Although unmentioned in the linked ESPN piece, Reeves had been suffering from dementia in recent years. And while that's not unheard of for someone in their mid-70s, it's still semi-young. Reeves of course played prior to his coaching career which leads to wondering about CTE and as to whether the family will pursue an examination.

A Patch of Blue was a good film. A good book too.

It surprisingly was the most successful of Poitier's career. It was the most lucrative too, as he worked for scale plus 10% of gross earnings. It seems mostly forgotten and if I didn't know that factlet, and was asked which of his films did the best in theatres, I'd have probably named seven or eight titles before guessing that. Maybe more.

NYT on Guinier:

While the rest of the country remembered her for her failed nomination, she continued to make strides as a legal scholar and teacher. She pioneered research on implicit bias in the classroom and workplace. Later in her career she opened a wide-ranging critique of merit, especially the way it distorts institutions like her own.

Many of her positions have since moved into and informed the mainstream, especially her criticisms of voter redistricting processes.

“The ability to see so far down the line was her gift,” Heather Gerken, the dean of Yale Law School, said in a phone interview. “She had a deep understanding of the insidious ways that power corrupts institutions, even institutions acting in good faith.”

Yes, Guinier's torpedoing was a retribution move for Bork. Time was when, as long as the candidate was deemed to have the proper credentials for the post, the executive branch usually got

their candidate approved and often by large and bipartisan majorities. The 'Borking' process killed off that trend.

But that linked article also correctly points out how quickly and cowardly Clinton caved once opposition appeared. IIRC, he and Guinier were not just familiar with each other's stances but were

friends to the point where he and Hillary had attended her wedding. All of which made his claim, once the flak started, that he wasn't aware of many of the legal views she espoused sound like

the total bullshit they were. Even I knew at the time that he was full of it on this topic because I knew what her views were in advance of her nomination and I certainly make no claim, then or

now, to being the most informed consumer of political news, particularly when compared to the then 44-ish y/o President who by that point had already been in politics for about 40 of those years.

My "inside source" at the time was my subscription to Newsweek magazine. If only Bill C. had had one of those he could have avoided the entire embarrassment.

Bob Saget, 65.

https://www.tmz.com/2022/01/09/bob-saget-dead-dies-hotel-comedian-full-house/

Saget played my college campus at Springfest time. He did an imitation of Jerry Lewis singing "Beat It" while aping Michael Jackson's steps. And when I say "Jerry Lewis," I mean "Jerry Lewis' idiot boy character." It was horrifying, but my well-lit classmates were just eating it up. Rolling in the aisles.

Saget was killing it. My roommate was more lit than most, but he looked at me and he was just as horrified as I was. He somehow found the right soft spot in between the dying laughter and Saget's next bit to make a bullhorn out of his hands and yell, "YOU SUCK!!"

Somehow that just did it. Fully half the room was instantly sobered up and snapped out of the spell. Saget finished his set more or less successfully, but never had them eating out of his hand again.

It wasn't kind, and by most accounts, Saget wasn't a bad dude. Sean wasn't a dick — at least he wasn't that kind of dick — and he kind of felt bad. But when I'd ask about it, he'd say, "Jerry Lewis doing 'Beat It' — maybe I shouldn't have done that, but Goddaminit, somebody had to do something."

Rock on, Bob Saget. I imagine you'll get the last laugh yet.

I think of him as the third member of the Trottier-Bossy line during the Stanley Cup run, but I think he only started the run with those two. Somewhere along the way, Bob Bourne got bumped to the first line and Gilles fell to the all-G-Men second line of Gilles-Goring-Gilbert.

All six were Canadians in those pre-Russian invasion days, but I think Trottier identified as Native American and played for the U.S. in the Canada Cup.

Re: Guess who died in 2022

I don't remember the term "Power Forward" being used at the time (as it was in that link) but it's a good description for Gilles and players like him from back in the day when your team's

tough guy/fighter (although there was rarely just one) didn't mean just a barely-talented goon. You don't score 30+ goals/year, as Gilles did in his prime seasons, if your only job is to

protect Bossy. Trottier/Bossy/Gilles was a helluva first line for a number of years. And while each clearly had individual strengths, their roles weren't as strictly defined as they would have

been in later years when expansion more or less doubled the size of the league since their day.

IIRC, both he and Bobby Bourne had shots at baseball careers but pursued hockey instead.

From the colorfully named town of Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan, Gilles had a standard answer when asked where Moose Jaw was: 'About six feet in front of its ass'

Not surprising also that Clark was a real good golfer, doing well in the mini 'Celebrity Tour' that existed for a time. That tour was informally known as the Rick Rhoden tour for a while

as the one-time Pittsburgh pitcher dominated the ex- (and sometimes current) jocks and actors who made up the rest of the field.

The main event on that tour was (and is) at Lake Tahoe which has aired on NBC for years. So I'm watching one year and it's Rhoden and former NBA'er Bill Lambeer in the final pairing

down the stretch so much of the TV coverage is on them. Michael Jordan, at least 20 strokes back, got every one of his shots on TV as well (NBC then held the NBA rights). Lawrence

Taylor, probably only recently retired, got the next most TV time even though he was at least a dozen shots in back of Jordan. And then there was Gilles, in 3rd place and in the pairing

right behind Rhoden & Lambeer. But he was a hockey player, and an ex-one at that, so was of no interest to the network. He was shown maybe twice the whole day despite being just

off the lead.

One of the funniest comedians I've ever seen. His act was purportedly his doing magic, but he rarely got a trick completed. He used everything -- prop comedy, violence, silly one-liners -- and kept it up nonstop. You never knew what might happen next.

Legendary political reporter Walter Mears, 87.

Mears' ability to find the essence of a story while it was still going on and to get it to the wire — and to newspapers and broadcasters around the world — became legend among peers. In 1972, Timothy Crouse featured Mears in “The Boys on the Bus,” a book chronicling the efforts and antics of reporters covering that year's presidential campaign.

Crouse recounted how, immediately after a political debate, a reporter from The Boston Globe called out to the man from AP: “Walter, what's our lead? What's the lead, Walter?” The question became a catchphrase among political reporters to describe the search for the most newsworthy aspect of an event — the lead. “Made me moderately famous,” Mears cracked in 2005.

It was a natural question. Mears had to bang out stories about campaign debates while they were still underway. Newspaper editors would see his lead on the wire before their own reporters filed their stories. So it was defensive for others on the press bus to wonder what Mears was leading with, and to ask him.

Re: Guess who died in 2022

Hurt was my favorite celebrity interview. He'd be on a junket promoting The Legend of Sasquatch or Lost in Space or something, and insist that the interviewer take his craft seriously and address him like he'd just painted the Sistine Chapel ceiling. He'd get the de rigueur question of "What's it like working with Edward Norton (or whoever)?" and he'd invariably answer with the likes of, "Well ... it is work. And it's hard bloody work at that."

The reviewer would suddenly realize this goof was going to give his boring stupid assignment a great angle, and come back with. "That's terrific ... so what's it like working with Ed Norton?" and Hurt would prattle on crankily about the grave responsibility of the artist and the profound questions they ask and the legacies they leave behind and the writer would be all excited to call his editor to ask for 1,000 more words.

Former Secretary of State Madeleine Albright, 84.

Madeleine K. Albright, a child of Czech refugees who fled from Nazi invaders and Communist oppressors and then landed in the United States, where she flourished as a diplomat and the first woman to serve as secretary of state, died on Wednesday in Washington. She was 84.

The cause was cancer, her daughter Anne said.

Enveloped by a veil of family secrets hidden from her for most of her life, Ms. Albright rose to power and fame as a brilliant analyst of world affairs and a White House counselor on national security. Under President Bill Clinton, she became the country's representative to the United Nations (1993-97) and secretary of state (1997-2001), making her the highest-ranking woman in the history of American government at the time.

I always recall being at a show in Carolines, where they seat you on these really narrow tables opposite other people. Gilbert is on fire this night, starting off with his bit where he turns thanking the audience for coming into a diatribe where he'd desperately like to kill and dismember all of us, getting more and more gruesome and yet funnier with every word; it's like 45 seconds into the show, I'm laughing so hard I can't breathe, and I look across the table to this Wall Street douche with a blank look on his face who just doesn't get it. Years later I was at the show that was recorded for the Aristocrats movie.

He married the girl at the snack bar, and he somehow arrived in the NHL speaking no English. He was so culturally at sea his rookie year, Trottier invited him to move in.

His fifty goals nine years in a row is still an unmatched feat.

Re: Guess who died in 2022

Some of the francophones in Quebec resented Bossy for learning English (and essentially speaking it accent-free) and would often pronounce his name over the PA as Michelle despite him using the anglophonic Mike/Michael.

Shades of 'Bob' Clemente.

btw, his father was Ukrainian.

While his skinny frame was often being knocked around, Bossy somehow always righted himself and found the net when the puck came his way. When asked how he knew where the net was in all that tumult his simple answer was; 'It never moves'.

Isles are in Montreal tonight, Bossy's team vs his home town team.

Bad week for high-scoring right wings from Quebec.

Both he and Bossy of lung cancer.

Hockey, seemingly more than other sports, has often had a consensus best player/face of the sport and, in the pre-Gretzsky era, that face was Lafleur. I remember a magazine ad for Koho, at the time the biggest name in sticks. It was an action shot of Lafleur skating, instantly recognizable in the iconic Montreal uni and his blond hair flowing in those pre-helmet days. With the Koho trademark clearly visible, the caption on the ad was simply: Need We Say More?

Following a retirement due to a dispute with Montreal mgmt, he returned (to the Rangers) several years later making him an active player who was already in the Hockey HOF, still helmetless (via the grandfather rule) though by then the hair was less blond and there was less of it.

For icon status, particularly in Quebec but all over Canada really, Mickey Mantle might be a good comparison.

Good analogy. I guess that makes Gordie Howe Babe Ruth.

Kids wanted to be Mantle when they grew up, but they knew there could never be another Babe Ruth.

This has nothing to do with whether Howe was better than Lafleur or not; they overlapped somewhat but their primes were separate.

This is more about how both Mantle & Lafleur were national faces of the sport on account of being the best player on their sports' most storied franchise during a dynastic run for each and at a time each sport was unquestionably the national game with the majority of players homegrown.

There's a passage from Ken Dryden's memoir THE GAME* where he talks about getting dressed in the locker room prior to a practice but already hearing skates against the ice and pucks

against the boards. And he doesn't have to look. He knows. It's Lafleur. Skating by himself with a bucketful of pucks before anyone else has joined him; he's out there skating around

imaginary defensemen and banging pucks off the boards at various locations and angles just to see how they'll come off; he's honing and refining skills the same way he learned them

in the first place, not by rote or by structured drills but by feel and imagination and invention. "Inventing the game", a rough translation of an Indian expression from (I believe) lacrosse,

is used by Dryden to explain how skills are learned and miraculous plays are made because they had previously been imagined and tried. So when one sees a "miracle" play by

Pele or Magic, Gretzky or Tiger, or a small handful of other so-called geniuses of sport, its genesis likely goes beyond what's god-given or coached, it was likely created years before by

a kid, or even by an adult, who never stopped imagining what most others never considered.

One of my close friends growing up, Brendan, died Sunday after a fast onset of pancreatic cancer.

Brendan was a very funny guy from a big family of crazy Irish brothers, but his humor was very peculiar and elaborate, extremely funny to those who got it and mysterious if you didn't. A huge Mets fan. I've talked about how my friends back in the 80s referred to the Mets as the "Brothers"-- that was Brendan and his crew.

I'd known Brendan lived in the city for many years but I hadn't seen him since I hitchhiked to Albany to visit him during college. We'd only just reconnected on facebook and turned out we lived in the same neighborhood but never got together as he was chemo-sick. Brendan also worked in WTC on 9/11 and lost a lot of co-workers. He was one of the people who read off names of the dead in the event every year.

Liotta was not known widely prior to GOODFELLOWS. But Scorcese tells a story about Liotta walking into the room for auditions or initial meetings or whatever and noticing his security people all tensing up and moving towards him as he entered. Scorcese reasoned that if his security team all sensed the possibility of menace in the actor then the audience would do the same even though Henry Hill is seen committing very little violence in the film itself. But it was the projection that he might which led the director to insist on Liotta's casting even as the suits were pushing for, I think it was, Tom Cruise and Madonna for the parts that eventually went to Liotta and Lorraine Bracco.

Re: Guess who died in 2022

My brother-in-law was (still is) a sophisticated man of sophisticated tastes. Wine, music, society — the man shopped from the top shelf. But he had a bizarre love for the dumbest action movies. He preferred the films that couldn't afford Stallone and Schwarzeneggar — not just the B teamers of Dolph Lundgren and Steven Seagall, but shit that wished they had Stallone or Ahnold, but couldn't get the money together. The night his first child was born, he went to see Time Cop.

My brother, at the time, wanted to be like my brother-in-law, and do the things BiL did. Brother spent a nice stretch of a few months seeing every piece-of-shit muscle action flick that Hollywood could roll out, just at the time when they were rolling out one every three or four weeks. One day, on his way out of the theater after seeing Double Impact or Harley Davidson and Marlboro Man or some shit like that, a suit tapped him on the shoulder and asked if he had seen any of a number of films in the past year. All of them being sweaty muscle action fare, he answered that he had seen 'em all. "Well terrific," the suit answered, "we'd like you to be part of the test audience for our new feature, No Escape."

He got two passes and invited me along, and holy shit! Some producer was trying to turn Ray Liotta into an action star! This was exciting, high concept, and ... not a good movie. Ray projects menace and toughness and malice and shit, but he isn't particularly big, and facing off against big baddies, it showed. The idea is that he's a prisoner with an escape-y background on an inescapable island, where the hopeless denizens have divided into two groups — one living by jungle law and even cannibalism (IIRC), and the other trying to build a mutually beneficial society. Ray just wanted to escape, but there was NO ESCAPE.

The sort of socio-moral duality of the two groups made it kind of heady for a stupid film, and hey, it had Lance Henriksen, who is always just the right amount of creepy, but it was never going fly, and it was my job to tell them so.

Never having previously been given such a chance to speak truth to power, I wrote on my feedback card like a maniac throughout the film. Twenty minutes after curtain, I was still giving feedback. Feedback, feedback, feedback. They sort of had to kick me out and wrestle my card away.

I felt bad. If my feedback alone didn't sink this film, clearly other test audiences were in agreement (though presumably with more brevity). It took two more years for the film to come out, in limited release, with changes in the editing and music. I can't imagine it lasted much longer than two weeks. Maybe it went straight to video even, I'm not sure. Ray never did become an action star, and his next feature lead was a romantic comedy with Whoopie Goldberg, so I felt kind of responsible. And I kind of felt like the film was mine in a way. I looked for it in video stores, asked friends if they had ever heard of it. As time passed, I wondered if my brother and I had dreamed it up. Ernie Hudson as the evil warden? That didn't really happen, did it?

But happen it did. There was just too much sadistic freak behind those eyes for Ray to be a hero. My favorite film he's featured in was Something Wild, where he's a totally unhinged (but kind of swinging) antagonist to Jeff Daniels. Go see that shit.

If you listened to Casey Kasem back in the day, and continue to listen to his 1970s replays, you know that his staff couldn't play a Seals & Crofts hit without Casey relaying crucial S&C knowledge. If they were on the charts, Casey had an essay cued up. Among the anecdotes I recall:

1. Jim and Darrell were members of The Champs, famous for their instrumental smash "Tequila!" They weren't on that release, and The Champs weren't really a band, but a bunch of studio musicians throwing together a B-side for somebody else's record, but the DJ's turned it over and loved the flip side, so S&C were among the musicians hastily recruited to go on tour when the record climbed the charts.

2. They later, with a lot of the same guys, joined Glen Campbell's backing band, the GC's, but when they got off the road, Glen used his old buddies in The Wrecking Crew to cut the records. So their ongoing theme became, "We were the touring guys, not the recording guys," and so they set off to make their own mark as a duo.

3. Both became practicers of and advocates for the Baha'i faith, a persecuted religion based primarily in the Persian region, which holds that God's revelations can be found in all the great world religions. The Baháʼí House of Worship in Wilmette, Illinois is one of the masterpieces of architect/sculptor of sacred spaces John Joseph Earley. After getting dumped by Warner Brothers, S&C's recording career was shot, but they were always a big draw for Baha'i gatherings.

4. The recently departed Jim Seals was the brother of Dan Seals of England Dan and John Ford Coley, meaning that, AMAZINGLY, one half of 2/3 of the Holy Trinity Acts of Mid-Seventies Soft Rock Duos came from the same womb.

During the scene where Bookman is giving Jerry a verbal barrage, Jerry (the actor) is clearly on the verge of cracking up at several points. Hall, on the other hand, never breaks character nor misses a beat the whole time.

I just saw Hall starring in "Hard Eight" on cable just two or three days ago. Never saw this movie before. It was the movie Paul Thomas Anderson directed just a year after and immediately following his breakout hit - "Boogie Nights". Many of the "Boogie" actors also appeared in "Hard Eight", including John C. Reilly, who I''m beginning to notice, is like in every single movie I might be interested in watching. What does he -- make like a feature movie every other month?

Anyways, Hall was a really solid character actor.

Joel Whitburn, who knew Billboard better than anyone ever, 82.

After founding the Record Research Inc. company in 1970, Whitburn became one of the leading authors of reference books on the Billboard charts, releasing over 100 total entries of series like Top Pop Singles, Top 40 Hits, Top 40 Albums and Top 40 Country Hits. Particularly in the time before the internet made archival chart information widely available, his books proved invaluable in providing the whole industry with reliable chart stats and records, becoming fixtures on the bookshelves for DJs, execs, writers and artists alike. (His accurate reporting also made it more difficult for publicists and labels to credibly fudge the chart achievements of their artists, a notoriously common practice in the early '70s.)

Or, as the dubbed for TV version had it, "with just a stick in his hand".

Moving that movie to TV caused a minor kerfuffle at the time as the movie rating code was only a few years old then [1966 I believe, whereas the movie came

out in '72] so the idea that an 'R' rated movie would become an almost instant classic was new. So what to do? Unlike GOODFELLOWS 20-some years later,

THE GODFATHER had very little language issues to deal with (but apparently "dick" was deemed enough of one), so the debate was about cutting the sex

(wedding scene) or the violence (tame-ish by today's standards but more novel then). And then there was the whole Italian thing. Italian-American groups

raised enough of a protest, arguing that putting it on TV would roil up anti-Italian sentiment*, that the network (ABC I think) ran a lawyerly-worded disclaimer

at the beginning claiming no disrespect to anyone while going out of their way to not mention who might possibly be offended by its running. Sort of reminiscent

of when Jeremy Giambi apologized during his steroids controversy while never actually saying what he was apologizing for, just that he was sorry for ... something.

So "his dick" got changed into "a stick", the Sonny & bridesmaid scene was shortened (just the panting at the end IIRC), and ABC asked some non-specific

group of people who had made great contributions to the United States not to stay mad at them for running the recent Oscar winner.

And within a few years cable TV had taken over so this sort of controversy wound up existing only in that narrow window of time.

* Mario Cuomo famously refused to even watch the movie (at theaters or on TV) for many years, finally relenting decades later and declaring it "maybe a classic".

Wow, that certainly gets headlines above the passing of Roger E. Mosely, T.C. to Tom Selleck's Magnum, P.I., forever bailing out his buddy while forced to drop hints that time and helicopter fuel aren't free.

Mosely, who sadly died from injuries sustained in a car crash earlier in the week, was a regular on TV for a decade or more before landing the role of T.C., but spent his latter years as a track and field coach.

Speaking of TV, the HBO adaptation of McCullough's John Adams bio shouldn't have had his name on it. They took a gross amount of liberty with the story as recorded by McCullough.

I'd be hard-pressed to come up with who else might be in the running. Certainly, many great songs have been written by teams of three, but not too many teams of three maintain a decades-long mostly exclusive partnership with one another. I guess Barry, Robin, and Maurice Gibb who were often credited all together at various points in their career, but at other times, no.

A lot of Ellie Greenwich and Jeff Barry songs are credited as Greenwich/Barry/Spector, but that was probably Spector playing the heavy as often as not, and it wasn't an ongoing thing.

    It was a casual meeting.

Over salmon and field greens, Barbara Ehrenreich was discussing future articles with her editor at Harper's Magazine. Then, as she recalled, the conversation drifted.

How could anyone survive on minimum wage? She mused. A tenacious journalist should find out.

Her editor, Lewis Lapham, offered a half smile and a single word reply: “You.”

The result was the book “Nickel and Dimed: On (Not) Getting By in America” (2001), an undercover account of the indignities, miseries and toil of being a low-wage worker in the United States. It became a best seller and a classic in social justice literature.

Ms. Ehrenreich, the journalist, activist and author, died at 81 on Thursday at a hospice facility in Alexandria, Va., where she also had a home. Her daughter, Rosa Brooks, said the cause was a stroke.

Working as a waitress near Key West, Fla., in her reporting for “Nickel and Dimed,” Ms. Ehrenreich quickly found that it took two jobs to make ends meet. After repeating her journalistic experiment in other places as a hotel housekeeper, cleaning lady, nursing home aide and Wal-Mart associate, she still found it nearly impossible to subsist on an average of $7 an hour.

Every job takes skill and intelligence, she concluded, and should be paid accordingly.

One of more than 20 books written by Ms. Ehrenreich, “Nickel and Dimed” bolstered the movement for higher wages just as the consequences of the dot-com bubble snaked through the economy in 2001.

“Many people praised me for my bravery for having done this — to which I could only say: Millions of people do this kind of work every day for their entire lives — haven't you noticed them?” she said in 2018 in an acceptance speech after receiving the Erasmus Prize, given to a person or institution that has made an exceptional contribution to the humanities, the social sciences or the arts.

Ms. Ehrenreich noticed those millions throughout a writing career in which she tackled a variety of themes: the myth of the American dream, the labor market, health care, poverty and women's rights. Her motivation came from a desire to shed light on ordinary people as well as the “overlooked and the forgotten,” her editor, Sara Bershtel, said in an email.

In one of my old jobs, I had opportunities to interview many people, including many of some note who came to town for speaking engagements. Some were exactly like what you thought they we like, for good or bad. Ken Starr was one of those people who was very different from what I expected. I guess I thought he'd be somewhat dour and rigid. But he was very friendly, self-effacing and humble. I asked what you get for being Time Magazine's Man of the Year. "Nothing," was the answer.

Of course, that both is and was false. He leveraged his fame into numerous other well-paid jobs, pursuing several questionable and/or distasteful legal theories. And that's before we even get to the hypocrisy (he actually said it was “unconstitutional” to impeach a President) and incompetence (failing to address sexual violence at Baylor).

A long time ago, I interviewed Adolf Hitler and what a nice guy he was. He even offered me extra whipped cream to go with my apple strudel and anyone who goes to that trouble has to be a nice guy. I think it's really important for me to say that about Hitler because everything youse might know about Hitler could be so misleading without having the full picture.

Bang that crash symbol for longtime (and well traveled) drummer Anton Fier. Always in the band that just missed breaking free of the underground, Fier was a founder of The Golden Palominos, and was also celebrated for his work with The Lounge Lizards, The Feelies, The Lodge, Pere Ubu, The Voidoids for a short period, and in whatever Bob Mould called his backing band. He was part of several of John Zorn's noise orchestras, that pretty much were the best and the worst of what the nineties had on offer, depending on your speed, but he was terrific either way.

I don't have anything for the juke box thread, because footage of him is scarce, but you can find digestible versions of what he did in the heart of the Palominos catalog as well as the funner, early Feelies.

Still alive by all accounts is fellow drummer Anton Fig, who will probably still be confused with him.

On reflection, it's hard to believe there was a time that professional NFLers had to go to a racquetball/fitness club to throw weight around, and that their entire lives weren't just one big gym. Greg Buttle was the only guy I remember playing racquetball.

John Hadl, star quarterback who threw mad bombs to Lance Alworth in the old AFL for the S.D. Chargers and then to Harold Jackson for the L.A. Rams of the NFC, 82.

John was one of the first star quarterbacks of the AFL and led coach (Air) Sid Gillman's devastating offense to perfection. Running backs Keith Lincoln and Paul Lowe rounded out the backfield.

There are many who believe the 1963 SD team would have won a super bowl against the NFL Champ Chicago Bears. (I'm one of them) Gillman called Chicago coach George Halas to challenge his team and Halas declined.

Kirstie has a kinfusing bio. She married a guy from her hometown with the same last name as her, divorced him a few years later, continued with his name, or her name, it's not clear.

Then she married a guy with the first name of Parker. But two of her kids have the last name of Parker.

Anyhow, it's too bad that she died, and I expect there will be a ton of Scientology intrigue around the death and estate.

I worked this one out. Parker Stevenson is actually Richard Stevenson Parker. He rearranged his names to come up with a professional moniker, clearly to keep from being confused with 1994 Met Rick Parker, but kept his name legally. Professionally, Parker is his first name, but after work, it's his last name.

I don't remember although it's quite possible; fewer cameras then, slower to be able to check all angles, etc. The angle that finally caught him was a ground level

end-zone angle so certainly not the one the network would have been showing live.

The main controversy on that play wasn't whether FH caught it before it hit turf (although that was one point of contention) but the even harder to discern question

as to whether the carom that caused the huge rebound in the first place came off the offensive or defensive player, a distinction which made a difference since rules

at the time (since changed) made an offense-to-offense rebound, whether intentional or not, a non-legal catch.

So not only is this weekend the 50th anniversary of the 'immaculate reception' game (with Pitt playing the Raiders in an obvious marketing move by the NFL) but

Franco was due to have his number retired by the Steelers that day as well (I'm less gung-ho about number retirement than most but here even I've got to say

WHATTOOKEMSOLONG?!?! ... dude retired as the 3rd leading rusher in NFL history!).

Harris, btw, apparently sounded and claimed to feel fine Tuesday afternoon during an interview with Chris Russo about that game and upcoming number retirement.

I know that a lot of folks have listened to Russo and thought to themselves 'You're killing me Chris', but in this case it may actually have happened. No cause of

death made public yet but Harris was dead only hours later.

Also no cause of death listed so far for Reds pitcher Tom Browning at just 62, but one article mentioned that his wife died just earlier this year. And while I figure

that all (Five) of their kids are grown, that's still rough.
