The Padres are going to be tough to beat today if they can find a jungle to hide in.

Gwreck

This opposing pitcher, Chris Young, is an interesting guy.

Went to Princeton (Political Science degree), played Center on the Princeton basketball team; was offered a contract by the Sacramento Kings to play professionally.

The ad behind home plate is disturbing. I think it's for Jack in the Box. Looks like a character from my nightmares.

I'm surprised no team has adopted that look as their regular uni.

I kind of like the olive green hat though.

TheOldMole

What's with the cammos anyway?

TransMonk
Apr 22 2006 10:28 PM

I don't mind the green...just the desert camo.

It feels like I'm watching an 80's action flick where SD are special forces and the Mets, in their black unis, are fighting ninjas.

I can't wait until Chuck Norris pops out of the bullpen.

And while we have other threads going on about the Mets' trade strategies, how bad does Texas trading Young and Adrian Gonzalez for Eaton and Otsuka look now?

In ESPN's Gamecast, Ramon Catro's at bat never took place. Both the game log of plays and the boxscore skip from Nady driving in a run with the GIDP to Endy Chavez flying out to end the inning. At least now they have updated the score to 4-1.

Pedro with a 1-2-3 inning in the bottom of the 3rd.

Gwreck
Apr 22 2006 11:10 PM

I've tried the ESPN gamecast, but I still find it decidely inferior to the MLB gamecast. I used to like the ESPN gamecast of 4-5 years ago, but have stuck with MLB since. Still the superior interface.

Batting after the pitcher, Jose really needs to remember to take some freaking pitches. I think he's pressing, what with the slump he's in.

Rockin' Doc
Apr 22 2006 11:15 PM

I've been playing around with both. Not really crazy about either one, but I have to have something for my baseball fix.

I watched the first 5 innings of the White Sox and Twins game earlier this evening. The Sox were teeing off on Radke and while Freddie Garcia was effectively enticing the Twins to repeatebly hit line shots at the White Sox defenders for outs. Freddie wasn't folling many hitters, but he was getting them out all the same.

What channel did you see the CHW-MIN game on? I was watching WGN, and had to mute it. Those guys -- calling every player by their first name, ("Paulie playing behind the runner with 2 outs") actively rooting with every play are absolutely awful. Worse than Sterling even.

Rockin' Doc
Apr 22 2006 11:29 PM

I was watching on WGN. Hawk Harrelson takes rooting for the home team to new heights (or lows). He actually said, "Come on Joe, take him out of here" during one Joe Creedy's at bats. I lived 5-6 blocks from Old Comiskey in the early 1980's, so the White Sox are my AL team. Harrelson was announcing their games back then, so I guess I'm accustomed to his being the ultimate "homer".

Rockin' Doc

Wright is trying to tire Young out in this at bat alone. Hard earned walk in a good at bat by Wright.

Eh, between him and Santo on the Cubs broadcasts it's nearly impossible to watch the local games. I've been living in Chicago for a good chunk of the past few years and still am astonished by how bad they are as announcers.

ESPN gamecast has a much improved look this year, but it is usually anywhere from 1 to 3 batters behind MLB in my opinion.

abogdan
Apr 23 2006 01:01 PM

ESPN's is much better this year, but it's just toooo big for my tastes. I can have the MLB gamecast in the corner of my screen and still have plenty of room on my screen to do other work. With ESPN's size and layout it's much tougher to do that.

Rockin' Doc
Apr 23 2006 02:02 PM

I ran ran ESPN gamecast and MLB Gameday side by side last night for the final 3 innings. There was no appreciable difference between the two as far as the speed with which they posted pitches and results.. Pinch hitters and pitching changes were noted a little quicker on ESPN. The one thing I found annoying with MLB Gameday, was the ads being run between innings. I truthfully preferred the silent dimming of the screen employed by ESPN. Overall, I didn't notice much difference between the two other than their aesthetics and layout.

Frayed Knot
Apr 23 2006 03:13 PM

I think the game-cast (or whatever they call it) at CBSportsline.com is better than either of them. The others are too "busy" and the fact that they're far too interested in getting you to participate in their links, pop-ups, fan polls, and all other sorts of interactive cross-promotional nonsense makes them tougher/slower to both load and use.
Both the MLB & ESPN sites make my computer throw up at times.

I just read through this thread and am surprised that no one caught another of Mex's comments that I found interesting.

He and Gary were talking about the 14 inning affair from the night before and of course the 16 innining playoff game against Houston came up.

Keith said that that game was so tense and stressful that he went through a full 2 & 1/2 packs of cigarettes over the course of the game. 2 & 1/2 packs!

When Gary expressed surprise that he was able to continue playing while inhaling all of that crap. Keuith said that when he woke up the next morning he could barely breathe.

Side note: According to Keith he hasn't had a cancer stick in 11 years.

Frayed Knot
Apr 24 2006 02:18 PM

In his book on the '85 season; 'If At First', Keith often admits to going through a lot of ciggies during a game (half-pack, maybe a pack?) but usually only a few puffs from each - more for nerve purposes than anything else.
2-1/2 is certainly way over the top but I wonder how "much" of them he actually had.

]: According to Keith he hasn't had a cancer stick in 11 years

Well there was no way he was getting past 1st base with Elaine if he didn't quit.

Centerfield
Apr 24 2006 02:25 PM

Here is the amazing part...if Keith smoked 2.5 during the game, presumably he had a few before it as well. Pearlman's book details how they partied on the plane (ripping it apart) and then went out afterwards.

I'm guessing his total for that 24 hour period must have been around 4 packs.
