In the Yamamoto/Lucchesi role we could do a lot worse. For Matz I'm sure it'll come down something like that vs. an every-five-days struggle for a dreadful club like the Orioles.

Someone will absolutely give him a "guaranteed" rotation spot. He's proven to be worth it. And before we get too ahead of ourselves, our rotation currently consists of Taijuan Walker, who couldn't get anyone out once they took away sticky stuff; Tylor Megill, who turned back in to a pumpkin in August; Carlos Carrasco, who pitched to a 6.04 ERA; and deGrom and Peterson, both of whom are coming off injuries. So yeah, I'd pencil Matz in at no worse than #3 right now and see what happens.

Had a nice little year in Toronto, but I don't want him back, especially if it's an overpay. I simply don't trust him to keep it together if something goes wrong behind him. After winning 14 games he won't be looking for 5th starter money and he won't be giving the Mets any hometown discount. Pass.

I'd take Matz back in a heartbeat. We'd still need to sign a couple more starters. But he showed that we all thought he was capable and would likely be playing with much better defense behind him, assuming they sign Baez. This would be a low-risk, high-reward signing.

Hiring a new Manager and coaching staff soon might be a good idea. What we've learned. 1. Steve Cohen is actively involved in free agent discussions. Something he said he wouldn't do, and one of the biggest issues with the Wilpon regime. 2. Steve got played by Matz's agent. Whose job it is to drive up price, and say whatever it takes. 3. Steve's not used to getting played, doesn't like it, and now cries on Twitter about it, making this a bigger story than it ever needed to be. 4. He was willing to go four years, $44M on Steven Matz. Which is in itself alarming. 5. Steve Cohen badly needs a publicist.

I'm not so sure on #4. That's what Heyman said, but telling a reporter after the fact that you'd have matched isn't the same thing as being willing to do it. Also he told Sherman that Matz contacted the Mets, not the other way around. I don't know how to read that as anything but "We didn't really want you but are pissed you didn't come here" Like wtf? Either that, that's a fineish number for Matz. they need backend help too, he's not old, and that's not really that much money.

Agreed about needing the communications professional. I'm not sure I understand the business model for the agent. He must have more clients than Matz, and pissing off the most wealthy owner in baseball won't help him get other players signed by the Mets. And, it won't help him if he tries to use the Mets to drive up the price again. And if I'm a player looking for an agent, why would I hire a guy who has a bad relationship with the guy who can write the biggest checks? I don't know how the news about signing with the Cardinals was communicated to the Mets. But if I was told I'd get a chance to top an offer and I'm learning about the guy signing elsewhere in the media, I'd be frustrated.

1. Don't panic over free agent moves made before Thanksgiving. 2. That being said, owners who don't know when to shut up are a concern. 3. Managers, coaching staffs, and publicists not in place a week before a likely major lockout are also a concern.

Could we live with that in the rotation? Sure. Wanna be locked into it for four years on a guy who turns 31 early in year one? ... Now maybe pitching to Yadi (though only for the first year) plus the 15 Gold Glovers that StL throws onto the field every night will make him look better more often than not. Or maybe he will take things up a notch in StL just like those guys I swear the Cards bring off of their grounds crew every year to fill a hole just where they need it.

Last year I got the impression that players viewed the Mets new regime under Cohen's ownership as a place to be, on a team with a bright future. I no longer believe that is the perception among many players and their agents. The organization appears to be in disarray at this point. Time will tell as this off season plays out, but I don't think it took too long for the Mets to lose their status as a place to be.
