Chatter about a batter: Is a Conforto reunion a possibility?

Marshmallowmilkshake

Seeing stories that, given the expected frenzy to sign players when this deal is done, Conforto might be better off taking a short deal with the Mets to take a season to rebound, then hit the market when conditions are more favorable and there's time to let a deal develop.

Are the Mets even looking for an outfielder at this point? Would the team even want a one-year, $25 million deal with him? Does Conforto have a shot at a $100 million+ deal elsewhere in that frenzy?

Well, I certainly wouldn't pass on Conforto simply because the Mets have Mark Canha.

Conforto absolutely, unquestionably makes this team better in 2022.

oh hell yeah, i'd take conforto back. wouldn't mind if they got bryant instead, but yeah, man, i'm all about conforto. especially if it means him not becoming a [blech] phillie.

Re: Chatter about a batter: Is a Conforto reunion a possibility?

I don't know what his market would be after last year. Not sure which team out there will throw him the long-term deal he is looking for. But if the Mets can get him, it would be great!

Re: Chatter about a batter: Is a Conforto reunion a possibility?

He probably should have accepted to QO.

I read something recently that said that signing Conforto (or Bryant) won't cost the Mets a draft pick, but that's not true in Conforto's case. They get a draft pick if he signs elsewhere, and wouldn't get it if he signs with them.

That wouldn't stop me from signing Conforto to a one-year deal. The Mets are in win-now mode (as they should be) and if they can get him they should.

Re: Chatter about a batter: Is a Conforto reunion a possibility?

We are already likely to have extra pieces on offense even with the DH, so the top priority should still be another SP. That being said, if his market value is lower than I think or if Cohen's wallet is bottomless, then sure I'm interested.

Marcus Stroman tweeting today that he hopes Conforto will sign for a team other than the Mets

It is an anti Mets and Billy Eppler rant.

The Mets signed our paycheck. What an ungracious jackass.

Todd Zeile mentioned on one of the shows that there might have been some clubhouse issues with Marcus, which was a factor in the team not making an effort to resign him. I don't recall hearing that from others, but given the reduced access to the clubhouse, it might not have been apparent.

I predict reporters will never be allowed in the clubhouses again.

Maybe not, but a reporter can certainly get access to the players other ways.

I've seen enough of Marcus that it isn't hard to imagine a little of his personality going a long way.

Re: Chatter about a batter: Is a Conforto reunion a possibility?

There has been more Conforto chatter the last two days. The Mets need another outfielder (unless you think that Travis Jankowski is the answer). The OF might be Nimmo (L), Marte (R), Canha (R)/Dom(L). Given the date, perhaps he signs a one-year "pillow contract".

From Just Mets (a free newsletter):

[BLOCKQUOTE]At worst, Conforto would serve as depth at two positions in the outfield (for what it's worth Brandon Nimmo gets hurt frequently), and at best, he returns to the All-Star caliber form he demonstrated in both 2017 and 2020. It would remain to be seen if Conforto could earn an everyday role again with the Mets, but the designated hitter would afford him plenty of plate appearances anyway, especially against right-handed pitching (he had a .792 OPS against the right side in 2021). Conforto would also be valuable insurance for Mark Canha in the event he struggles against right-handed pitching or needs to be spelled overall. But between Conforto, Canha, Nimmo, Starling Marte, Dominic Smith and JD Davis, the Mets outfield depth chart would be as strong as any team in the league (assuming nobody is traded).[/BLOCKQUOTE]

Mets Blog reporting that the team offered him $100 million last year. I'm sure that's off the table now, and he's probably looking for something bigger. But it would have been neat to be able to lock him up.

Given the speculation that Conforto might have been one of the vax-less Mets, the NYC vaccination rule might be a disincentive for him to re-sign.

We need another bat. In a perfect world, he'd be righty, but I would be happy to welcome back Conforto. I think he'll bounce back.

I think it's kinda weird justice that Conforto can't find a job right now. He's just been too shitty at times to demonstrate he worthy of a giant deal.

That said I'd like to have him back too

Maybe he's got no contract because he's got no antibodies. Go play in Hoboken, cootie boy !

Re: Chatter about a batter: Is a Conforto reunion a possibility?

Going by this list on MLB's web site,, he is now the player with the highest predicted WAR value of any unsigned free agent, at any position. He's got to play somewhere, right?

I want him - I feel much more confident with Canha as my 4th OF than my third.

Re: Chatter about a batter: Is a Conforto reunion a possibility?

Cahna could well be the fourth depending on how other things shake out.

If ... McNeil retains his hold on second, and ...

... if Escobar is demonstrably a full-timer at third, and ...

... if Canó has enough left to be the regular DH, and ...

... Smitty continues his impressive spring, ...

... then Smitty is your leftfielder and Cahna is #4.

That's a lot of ifs that have to fall into place, but there certainly is something of an unsettled situation. They might keep an eye on it for a few days and jump on Conforto later if he's available.

Of course, most every team is probably one injury away from jumping all over Conforty.

Re: Chatter about a batter: Is a Conforto reunion a possibility?

Yeah, I see what you're saying. Dom can press the issue by continuing to hit, and hoping that Cano can justify his roster spot. I have CANHfidence in McNeil at 2B and Escy at 3B.

If McNeil and Smith are healthy, as they appear to be, then three of the four "ifs" are high-probability. That leaves Canó, but we still have JD Davis as a fallback. I think our depth in the lineup is good (I'm leery about catcher, but we might have the top catching prospect in the game right now), and unless the entire team stays healthy (an "if" I would not bank on), nobody will get squeezed out of playing time.

That doesn't mean I wouldn't take Conforto if he could be had at a discount, but Conforto at a discount still costs as much as Collin McHugh, Ryan Tepera, and Andrew Chafin. That would have given us depth where we most need it.

Re: Chatter about a batter: Is a Conforto reunion a possibility?

Yeah, all those ifs don't necessarily have to be there. I'm guessing the baseline plan right now is that Cahna is #4, taking at-bats against lefties from Smitty and Nimmo, depending on how each is hitting.

Re: Chatter about a batter: Is a Conforto reunion a possibility?

There's that, although a lot can happen in between Brandon Nimmo saying a lot can happen and something happening.

The current roster of batsmen seems pretty set. There's an apparent limit of 13 pitchers (although that's been waived the last two years).

But based on that implied number of 13 batters, that leaves two catchers:

  McCann

  Nido

... six infielders ...

  Alonso

  Canó

  Davis

  Escobar

  Guillorme

  Lindor

... and five outfielders ...

  Cahna

  Marte

  McNeil

  Nimmo

  Smitty

Now, you can switch McNeil with Davis (and probably should) as to which unit you imagine him a part of, but the thing is that most of those guys are locks. If you bring in Conforto or somebody else without moving somebody out, the odd man out is most likely Guillorme, and that would leave Escobar as the only shortstop backup. It certainly could be done (as the DH means, among other things, it's easier to go only two-deep at a position) but it's a tight squeeze.

Re: Chatter about a batter: Is a Conforto reunion a possibility?

Conforto now being the highest-end outfielder on the market, with Tommy Pham a distant second, I tried to figure out which team was thinnest in the outfield, by ranking them according to how many WAR Zips projects for their top five outfielders. I could have looked beyond the top five, but I can't work on this all night.

Always interesting to see which prominent names (Kris Bryant? Charlie Blackmon? Joc Peterson?) the projections are most pessemistic about, but it's really compelling to see Colorado's outfield the most starved for WAR after signing Bryant. It's also notable which teams (Atlanta, Anaheim, DC) have all their eggs in one basket, although the Angel outfield looks unspeakably stronger if you add Shoehi Ohtani to the depth chart.

My money is on Chicago, but don't sleep on division rivals like Phillie and Washington.

A reunion with Syndergaard in Anaheim also feels like a strong possiblity.

Re: Chatter about a batter: Is a Conforto reunion a possibility?

Wait, McNeils not an outfielder and Castellanos is no MFY. I also doubt the Rangers have two outfielders called Calhoun

Re: Chatter about a batter: Is a Conforto reunion a possibility?

I tried.

The data came from Fangraphs. They had both Smitty and McNeil returning on an outfielder search. I'll stick Smith in there and correctly team Castellanos. That'll sure make Philly look like the powerhouse they are in the outfield.

Re: Chatter about a batter: Is a Conforto reunion a possibility?

Changes made above.

Mets get knocked out of the top tier and are socializing among the middle class after knocking McNeil out for Smith in the outfield depth chart. The ZIPS guys are really unenthused about Smitty's projection, but hopefully (a) they're wrong, or (b) McNeil can play some outfield if they're right. It certainly makes a Conforto return more inviting for the Mets.

I'm still thinking Chicago or Anaheim.

Re: Chatter about a batter: Is a Conforto reunion a possibility?

The Rangers do indeed have two Calhouns in their outfield, one a sun person and one an ice person, which is always an awkward situation.

Nothing not awkward about the name Calhoun.

Stunned that Conforto has not signed yet. I know Boras clients often sign late, but at this point he is going to get, what, two weeks of spring training? And that's if he signs now.

Re: Chatter about a batter: Is a Conforto reunion a possibility?

The latest story from Scott Bore-us is that he waited to negotiate as he dealt with an offseason shoulder injury. I think he's trying to save face here.

I doubt at this point that he plays in a Mets uni in 2022. They seem to have moved on from him. If they were to bring him back, though, I'd be on board with it as a good move. Especially on a one year sweetheart deal where he can go prove 2021 was not a fluke.

Re: Chatter about a batter: Is a Conforto reunion a possibility?

Most of the weakest outfields up above are the happiest places to hit homeruns. It leads me to conclude that somebody's going to jump at him.

But Cincy doesn't tend to jump at anybody, do they?

Re: Chatter about a batter: Is a Conforto reunion a possibility?

I always thought if we'd lost Conforto we'd get Castellano- I didn't see Starling Marte coming, that's for sure.

Seems ridiculous that the Reds couldn't use him

Scott Boras, pictures or it doesn't count. Otherwise, it seems like you're making stuff up to avoid facing the fact that your client should have accepted the Mets QO off a down year, one where he says he was confused by the multiple instructions, hoped for a rebound and then hit the FA market anew.

Re: Chatter about a batter: Is a Conforto reunion a possibility?

I figured Thor would be the one who'd have trouble finding a taker, and he was one of the first free agents to sign. I'm stumped on this. Hopefully Conforto is smart enough to realize that Stephen Drew's career never recovered from his taking half a season off.

Honestly, a non-contending team who gets him on a discount could get value for him at the deadline, if not sooner. But we don't really know, outside of the QO, what Conforto and Boras have turned down to get here.

Re: Chatter about a batter: Is a Conforto reunion a possibility?

have to wonder if they had any inkling of this injury when rejecting the qualifying offer?

also, wouldn't you want to rehab on a team's dime in their facilities on a 2 year deal here?

If you take the official word of the Conforto/Boras camp at face value, he injured it while working out for teams well after the rejection of the QO

Re: Chatter about a batter: Is a Conforto reunion a possibility?

Conforto had to be injured after the QO; otherwise he would have taken it. He also turned down an earlier Mets offer of $100 million.

He expected to get more in free agency. It turned out to be a bad choice.

I don't take anything coming from Camp Boras at face value.

I liked Confortoboom, but glad we didn't get stuck with that lemon.

Re: Chatter about a batter: Is a Conforto reunion a possibility?

I'm sorry for Michael, a player that brought us many thrills, but his agent failed him. Boras got greedy: Conforto is a better player than he was in 2021, a year when he, and other Mets, were confused by the varying approaches to hitting (he also got married last winter and that could have been a distraction). Coming off a bad season you take the QO with confidence that the team will be better and that you are better than you were in the previous season. You then hit 30 home runs, play good D, and go on the market.

Re: Chatter about a batter: Is a Conforto reunion a possibility?

I'm with Chuck. If he was hurt before the QO and other offers, and there was any chance of surgery, he would've agreed to some deal or other.

This was probably just bad luck. Sometimes, things just don't go your way.

Re: Chatter about a batter: Is a Conforto reunion a possibility?

The bottom line with this is that if you don't have a better offer in front of you (like Syndegaard did) or aren't actively negotiating better offers with other teams, you take the QO. You don't have to like the QO, but it wasn't negotiated out of the CBA either. And unlike the franchise tag in football, you can only get it once. The best case scenario is what Stroman did, turning in a good season and getting a nice contract a year later without taking a pay cut in the meantime. The worst case scenario? Well, Conforto if he had taken the deal -- but he'd be $18M richer than he is now.

Sucks for Michael. Is that the same shoulder he ripped up in 2018?
