Water main break at the end of our street. Water gushing out one lawn

and the sewer across from them. DPW on the scene, holiday payola!!

2022, just how I pictured it.

We got an Alexa as a Christmas gift from my parents. Still learning what it can do and not do. My wife says I don't have to say "please" and "thank you" when I ask it for stuff. But it just seems wrong not to do that. Habit.

Do any of you guys have one of these things? Is it useful at all?

So far it tells me the weather and the score of the Islanders game.

I'm mostly #UnBezing in the new year. I don't trust them things anywhere near my house.

Among the zillion problems I have with them, as absurd as saying "Please" and "Thank you" to it may seem to you and your wife, my experience is that kids who simply give the machines imperative orders start addressing the world around them in the same way.

Good call. There are definitely worse habits than politeness!

I do wonder what it hears and records and passes on.

If you've ever seen the "Alexa Silver" SNL skit, that pretty much describes my parents working with their Alexa.

Eleven separate Springsteen songs explicitly involve judges and judgment.

At least one other song written for somebody else has a judge, as do six songs he's covered.

This, of course doesn't include songs like "From Small Things (Big Things One Day Come)," where the judgment is clearly implied (somebody shoots and kills somebody, is caught, and is awaiting parole by verse three) but not explicitly stated.

What sin is to Dylan, judgment is to Springsteen.

He showed up on Svengoolie last Saturday. I recognized his voice before he showed his face (degree of difficulty: 1).

If you're unfamiliar, Svengoolie is an old-style horror movie host who plays old films with corny jokes in between. The final gag is that when he tries to tell people the next week's show, he's interrupted by a doorbell and someone shows up at the door -- you only see his arm -- and tells a corny joke. Gottfried played the guy at the door -- arm only like always -- but popped out when it was done.

Excerpt:

Like a record 23 percent of Americans who've died in the past five years, the ultimate financial worth of his father's life was nothing — a number somewhere below zero.

That meant that what Dave Jr. and his two daughters were inheriting during a time of accelerating inequality in the United States was the exact opposite of intergenerational wealth: his father's end-of-life expenses, thousands of dollars in debts, a leftover bottle of anti-depressants, and the Ramsey family's continued regression from the middle class into the expanding bottom of the American economy.

the last few minutes of any non-blowout basketball game can be brutally paced. there needs to be a rule that you lose your timeouts as the game goes on or they all convert to "10 second timeouts" that you can use to substitute or for when you are having trouble in-bounding or grab a loose ball and you are on the floor or whatever but you dont really stop the game

The main culprit is that there are like 75 time-outs per team per half. That may be a bit off but there are enough for a coach to call a time out, design a play, then, before the ball can be inbounded, he calls another time-out when he gets a look at what defense the other coach decided on during his time-out. I have no idea why anyone would think that's an interesting part of the game except that college coaches have more power than some third world dictators so no one is going to take away from them the right to micromanage each second of the clock.

I wasn't even watching the game I referenced. But when I flicked by ESPN a full three hours after the tip-off, it was still going.

Normally in college hoops, that final minute grind bumps what should be a two hour game (comprising 40 minutes of action) up to 2:20. I have no idea what took that one to 3:00 but I guarantee you it wasn't something I'd want to watch.

Anybody but Will Smith would have been escorted from the premises. You attend these awards, you're famous, you have to accept that comedians are going to make fun of you and other famous people. You grin for the cameras and fume privately. It speaks to the entitlement Will Smith feels that he went up there and did what he did.

Every comedian in America will be saying, "Now don't pull a Will Smith on me" every time they tell a joke that offends someone.

I don't think Amber Heard is getting as much press as one of the Kardashians is for appearing at the Met gala. Something about her green dress, too. And one headline said that she almost had a heart attack, too. Which would probably be a good thing. Maybe if they all had heart attacks.

I got into a minor accident last night -- in a car wash. You think these places are safe.

I followed a huge white pickup into the wash, and we each got onto the conveyor thing. They paid for the super wash, which the extra things. So we're going along, and through the soap and brushes it looked like the pickup had stopped -- and I was still going.

I hit the brake, which, of course, did nothing since we're on a conveyor belt. I threw it in park, which also did nothing. The pickup then seemed like it was now crooked on the belt and I think I hit it. I'm not sure, with all the brushes and things going on.

The whole thing came to a stop, and I stepped out of the car. The truck straightened out and moved forward a bit as the attendants were running over. It looked like a little part in my grill had popped out a little, but it slipped right back into place.

Turns out the woman driving the pickup turned the steering wheel and her tire caught one of the low brushes that stick out when you pay for the super wash, which is what pushed her truck offline and stopped the belt eventually.

We all drove out and I looked the car over and luckily no damage. She was claiming there was a scratch on the handle of her bed door, but that's way above my hood so there's no way it was from me. It was probably there before she even drove in the car wash.

Pretty scary. I was worried not just about hitting the truck in front, but the cars behind me hitting me!

In a quick Googling of "Hit and Run" and "Police are looking for," the first 10 hits that identify the make of the suspect's car are:
•
Dark-colored Volkswagon (Miami–Dade County, FL)

  •
Dark-colored Toyota sedan (St. Petersburg, FL)

  •
Grey Honda sedan (Yuba City, CA)

  •
Dodge Durango (Barry Township, MI)

  •
Blue or gray Chevrolet Silverado Z71 with a hardtop (Irving Park, IL)

  •
White Ford F-150 pickup (Longview, TX)

  •
Jeep (Saginaw, MI)

  •
Black Toyota Corolla (Bedford County, VA)

  •
White Toyota Highlander (Chicago, IL)

  •
2009 GMC Sierra pickup truck (Dallas, TX).
  •
My main takeaways are (1) the world is a dangerous place, and (2) we made a rough deal when we decided to build our world around cars.

That's funny. My wife made that observation I posted and my casual viewing of local NY tv news gave me the feeling the mix of cars involved in local accidents is different from what you posted. My view is that Subarus aren't mentioned because people who own them don't drive that fast.

La Choy has been around since the 1920s, and has been sold off to new conglomerates a few times.

We had an Italian-Americn family in the neighborhood named LaJoie, and we sang the jingle to them when we played with them, but I think we privately thought their parents owned the company. While they didn't, it's true that the company has never really had Chinese or Chinese-American principals.

So it appears that none of Baker Mayfield, Sam Darnold, or Josh Rosen -- the 1st, 2nd & 4th drafted QBs in the 2018 NFL draft, and the 1st, 3rd, and 10th

picks overall -- are good enough to play for the Cleveland Browns. I'm going to repeat that for emphasis with the help of Garrett Morris who'll be reading

it for the hearing impaired: NONE OF THOSE GUYS ARE GOOD ENOUGH TO PLAY FOR THE CLEVELAND F. BROWNS!!!!

And not even that they're not good enough to be starters, they're not good enough for the roster of a team that was last good during the Eisenhower

administration. But just this summer they've ...

    a) already had Mayfield but couldn't wait to dump him, in this case on the Carolina Panthers (a team not much better than the Browns in recent years)

for like a 6th round draft pick

    b) had no interest in trying out Darnold despite not having a starting QB at all, leaving Sam to wind up backing up Baker Mayfield on the Panthers!

    and

    c) now cut Rosen from being the back-up to the back-up to the guy who will eventually be the starter assuming he can hold the number of felony

complaints down until his suspension is over sometime in November

So remind me again why the THOUSANDS OF HOURS of pre-draft "analysis" is so important to pay attention to when, just four years after all three were

drooled and fawned over [Remember 'Suck for Sam'?], only one is even a starter and that's mainly just for a lack of a real one.

btw, Josh Allen was the 3rd QB chosen with the 5th overall pick that same year while Lamarr Jackson was 5th/32nd. Those two turned out to be much

better choices even though not picked as high, something I'm sure all the touts will NOW tell you they saw all along back then.

Seafood watch group lists New England lobster as seafood to avoid

The Monterey Bay Aquarium's Seafood Watch program is advising consumers to avoid eating lobsters and some other types of sea creatures. According to a report released by the group on Tuesday, the gear used in fishing for lobster and other seafood is known to entangle the endangered North Atlantic right whale.

The population of the North Atlantic right whale has shrunk by 30% in the past decade and there are now fewer than 340 of them alive.

It is because of the danger the gear puts on the North Atlantic right whale, the widely respected world leader in seafood rankings is asking consumers and businesses to avoid lobster, all East Coast snow crab, several species of flounder and Atlantic cod.

My alternate plan is to teach the whales to eat something else.

Listed for more than $5.5 million, the home on 22 Ketcham Road in Ridgefield was where Steinman lived for nearly 30 years until his death in 2021, according to the listing. Steinman was the primary composer for Meat Loaf's 1977 debut album, “Bat Out of Hell,” which went on to become one of the top-selling albums of all time.

If I were you, I'd be very, very scared.

Or, did your phone have a scheduled software update that failed twice before it was successful? And showing you the new screen is their way to let you know it happened? My Apple usually sends a message alerting me to a scheduled upgrade before it does it. Is Samsung different?

Still happening? I assume you're asleep, but maybe you're not? do you sleep-fumble for your phone and end up taking a photo? or does something trigger Google assistant, like you've woken up briefly at that hour and touch your phone in some way and something's touching the screen? Philly loses the title 3-0 in extras!!!

Wait, why is this in the NON-baseball forum? Because that was the result of the MLS championship game!!

So I don't even follow MLS so wasn't watching, but I flicked by it and saw the two teams (PHI/LA) were tied at 2 in about the middle of a 30-minute OT so figured I'd hang with it for the outcome.

And within a minute or two there's a wicked crash between a Fhilly phoward and LA goalie. Goalie is carted off and needs to be replaced but not before being shown a red card while laying on the

turf. They can replace the keeper of course but someone else has to come off and LA will play the remainder down a man.

When play resumes Philly scores off a rebound and now the game has just a few (Five?) minutes of stoppage time left. So it's over, right? No, LA scores a minute or two later despite only ten men

on the field and now they go to PKs. LA, going first, gets stopped so big advantage Philly. Except that they miss ALL THREE kicks they take and never even get to their final two because by that

point LA nails their third straight kick for the insurmountable 3-0 win.

Not sure where this one ranks in the pantheon of soccer championship chokes but it's got to be up there.

Tough draw of the cards for LA backup keeper John McCarthy, but he walks off a hero.

Maxime Crépeau, the regular goalkeeper for Los Angeles, is one of the top MLS keepers and a member of the Canadian national team. There's a lot of concern for his career now after what didn't look to be much but is reported to be a pretty brutal injury. The penalty was correctly called on him though.

Having run this race in 2019, I can tell you that despite the fact that the race touts itself as taking place in all five boroughs, the jaunts through both Queens and Bronx are very brief in duration, and Staten Island is only used to dump runners for hours of pre-race curb sitting. Nearly all of the course that isn't a bridge is either Brooklyn or Manhattan.

Apparently all three of the victims are UVA football players.

I'd like to think that the Sunday night shooting and the game results from Saturday are unrelated but it's tough to simply rule it out.
