Put these on my iPod and listened to them on my way to work (looking over my shoulder for the RIAA militia the whole time). Aerosmith is in trouble on my ballot.

Forgive the dumb question, but how to get those files to my ipod?

On second thought, I'm PM'ing Dickshot.

OK, Los Angelino Chicanobilly is taking their gaze off of Bostonian Funky Glam Metal and pursuing Athenian Alternarock.

REM, ¡se desafiamos!

Gearing up for the assault from East LA, REM has added two more from the fanboy collection, Life and How to Live It, replacing Man on the Moon, and Exuming McCarthy, replacing Me in Honey.

"Life" is a hard-rocker still retaining some of the new-wavy feel of the band's early records; Exuming McCarthy a good example of the solid mid-career work on Document. They're both fun and worth a long listen.

For your added musical pleasure, I've presented the selections in alphabetical order.

Carnival of Sorts (Box Cars)

Driver 8

Exuming McCarthy

It’s the End of the World as We Know it

Life and How to Live It

Nightswimming

Pilgrimage

Radio Free Europe

South Central Rain (I’m Sorry)

These Days

I'm strangely bitter about not getting a crack at Aerosmith. I guess they looked like a softer spot in the middle of the list.

If this were an actual fight, those pictures suggest a terrifying mismatch.

REM 5.5 - 4.5 Los Lobos

I like Los Lobos a lot, but I'm most fond of the traditional Mexican ballads, which probably wouldn't score as well here, over the rock stuff and the dirty, roadhouse blues (though I like all that, too).

My two favorite LL albums are probably Acoustic en Vivo and La Pistola Y El Corazon. Check 'em out SOMETIME!!!

"La Pistola y El Corazon" was the last cut from my list.

Thanks for the McCarthy. Cuz the Amazon Document doesn't include samples of that record. I use iTunes anyway.

Hey, all. Sorry about missing this challenge, Edgy. I forced myself to stay away from the Pool for a few days because all the crap was sucking all the life out of this place.

(And Aerosmith, America's Greatest Rock Band, is not a "soft spot" on the list.)

Yeah, we're tough critics. This contest has made me realize REM ain't much of a singles band anyway (well, I kinda knew that), and that a half dozen of one = 6 of another, for the most part.

Sorry about the bad "Nightswimming" link. I suck at teh interweb.

iTunes is a superior sampler to amazon, so go that way if you can.

The Amazon link to "These Days" plays Hyena, so to get to "These Days" click "Hyena" and vice-versa. I like Hyena by the way. Had a live recording where they did it long before LRP came out, and when I saw it listed by track on the day LRP came out, nearly soiled my BVDs. Then I was a little disappointed with the recording: I'd remembered it better.

Before I vote thanks for the clean links and to WP for the thievery tips. Listened to the collection several times already and like it:

"Will the Wolf Survive?" vs. "Carnival of Sorts (Box Cars)"
--I’ll give a slight edge to the Lobos here, only because CoS basically repeats the same verse twice while Lobos have more pressing concerns in mind, I think, about immigrants or wolves or something. “Lower Wolves” woulda been a better Chronic Town matchup here.

"Set Me Free (Rosa Lee)" vs. "Driver 8"
--REM. I'm telling yas: Train songs are almost unbeatable.

"The Neighborhood" vs. "Exhuming McCarthy"
--Tie. McCarthy’s not my favorite REM song, though I like the key change at the “enemy sighted, enemy met,” part. I just don’t have a great taste for slow blues numbers, though Lobos does their part well here.

"Down on the Riverbed" vs. "It’s the End of the World as We Know It"
--REM

"One Time One Night" vs. "Life and How to Live It"
--REM Thanks to gwreck for reminding me of this one. Puzzles me how the band professes to hate “Fables” which still stands up IMO as a solid outing all the way through.

"Angel Dance" vs. "Nightswimming"
--REM

"When the Circus Comes" vs. "Pilgrimage"
--Like ‘em both, only one can win. REM

"Tears of God" vs. "Radio Free Europe"
--REM

"I Wanna Be Like You (The Monkey Song)" vs. "South Central Rain (I’m Sorry)"
--I’ll give this one to the Lobos. Like that Mexican thing happening.

"Come on, Let's Go" vs. "These Days"
--LaBamba was not a good movie, but the song performances were all good and the musicians were well-cast: Brian Setzer doing Eddie Cochrane doing “Summertime Blues,” and Marshall Crenshaw playing Buddy Holly as a bit of an arrogant asshole and performing “Crying Waiting Hoping.” OK, edge to Lobos.

REM 6.5, Los Lobos 3.5

Ok, maybe not a singles band in the truest sense, but you could get a pretty good greatest his lineup going:

Losing My Religion
The One I Love
Man on the Moon
Everybody Hurts
It's The End of the World...
What's the Frequency, Kenneth?
Drive
Orange Crush
Imitation of Life
Leaving New York

I wonder how that lineup would do? (Not that I'm endorsing it).

For me? Probably 8-2 REM. It avoids the crappy singles (Shiny Happy People, Stand), and includes a winners. I'd leave off the two newest singles and put in Radio Song and their cover of Toys In The Attic. (But I'm an Aerosmith fan, so I'm biased on that last one.)

Losing My Religion
--never dug it

The One I Love
--OK, better stuff on Document

Man on the Moon
--Not bad

Everybody Hurts
--Turn the station when it comes on the radio

It's The End of the World...
--Nearly a novelty song, but well done enough

What's the Frequency, Kenneth?
--I like this one, seems a lottta voters here hate it

Drive
--Find it boring

Orange Crush
--I like the poppier stuff from Green: Pop Song 89 and Get Up woulda made better singles in the true sense

Imitation of Life
--couldn't even hum it

Leaving New York
--Never made an impression on me
