Still no beltran

Bret Sabermetric
Apr 24 2006 09:23 PM

Cooby--are you beginning to see that as a problem here? Either a problem with communicating with Beltran (if he had told them that he felt like he would be able to play for this long, they could have DLed him), or recurrent problems getting reliable medical reports back, or cluelessness in gauging decisions like DLing or day-to-daying players? When did he first get hurt? Must be over a week ago by now.

cooby
Apr 24 2006 09:25 PM

Well, yeah, even I'm starting to wonder.

But in a kindly way.

Gwreck
Apr 24 2006 09:26 PM

Beltran has played, just not in the field. He wouldn't have pinch-hit unless they thought he would be back sooner than a DL stint would take. No reason to assume lack of foresight or incompetence.

I'm sure Beltran would be playing if able. Today's his birthday. Hope Jorge doesn't go wild at the party.

mlbaseballtalk
Apr 24 2006 10:04 PM

Will Cain be Able?

Yeah yeah, sorry just couldn't resist!

Gwreck
Apr 24 2006 10:05 PM

No WFAN gameday audio forces me to the Giants broadcast, where we learn through the Felipe Alou interview that Ray Durham isn't available tonight (irritated tendon in left hamstring).

Well, yes. But if he hadn't pinch hit, and he was hurt worse than they thought, they might have decided to retro him onto the DL. Seems to me they may effectively lose him for two weeks without getting a replacement, like Diaz (who himself is DLed, I know, but after going to Norfolk). Any time a player misses a week, you're probably better off DLing him, don;t you think?. Would you rather have a week of Beltran, or two weeks of Diaz (or better yet, Milledge)?

Nymr83
Apr 24 2006 10:25 PM

I sense a quiet IGT tonight.
Nady got a late break on what became a Vizquel single and Howie Rose says he was scared that Matsui wouldn't stop running towards him making him pull up short. You gotta call Matsui off Nady!
Floyd makes a warning track catch.
Bonds up with Vizquel on 1B.

Gwreck
Apr 24 2006 10:27 PM

There'd be no Milledge, no way. Let him play half a season at triple A before we get to the idea of calling him up. It's not unnecessary delay -- it's just common sense.

As for Diaz, I can see the point, but what's not figured into that equation is, of course, that you'd have Nady in center and Diaz in right. I wonder how many runs that defense might cost us?

Gwreck
Apr 24 2006 10:27 PM

Bonds is hitting .229...the intentional walk here is stupid.

Nymr83
Apr 24 2006 10:28 PM

Glavine walks bonds, thats lame, for Bonds to beat you he has to homer, now that you've pushed Vizquel to 2b it only takes a single to score a 2-out run.

abogdan
Apr 24 2006 10:29 PM

Or a homer by Alou to score three of them.

Nymr83
Apr 24 2006 10:29 PM

Alou crushes one and the Mets get what they deserve for an ill-advised intentional walk.
Kaboom, you wusses.

Johnny Dickshot

ARRRRRRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHH

THATS what happens when you WALK a guy who is slumping!

Johnny Dickshot

It's what happens when you let a pop fly drop in front of an outfielder THEN wuss out and walk a guy.

Valentine almost never walked Bonds.

Edgy DC
Apr 24 2006 10:32 PM

Oh, I'd say playing like shit doesn't compare to strategizing like shit.

Gwreck
Apr 24 2006 10:33 PM

I can see a problem with grooving a 1-2 fastball to Alou, and that being Glavine's fault, but still, no more intentional walks. He has **1** homer all year. When he's hitting, maybe then we can start walking him again. I'm pissed.

Giants announcer Mike Krukow just commented on Beltran's absence: "The Mets don't expect him to play this series." True?

abogdan
Apr 24 2006 10:58 PM

True. In the pre-game on the FAN, Howie said Willie said he's only use Beltran in a situation where they needed a big hit and he could pinch hit, but not need to run much - bases loaded, late in the game w/2 outs, etc. He should have been DL'ed a week ago.

Glavine's settled down since Alou's homer. 7 in a row. Still 3-0 SanFran.

Nymr83
Apr 24 2006 10:59 PM

the offense has been slumping bigtime without Beltran, it might just be coincidemce but he really helps spark the lineup since the guys in front of him arent going to get on base enough

abogdan
Apr 24 2006 11:01 PM

Howie also said they'd reevaluate Carlos on Friday before the Atlanta series and see if they need to make a move then. Howie said that conversation was the first time Willie has discussed the possibility of bringing up Milledge. He also said Omar didn't sound too excited about the idea since he'd need to make an additional roster move first to get Milledge on the 40-man. Wouldn't want to see someone claim Jose Valentin on waivers.

Centerfield
Apr 25 2006 12:12 AM

I don't understand this. The guy is hitting .220, is about as great a double play candidate you could ask for, and instead they load the bases to give Heilman no safety net to a guy who has already jacked a 3 run HR.

Intentional walks are for losers.

Alou has long been one of the great "hands" hitters in MLB. He has a knack for adjusting his hands during a swing - either pulling them in so as to not get jammed or otherwise correcting in mid-hack.
He would have had an even better career if not for at least 2 devastating injuries which wrecked 2 full seasons and pieces of others.

Another shit game by the Mets. That Braves series this weekend is taking on added importance if the Mets wat to stay on top of the East.

i don't know Zvon, in that same sentence the radio guys claimed that the Mets won a "big playoff game" here in 2000. The Mets, od course, did not play the Padres in the 2000 playoffs.

For some reason I keep thinking we are in San Diego, probably because we just came from there and i had their game with the D-backs up on GameDay all night.

Naw -- tonight they lost at AT&T Park. I'm sure they lost some of those 21 at Pac Bell. And 3Com Park.
