Still no beltran
Bret Sabermetric Apr 24 2006 09:23 PM |
Cooby--are you beginning to see that as a problem here? Either a problem with communicating with Beltran (if he had told them that he felt like he would be able to play for this long, they could have DLed him), or recurrent problems getting reliable medical reports back, or cluelessness in gauging decisions like DLing or day-to-daying players? When did he first get hurt? Must be over a week ago by now.
cooby Apr 24 2006 09:25 PM |
Well, yeah, even I'm starting to wonder.
Gwreck Apr 24 2006 09:26 PM |
Beltran has played, just not in the field. He wouldn't have pinch-hit unless they thought he would be back sooner than a DL stint would take. No reason to assume lack of foresight or incompetence.
mlbaseballtalk Apr 24 2006 10:04 PM |
Will Cain be Able?
Gwreck Apr 24 2006 10:05 PM |
No WFAN gameday audio forces me to the Giants broadcast, where we learn through the Felipe Alou interview that Ray Durham isn't available tonight (irritated tendon in left hamstring).
Bret Sabermetric Apr 24 2006 10:09 PM |
Well, yes. But if he hadn't pinch hit, and he was hurt worse than they thought, they might have decided to retro him onto the DL. Seems to me they may effectively lose him for two weeks without getting a replacement, like Diaz (who himself is DLed, I know, but after going to Norfolk). Any time a player misses a week, you're probably better off DLing him, don;t you think?. Would you rather have a week of Beltran, or two weeks of Diaz (or better yet, Milledge)?
Nymr83 Apr 24 2006 10:25 PM |
I sense a quiet IGT tonight.
Gwreck Apr 24 2006 10:27 PM |
There'd be no Milledge, no way. Let him play half a season at triple A before we get to the idea of calling him up. It's not unnecessary delay -- it's just common sense.
Gwreck Apr 24 2006 10:27 PM |
Bonds is hitting .229...the intentional walk here is stupid.
Nymr83 Apr 24 2006 10:28 PM |
Glavine walks bonds, thats lame, for Bonds to beat you he has to homer, now that you've pushed Vizquel to 2b it only takes a single to score a 2-out run.
abogdan Apr 24 2006 10:29 PM |
Or a homer by Alou to score three of them.
Nymr83 Apr 24 2006 10:29 PM |
Alou crushes one and the Mets get what they deserve for an ill-advised intentional walk.
Johnny Dickshot Apr 24 2006 10:29 PM |
Didn't take long to start playing like shit in this game.
mlbaseballtalk Apr 24 2006 10:30 PM |
ARRRRRRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHH
Johnny Dickshot Apr 24 2006 10:32 PM |
It's what happens when you let a pop fly drop in front of an outfielder THEN wuss out and walk a guy.
Edgy DC Apr 24 2006 10:32 PM |
Oh, I'd say playing like shit doesn't compare to strategizing like shit.
Gwreck Apr 24 2006 10:33 PM |
I can see a problem with grooving a 1-2 fastball to Alou, and that being Glavine's fault, but still, no more intentional walks. He has **1** homer all year. When he's hitting, maybe then we can start walking him again. I'm pissed.
mlbaseballtalk Apr 24 2006 10:37 PM |
Good point
DocTee Apr 24 2006 10:50 PM |
Giants announcer Mike Krukow just commented on Beltran's absence: "The Mets don't expect him to play this series." True?
abogdan Apr 24 2006 10:58 PM |
True. In the pre-game on the FAN, Howie said Willie said he's only use Beltran in a situation where they needed a big hit and he could pinch hit, but not need to run much - bases loaded, late in the game w/2 outs, etc. He should have been DL'ed a week ago.
Nymr83 Apr 24 2006 10:59 PM |
the offense has been slumping bigtime without Beltran, it might just be coincidemce but he really helps spark the lineup since the guys in front of him arent going to get on base enough
abogdan Apr 24 2006 11:01 PM |
Howie also said they'd reevaluate Carlos on Friday before the Atlanta series and see if they need to make a move then. Howie said that conversation was the first time Willie has discussed the possibility of bringing up Milledge. He also said Omar didn't sound too excited about the idea since he'd need to make an additional roster move first to get Milledge on the 40-man. Wouldn't want to see someone claim Jose Valentin on waivers.
Nymr83 Apr 24 2006 11:03 PM |
perish the thought...
Gwreck Apr 24 2006 11:04 PM |
Oh, the horror if that were to happen. SC= Off the Charts
Edgy DC Apr 24 2006 11:05 PM |
See, Bonds is a human.
Gwreck Apr 24 2006 11:05 PM |
See? Not hard to retire Barry. Try it sometime.
TransMonk Apr 24 2006 11:12 PM |
They did.
Edgy DC Apr 24 2006 11:16 PM |
Cain. Stop this.
abogdan Apr 24 2006 11:17 PM |
The Mets might want to think about getting a hit sometime during this game.
Nymr83 Apr 24 2006 11:17 PM |
another lack of offense night for the Mets which has been all too common since the Milwaulkee series.
Johnny Dickshot Apr 24 2006 11:17 PM |
Stop what? A PERFECT GAME?
Gwreck Apr 24 2006 11:18 PM |
Really, any baserunner would be a start, what with this perfect game Cain has going here.
DocTee Apr 24 2006 11:20 PM |
SF announcer Duane Kuiper said Keith Hernandez stopped into their booth between innings-- I thought it was a segue into his misogynistic comments-- but it was only to ask "Who the heck is Matt Cain?"
TransMonk Apr 24 2006 11:21 PM |
This pitcher isn't exactly Cy Young either, this guy has been hit pretty well in his previous 3 starts.
cooby Apr 24 2006 11:22 PM |
Yeah, he's pitching a perfect game
soupcan Apr 24 2006 11:23 PM |
Well, the Mets do have a tendency to do that.
Zvon Apr 24 2006 11:23 PM |
yep-lets jinx him. Hes pitching a PERFECTO! That means no Mets reach 1st base, right? A perfect game....... How bout that?
abogdan Apr 24 2006 11:24 PM |
Matsui breaks it up with a single. Good job folks.
Gwreck Apr 24 2006 11:24 PM |
He had some decent minor league numbers last year, and was 2-1 with a 2.33 ERA and 0.93 WHIP in 7 starts for the Giants last year. He's projected as a future #1 starter. But still...
Zvon Apr 24 2006 11:24 PM |
thank you Kaz
Edgy DC Apr 24 2006 11:25 PM |
Vizquel owed Cain a dive there.
Nymr83 Apr 24 2006 11:27 PM |
Matsui on 2nd with nobody out thanks to an error, it is CRUCIAL that we get him home here, at the very least.
cooby Apr 24 2006 11:27 PM |
Ah, still a NO HITTER then?
Nymr83 Apr 24 2006 11:28 PM |
matsui to 3rd on a groundball.
Nymr83 Apr 24 2006 11:28 PM |
no, he reached on a single and went to 2nd on a throwing error on a pickoff attempt.
Johnny Dickshot Apr 24 2006 11:29 PM |
BV woulda squeezed here.
Gwreck Apr 24 2006 11:29 PM |
According to Willie Randolph via Tom McCarthy, he's not likely to start any game this series but is available for pinch-hitting.
Edgy DC Apr 24 2006 11:29 PM |
I'm not about Glavine batting here.
cooby Apr 24 2006 11:29 PM |
Good. I hate staying up late when the Mets get no hitted.
Zvon Apr 24 2006 11:30 PM |
yea, i think he would hv
Johnny Dickshot Apr 24 2006 11:30 PM |
Has WWSB pulled a squeeze yet?
Nymr83 Apr 24 2006 11:31 PM |
On the radio Rose just said "jose reyes' average is down to [whatever it is] but more importantly his OBP is .271" Have anouncers finally seen the light?
Johnny Dickshot Apr 24 2006 11:32 PM |
Way to scratch one out, team.
Zvon Apr 24 2006 11:32 PM |
Nice, reyes makes up for swingin at that shitty pitch with an RBI infield single.
Gwreck Apr 24 2006 11:33 PM |
Eh, not entirely sure about that. Maybe with the throwing-out of runners. LoDuca still has a .365 OBP.
Johnny Dickshot Apr 24 2006 11:36 PM |
Only his second hit on this whole trip (17 PAs), but a big one.
abogdan Apr 24 2006 11:36 PM |
LoDuca knocks in Reyes. 3-2 and Delgado is up.
Gwreck Apr 24 2006 11:37 PM |
I bet Carlos could hit McCovey Cove.
Zvon Apr 24 2006 11:37 PM |
Nice.
Willets Point Apr 24 2006 11:38 PM |
Or Randy Winn's glove. Piss!
Nymr83 Apr 24 2006 11:38 PM |
Delgado hits a flyball over 400 feet for an out. Baseball isn't fair sometimes.
Frayed Knot Apr 24 2006 11:38 PM Edited 1 time(s), most recently on Apr 24 2006 11:38 PM |
FUCK!!!! that ball's outta here in about 27 parks.
Zvon Apr 24 2006 11:38 PM |
UGHHHHHHHHHHHHHH
Johnny Dickshot Apr 24 2006 11:38 PM |
Nice play, Winn.
DocTee Apr 24 2006 11:39 PM |
DAMN. Did you see Carlos' reaction-- he knew it was gone-- just knew it!
TransMonk Apr 24 2006 11:40 PM |
Got 2 back...about time.
Willets Point Apr 24 2006 11:41 PM |
Glavine's going to give 'em back.
Nymr83 Apr 24 2006 11:42 PM |
I wouldn't walk Bonds here, but it's a better place to do it than the last time.
Edgy DC Apr 24 2006 11:44 PM |
I prob' would.
Gwreck Apr 24 2006 11:45 PM |
Stupid Giants fans booing after the walk.
Nymr83 Apr 24 2006 11:45 PM |
fuck how does bonds tag up there? forget niekro at 3rd, throw to 2nd and get the slower runner for the 2nd out!
Willets Point Apr 24 2006 11:45 PM |
Hope Willie has someone on the bullpen now. This could get ugly quick.
Nymr83 Apr 24 2006 11:46 PM |
i agree wiht the IW to setup the DP here.
Johnny Dickshot Apr 24 2006 11:47 PM |
Almost had Neikro at 3rd.
Gwreck Apr 24 2006 11:48 PM |
Big K of Feliz. 2 down.
Willets Point Apr 24 2006 11:48 PM Edited 1 time(s), most recently on Apr 24 2006 11:49 PM |
Generous umpiring there.
Nymr83 Apr 24 2006 11:49 PM |
Vizcaino with 2 outs and bags loaded.
Edgy DC Apr 24 2006 11:50 PM |
Great job, Tomasino.
TransMonk Apr 24 2006 11:51 PM |
Glavine's a stud.
Frayed Knot Apr 24 2006 11:51 PM |
Not yet.
Gwreck Apr 24 2006 11:51 PM |
95 pitches for Tommy. The Giants' best pinch hitters are lefties, so I think he goes back out next inning, unless we have to pinch hit for him.
Nymr83 Apr 24 2006 11:52 PM |
Wright is slumping badly.
Johnny Dickshot Apr 24 2006 11:53 PM |
Cliff can't catch a break. He's gotta start hitting them over the fences.
Nymr83 Apr 24 2006 11:54 PM |
He has had bad luck.
Edgy DC Apr 24 2006 11:56 PM |
HIgh-assed strike called on Matsui.
Willets Point Apr 24 2006 11:56 PM |
Wouldn't Matsui's reputation change with a big hit here?
Edgy DC Apr 24 2006 11:56 PM |
Same pitch (or lower) called for ball one.
Willets Point Apr 24 2006 11:56 PM |
Damn close though.
Zvon Apr 24 2006 11:56 PM |
yes
Nymr83 Apr 24 2006 11:57 PM |
ANOTHER wild throw by Cain advances a runner to 2B.
Willets Point Apr 24 2006 11:58 PM |
FSN Bay Area very interested in showing bored children in the stands.
abogdan Apr 24 2006 11:58 PM |
This is where you pinch hit for Chavez.
Frayed Knot Apr 24 2006 11:59 PM |
Kaz's hits this season - other than his HR - haven't exactly been things of beauty, but it's a start.
Gwreck Apr 24 2006 11:59 PM |
Pinch hitter? Please?
Nymr83 Apr 24 2006 11:59 PM |
Matsui safe at first on a bad throw by Vizcaino (he should have pocketed the ball for an infield hit and not risked an error to score Nady), the run doesnt score obviously but at least the inning is extended.
Willets Point Apr 24 2006 11:59 PM |
Run your little legs off Kaz!
Edgy DC Apr 24 2006 11:59 PM |
Kaz gets his hit. The run doesn't score via heroism by Vizcaino. Does his rep score?
Zvon Apr 25 2006 12:01 AM |
lol. a lil hit dont hurt either. Chavez cant keep it alive.
Gwreck Apr 25 2006 12:01 AM |
Good lord, TAKE A FREAKIN' PITCH, Chavez!
Nymr83 Apr 25 2006 12:02 AM |
WHAT THE FUCK?
Zvon Apr 25 2006 12:04 AM |
you have a good point. thought the same thing last game.
Nymr83 Apr 25 2006 12:07 AM |
i gave them a pass on the last game because they thought he'd e ready to play soon, well its not soon enough, the end of the SD series should have been the end of any reasonable waiting period. DL HIM.
Zvon Apr 25 2006 12:07 AM |
Glavines up to 104 pitches.
Nymr83 Apr 25 2006 12:08 AM |
3-0 to Lance Niekro with Bonds on deck? Niekro should be seeing a steady diet of fastballs this year not 3-0 counts.
Zvon Apr 25 2006 12:08 AM |
shit.
Centerfield Apr 25 2006 12:09 AM |
This road trip sucks. Other than the Pedro game and the 8th inning last Thursday, these guys have been painful to watch.
Zvon Apr 25 2006 12:11 AM |
I love these late west coast games. Always have. Win or lose.
Nymr83 Apr 25 2006 12:11 AM |
West coast trips usually go this way. They'll walk Bonds with one out which i wouldn't do already down 2 runs, now you NEED a DP or the game is essentially over.
Centerfield Apr 25 2006 12:12 AM |
I don't understand this. The guy is hitting .220, is about as great a double play candidate you could ask for, and instead they load the bases to give Heilman no safety net to a guy who has already jacked a 3 run HR.
Gwreck Apr 25 2006 12:12 AM |
Heilman inserted as the 9th batter, no double switch. Pitcher's spot due up 1st next inning. Interesting.
Centerfield Apr 25 2006 12:13 AM |
Not exactly Willie's best game tonight.
Zvon Apr 25 2006 12:14 AM |
negative thinking. Sounds like they decided before the game to walk Bonds whenever anyones on. The 1st one WAS rediculous. This one too.
Nymr83 Apr 25 2006 12:14 AM |
2-run single for Alou, intentional walks suck.
Gwreck Apr 25 2006 12:14 AM |
If nothing else, we need to fucking learn for the next 2 games that it's not worth walking Bonds.
Zvon Apr 25 2006 12:14 AM |
i would say not.
Centerfield Apr 25 2006 12:15 AM |
2 runs score as the IBB pushed another run into scoring position.
Johnny Dickshot Apr 25 2006 12:16 AM |
Poorly managed game.
Edgy DC Apr 25 2006 12:17 AM Edited 1 time(s), most recently on Apr 25 2006 12:17 AM |
I also don't like him bringing in Heilman just to throw an intentional walk.
Centerfield Apr 25 2006 12:17 AM |
Heilman strikes out Matheny.
Nymr83 Apr 25 2006 12:17 AM |
You know what i'd like to see if the Mets don't score? Bottom 8th- Jorge Julio pitching to Barry Bonds with runners on. You want to earn our trust back? here's a big chance.
Frayed Knot Apr 25 2006 12:17 AM Edited 1 time(s), most recently on Apr 25 2006 12:22 AM |
Alou has long been one of the great "hands" hitters in MLB. He has a knack for adjusting his hands during a swing - either pulling them in so as to not get jammed or otherwise correcting in mid-hack.
Centerfield Apr 25 2006 12:20 AM |
Valentin up.
Zvon Apr 25 2006 12:21 AM |
The DP was in order and who runs slower than Bonds? Until he starts playing like the Bonds we've seen the last few years i wouldnt worry about him as much as it seems Willie is.
Nymr83 Apr 25 2006 12:22 AM |
God decided to let Valentin get on, but not by any positive action on Valentin's part.
Centerfield Apr 25 2006 12:22 AM |
My mistake. Valentin reaches on a blistering ground ball that just ate up Neikro.
Zvon Apr 25 2006 12:22 AM |
errors kill for the other side too.
Nymr83 Apr 25 2006 12:23 AM |
i might feel differently in a tie game, but already losing i think yo pitch to the guy.
Nymr83 Apr 25 2006 12:24 AM |
Reyes fails to make contact, pretty disappointing for a guy with his speed who has a decent chance to reach on any ground ball.
Johnny Dickshot Apr 25 2006 12:25 AM |
Quick and dirty from the UMDB:In 55 games during Bobby Valentine's career, we intentionally walked Bonds 8 (eight) times.
Centerfield Apr 25 2006 12:26 AM |
LoDuca hits it well but it's tracked down. I'm thinking of not staying up to watch these games anymore.
