They'd missed the playoffs in 1970 and '71, but finished with a winning record both years, and manager Gil Hodges in particular thought Fregosi, not Ryan, was the type of player who could help the Mets make an immediate postseason run. "You always hate to give up on an arm like Ryan's," Hodges said after the trade. "He could put things together overnight, but he hasn't done it for us and the Angels wanted him.
