I like the thinking here — a city that has become particularly large in the last generation or two. So while it may not have produced Mets in the past, future Mets are being born there now. But the flip side is that San Antonio is in Texas ... and Texas makes LOTS of ballplayers. And Jerry Grote, among others, was one of the ones made in San Antonio. The city we're looking at is smaller than San Antonio.

WE HAVE A WINNER! The rapidly growing capital of Ohio is now the 14th-largest city in America. A population of 913,921 is something to brag about, except nobody born there has ever played for the Mets. It's almost like there's a law that all Ohioan Mets must have launched from Zanesville. What Columbus can (and, I'm sure, does) brag about is former Mets coach and manager Frank Howard, born in Columbus, graduating South High School in Columbus, and going on to matriculate at Ohio State University in Columbus. Frank is about as Columbian as they come. Oddly, in our recent review of what history we really want to celebrate, the City of Columbus has taken down their statue of Christopher Columbus, and discontinued their Columbus Day celebrations, but still, oddly enough, persist in calling themselves Columbus, which is, you know, whatever. But maybe they can put up a statue of The Capital Punisher instead.
