Press release from Samsung.

The New York Mets announced Samsung Electronics America as the ballpark's official display and technology solutions partner, signing a multi-year deal to deliver a complete transformation of the famous ballpark's screens to create an interactive fan experience like never before. Samsung – a leader in Digital Signage innovation – will bring the Mets vision of creating a one-of-a-kind ballpark to life with its unique portfolio of displays, content management platform and services.

“Baseball is one of America's great historical pastimes and thanks to cutting-edge display- and data-driven innovation, we are ushering in a new, exciting era that transforms the ballpark experience and brings fans into the game like never before,” said Harry Patz Jr., Senior Vice President and General Manager, Display Division, Samsung Electronics America. “Technology is central to the way fans enjoy sports, and we are thrilled to bring Samsung's full display portfolio, solutions and expertise to this new era of fandom.”

From the moment they arrive on property to the final out, fans will experience gameday in a whole new way. Among the enhancements for 2022 that are expected include new ribbon boards and more than 1,300 LCD screens throughout the ballpark to lead fans to the shortest lines and ensure they don't miss a single pitch. A new larger and enhanced centerfield scoreboard will be installed for fans' enjoyment for the 2023 season at Citi Field.

“We are excited and proud to partner with such a world-wide leader and iconic brand as Samsung,” said Executive Vice President and Chief Revenue Officer Jeff Deline. “Like Samsung, the Mets have a very loyal and passionate fan base, and the implementation of this state-of-the-art technology is going to provide an enhanced experience and environment for millions of fans that come to Citi Field for many years.”

IMMERSIVE DISPLAY TECHNOLOGY & SOLUTIONS

As the complete design and build partner for the Citi Field project, Samsung will deploy the full breadth of its display portfolio and technology solutions throughout the ballpark to create the first connected venue in Major League Baseball.

“Samsung has a rich tradition of innovation and purpose-built technology. Over a two-year period, we'll transform a once static signage environment to an all-digital experience,” said Mark Quiroz, Vice President Product Marketing, Display Division, Samsung Electronics America. “By seamlessly weaving display technology and sensors into the existing environment, Samsung will create a gateway for connectivity at Citi Field for both the operators and the fans.”

“Our partnership with Samsung is a significant investment from our owner Steve Cohen to bring the most state-of-the-art technology to the ballpark and provide our fans an even better experience at Citi Field,” said Mets Chief Technology Officer Mark Brubaker. “The quality of these upgrades and integration into the daily experience for our fans make Citi Field an industry leader when it comes to the most innovative technological displays.”

WHAT FANS CAN EXPECT

Built for the future, the ballpark upgrade – one of the largest single projects in all professional sports – is slated to take place over the span of two years and will make Citi Field the most technologically advanced ballpark in the major leagues. When complete, Citi Field will feature:

More than 1,300 LCD screens and 4,000 square feet of direct view LED screens in public spaces, enhancing the fan experience at every touch point and even alerting them when their team merchandise is ready for pick up

A ballpark-wide IPTV system that will carry nearly 100 channels of sports and entertainment content

Double the number of slow-motion replay systems and three times as many cameras for increased game coverage

An enhanced and fully upgraded scoreboard to display the latest LED technology and handle 4K video

An iconic landmark and historic symbol of New York City, Citi Field will welcome fans to experience one of America's favorite pastimes like never before through Samsung innovations. The multi-year technology upgrade is scheduled to begin in 2022.

I think that one big scoreboard will be an improvement over that jumbled mishmosh that they have now.

But I don't think I would describe Citi Field as "an iconic landmark and historic symbol of New York City".

More Tacky or Less Tacky?

Both. Looks like the Mets will no longer have the ugliest scoreboard in all of baseball. No. Make that ugliest scoreboards. And also make that in all of sports.

But the new scoreboard doesn't fit the space, whose initial design wasn't made for the new and improved board, giving it sort of a jerry-rigged look.

I've no doubt that the old Citi Field scoreboard drove Steve Cohen nuts. God, were those two fucking things hideous. But that's what happens when an idiot tyrant gets to design a major league baseball stadium. I'm hoping that moneybags Cohen eventually tears down the whole fucking thing and starts over from scratch.

You're suggesting that they tear down "an iconic landmark and historic symbol of New York City"???

Re: New Citi Field Scoreboard: More Tacky or Less Tacky?

no cheesy ads? THERE ARE MORE CHEESEY ADS. They're gonna be sprinkled into everything. EVERYTHING. I hope we can get full screen stuff occasionally, but it's like 99% even that's gonna be wrapped in some sort of COORS LIGHT frame.

I'm just gonna focus on the extra slo-mo cameras and stuff. Hopefully the Mets can use this to properly steal signs and the like, and at the very least (I assume SNY will have access to them) we'll get some cool shots.

I'm glad our in-stadium ad-viewing experience will be crisper. I'm glad we'll be able to watch the NBA in the bathroom now or whatever. I'm glad we'll be able to be just ASSAULTED with sounds and video around every corner. There were times at Citi Field when I'd stare off at something and NOT see an ad, and that's just lost revenue for the Mets. No space should be free of advertising!

I'm surprised no one's wrapped the Blue and Orange staircases in ads yet, like they do with subway cars.

only 8 more years before it's Crypto-NFT park or whatever anyway.

1,300 eye catching displays?
A ballpark-wide IPTV system that will carry nearly 100 channels of sports and entertainment content

Is that to take our attention away from the product they're putting on the field?

Of course it should be better than the hegdish we've been subjected to, but what about the game we're there to see?

I don't like the objective, but am holding my judgement until I see how well it is executed.

Re: New Citi Field Scoreboard: More Tacky or Less Tacky?

One of the most highly anticipated things in my life was the brand-new gigantic modern scoreboard that was promised in late 1963 for sparkling new Shea Stadium. I remember the artist's conceptions of it, and thinking "How cool! I can see actual photographs on this newfangled thing!!" though I couldn't quite imagine how that would actually work.

Re: New Citi Field Scoreboard: More Tacky or Less Tacky?

It's about time for upgrades. Things like stores need to be redone about every 7 years.

The thing about the current scoreboards and the weird angles is they do double duty as billboards from the rear that don't do much for the outside aesthetics of the building. We can be certain this giant thing will accomplish that somehow too

Re: New Citi Field Scoreboard: More Tacky or Less Tacky?

This will be great, as long as they don't use unique numbers for the out-of-town pitchers which require you to buy the scorecard to decode (as was done at Shea for a while).

As a kid I remember Diamond Vision actually being touted as a major off-season improvement for the early 80s Mets. Not free agents, not trades, but a fucking scoreboard.

The 1982 Mets introduced a very highly touted trade acquisition, as well as a new skipper.

Re: New Citi Field Scoreboard: More Tacky or Less Tacky?

I actually liked the two distinct scoreboards. Shea's too. I found it easier to know where to look for what I was looking for, a more static lineup/stats in one spot, and the replays/live type stuff on the other spot.

Maybe they'll finally fix the out of town scoreboard error and be able to show the pitch speed, count, and type all at the same time? (hint hint SNY)

Re: New Citi Field Scoreboard: More Tacky or Less Tacky?

I used to think there was a good novel plot in a baseball owner -- let's call him Fred-- who signs a Japanese ballplayer to a 7 figure contract so as to get a break on the cost of a scoreboard from a club owner in the electronics field. Only, the player is horribly out of sorts in the USA, anxious to discover US nightlife, and unbeknownst to the club, owes a hefty debt to the Yakuza back in his home country.

It's up to the player's put-upon interpreter--a kid fresh out of college whose duties also include office busy work and tending to a ladyfriend who'd prefer to spend nights watching romantic sitcoms--to solve these multiple crisises. He engages the assistance of a small-city beat reporter, who baffles his experienced rivals with one clubhouse exclusive after another while slowly crafting an cover story for the athlete's real estate investments which may or may not pay off and keep the gangsters from throwing out the first pitch--in a deadly war.

Can our hero keep his lovelife alive, the owner in the dark and the team in the first division? Read on!
