to place them on their MLB rosters in order to keep them. Is my thinking correct? Or is there another aspect to the Rule 5 draft that I don't know or understand?

I don't think those guys have been in the system long enough to be eligible for the Rule 5 draft. Soon, though.

Eligibility for the Rule V draft is based on a combination of age at which the player signed and how many years they have spent in the minors since they signed. If the player exceeds those limits, they must be added to the 40 man roster or risk being lost in the Rule V Draft. Later

Also (from SNY): In addition, RHP Dedniel Nunez was returned to the Mets and added to the Triple-A Syracuse roster. Nunez, 25, was selected by the San Francisco Giants in last year's Rule 5 Draft, but he underwent Tommy John Surgery in March and missed the entire season, allowing him to return to the Mets. He will not count against the 40 man roster. Later

You cannot be exposed to the Rule V draft unless (a) you signed after 18 years old and this is the fourth Rule V draft to occur since then, or (b) you signed at 18 or younger and this is the fifth Rule V draft to occur since then. Essentially, a team gets either 4.5-5 years to control a player without adding him to the roster if he has hit 19 before being signed, or 5.5-6 years to control him without adding him to the roster if he hasn't. Foreign-born players mostly get signed younger than domestic-born players, and so represent a disproportionate share of the guys who are protected, exposed, and ultimately taken in the draft. Three of those four players were signed before turning 19. Oller is the exception. He's an older player who may or may not have turned a corner.

Thank you all for the explanation regarding the age of signing and time since signing. I expected there was something in the rule that I did not fully understand. I appreciate your enlightening me. Now I understand why they chose to protect Oller instead of Alvarez of Baty.

I definitely missed an opportunity. However, I now have a better understanding of the how the Rule 5 Draft works.

So, according to Edgy's projected 2022 roster there are now 3 open spots. Has anyone read whether the Mets are looking to fill any of those spots in the Rule V draft? Later

The impression I got is that they want to sign some free agents.
