#whamageddon

My brother introduced me to a holiday game, where you and friends see how long you can go without hearing Wham!'s “Last Christmas.” Cover versions are OK. You post the hashtag when you hear it the first time and are out.

I would not last long! I love Christmas music, though that one is way overplayed.

Yeah, one of the few damn songs you hear while shopping

Gee wouldn't it be nice to hear a ‘Christmas' song that mentions Christ?

One of the reasons I shop online so I can avoid the crap holiday stuff played in stores so we don't upset anyone.

Here's my thought…you don't like Jesus? Than don't celebrate his birth.

Kinda sick of the bullshit holiday songs I've been hearing the past few years. Depressing.

I hate Christmas anymore

Re: #whamageddon

It's fun because it's the same chord pattern throughout on the verse and refrain, but the melody's different. It's on a minor variation of the 50s progression, and folks can play it when they're drunk until their arms fall off, and you can just make up your own lyrics. Michael changes the melody from verse to verse, so you can too!

The dude died on Christmas day. Hearing the song a year later, I thought, "God damn, he really did give his heart last Christmas."

It's a pretty good album. The offending rewrite isn't there, but they do cover the Ramones, which is always a good thing. They cover a song from an SNL skit, too. The version of "Father Christmas" is really, really good! It sounds different than the rest of the album to me, so I wonder if it was recorded for something else and added here.

That's a funny story!

It's not great, but I wouldn't say it's the worst of the mainstream songs. Whamageddon makes a funnier name than Mariah Carey-ageddon.

Re: #whamageddon

I can name 100 worse Christmas songs than "LC" without trying.

In fact, it's strange that the author opens by mentioning he grew up listening to WASH-FM in Washington, because there is a Christmas song that they put in heavy rotation on that station every December — a song that I've heard absolutely nowhere else — called "Christmas Eve in Washington." It's paint-by-numbers awful, assuming that your paint palette includes "varying shades of excrement." How anyone who has ever heard it can call "LC" the worst is a mystery.

I assume the lyrics were written in 10 minutes, and before the evening was out, the principals had thrown together a "Christmas Eve in Charlotte" and a "Christmas Eve in Frankfort" with the exact same backing track.

I just dug it up and it's truly worse than I remember. I share it here for the sake of the academic ethical requirement to cite one's sources. I am totally not recommending you click.

Re: #whamageddon

I have an incredibly weird relationship with the "The Flame." I know The Trick had a massive hit with it, but if you asked me to sing it, I'd have no idea how it goes.

Then, later, sometime, I'll hear it and go, "I know this song ... what is it?" And then I find out later that it's "The Flame." I'll say, "Oh, THIS is 'The Flame.' I guess I won't forget it now."

And then I instantly forget.

The way CT tell it is that EPIC called them up and said, "We have two songs that are going to Number One. We'd like you to do one, and Chicago to do the other."

The other was "Look Away." Cheap Trick listened to the demo and didn't hear anything worthwhile at all, so pretty much committed to "The Flame" almost before hearing it. Both DID end up going to #1 despite both being objectively awful, but Cheap Trick still keeps "The Flame" in their setlist, often as an encore, so what do I know?

I've seen them twice and they've not played it either time.

For the record, also, CT is a terrible live act unless you go super deep with them. If you're mostly only familiar with their big three 70s hits (Surrender, IWYTWM, Dream Police) and their 80s pop-mush revival (The Flame, Don't Be Cruel), you're going to have to muddle through 45 minutes of songs you don't know at all just to get to anything that sounds familiar. And what's worse is Robin Zander still enveloping himself into his Dream Police "uniform," looking like ten pounds of shit stuffed into a five pound sausage casing.

Be forewarned.

From Pennsylvania folks are travelin'

Wouldn't let a December pass without it. It's a big favorite of my wife's, also.

When I was a young feller, some holiday meal blew up into pure family fighting chaos. As otherwise sensible adults stormed away from the table, the last three that remained were myself, my brother's date, and my (very mortified) brother.

Brother, absolutely at a loss to say anything, after 30 seconds, opted for pure denial, and went the small-talk route. "So, Edgy," he asked, "what's your favorite latter-day Christmas song?"

The instant answer in my head was "MC(IDWtFT)" by the Ramones, and, as blessed irony descended on me, rather than answer him out loud, I just fell out of my seat laughing.

Where is Blitzen, Baby?
