Arlie Latham

Julio Franco failed to became merely the second-oldest man to steal a base only because of an old thirdbaseman named Arlie Latham, who stole one at 49 in 1909. A few interesting things there.

1) Latham was a coach. Back in the day, coaches would occasionally enter the game in a blowout, keep fans around to watch an impromptu old-timers day in the last three innings. He played four games that year, but they were his first in ten years. Heck, they were his only four games in the 20th century, and they came in 1909.

2) Latham had a cool-assed nickname: “The Freshest Man on Earth.” I thought it said "Fastest," but, nope, "Freshest." Doug E. Fresh, eat your heart out.

3) Check out his prodigious steal totals! I understood the single-season stolen-base record going from Cobb to Brock to Henderson. But I guess that was merely the 20th-century record.

A few weeks ago one of the announcers mentioned the oldest player ever to score a run in MLB. Some guy named Charley sumtin. Irish name I think but all I keep coming up with is Charley O'Brian and I'm sure that's wrong.

Anyway, when it was mentioned I looked up the guy.
He played in the teens ... and then didn't for almost 20 years when he re-appeared in 1934 or so, had 1 AB, got a single, and later scored ... then never played again. He was 53 y/o and hadn't played in MLB since his 30s.

Gotta be some good story behind that one.

Never mind, was thinking of an old 1920's Yankee coach on Miller Huggins' staff, got the name confused
