Re: Free Agency Frenzy March 2022

One of these NY beat wonks (Martino maybe?) theorizes that the Mets will not be players on Kris Bryant or Michael Conforto, but will instead focus on another starter, and more bullpen help, and bench depth. He threw out the idea that a one year deal for Kyle Schwarber might be more likely to happen given the potential shorter-term commitment it might take.

I wonder if a trade isn't more likely - even with the DH in place we have a glut of marketable hitters on the roster, some of them disaffected.

Re: Free Agency Frenzy March 2022

at this point, while i would love to see one of those hitters signing with the mets, i think it's more liklely that, if we're going to add more free agents, it'd be a carlos rodon. super-outside chance we take a chance on kershaw, though that's perhaps wishful thinking, and of wanting to see 8 cy young awards on one staff.

i think a trade is most likely, with two of dom, jeff, and jd going somewhere like cincinnati or oakland in return for an arm. which could, well, open up some room in the lineup too...

I have to think there was a lot of talking about trades on the down-low during the lockout, and the Mets have those three dangling out there.

I like Rodon. If he's healthy, he's filthy. But it's a big if. Everybody has Kershaw going to the Rangers or back to the Dodgers, but hmmmmm......

OAK has 3 SPs of interest. Frankie Montas is the best but he has another year on his contract so he's the most valuable. Montas for McNeil might be close. McNeil for Chris Bassist or Sean Manaea (LHP), both FAs after 2022, is lopsided to OAK so the Mets would have to get someone else.

The catcher, Rortvedt, has never hit more than 7 home runs in a minor league season. But he's a lefty batter, so he'll probably hit 25 in that bandbox.

Yeah, I assumed FF's return was the biggest no-brainer of the off-season. He was extremely popular there (Duh!) both with fans and teammates, plus the whole

coming off the WS thing and the MVP the year before, yadda, yadda.

OTOH ... as unsentimental as it is, the Braves have a history of Not retaining players rather than risk getting hit with significant decline in the back-end of contracts.

Andruw Jones was allowed to walk at age 30, Raffy Furcal was (supposedly) 27, plus McCann, Francouer, Klesko, etc. They got the cheaper years out of those guys

before opting out of the expensive ones and have shown themselves to be right on those calls a lot more often than they've been wrong.

Freeman is 32-1/2. Olson turns 28 next week.

Yes they did, in the prospects they gave up, in the long term commitment that they immediately gave Olson, and in the pr hit they're going to take for replacing their popular linchpin coming off a WS title.

But there's upside to it as well. Olson out-OPS+'d FF (153 - 133) last season and is 4-1/2 years younger so is a better bet to stave off a decline.

'Lanta probably thought Freddie was asking for too many years and figured this move would work out better in the long run. It might backfire on them but, as mentioned, they've been right on these types of pivot moves more often than they've been wrong.

The Rockies getting Bryant was a huge headscratcher.

The Rockies owner was a leader of the anti-player, pro-"Steve Cohen Tax" group during the lockout and then makes the biggest post-lockout signing to help his mess of a team finish closer to 4th place in the NL West. Jackass.

The Mets have been low-budget on relievers this offseason. That might be a by-product of some significant overreaches for relievers in the recent past, but I wouldn't consider the two-year deals that McHugh and Tepera got to be excessive. (I also think there is plenty of room for improvement in our pen.) As for Shreve on a minor-league deal, you can do worse. The big remaining lefty names (Andrew Miller is one of them) are past their prime, and Loup was gone before we had a GM in place.

A minor leaguer with a 6.95 ERA in rookie ball. This is why you don't deal guys who played hurt the previous year. If I were the Yankees, I'd have at least seen if Voit could still catch some (he was a catcher in the Cardinals' system). As it is they're one injury away from wishing they had him back.

if they thought there was ANY chance that Voit could even fake it behind the plate that they would have tried shoe-horning him in there.

Meanwhile, Carlos Correa is a twin. Actually he's probably not a twin but he is now a Twin.

Not the team I would have expected, nor would I have thought he'd wind up on only a three year deal.

The Twins couldn't have afforded Correa without the MFYs taking Donaldson off their hands.

ATL, 92 wins

NYM, 89 wins

I hope not.

Just a few years ago, I wanted good players at every position.

Now they have good players, but I don't feel they are good enough, considering the moves the Braves and Phillies have made.

I think it will take a Valentinian managerial effort to win with the current outfield. Adding Conforto would make me feel a lot better.

I'm much more concerned about the pen. And the rotation too; I want to believe that Peterson or Megil could step right in an be more than just replacement level, but I'm not sure. Our offense has 11 guys capable of producing an OPS above .800. That doesn't mean they all will of course, but I think we're well covered.

Now that trade makes a lot more sense from the Twins' perspective. My comments about Voit and dealing a guy following an injury-plagued season apply here too. The 2019/2020 Urshela is at least as good as Donaldson, and whatever risk comes with Urshela is more than negated by fitting Correa in their budget.

Post lock-out, I thought that they would (especially with SC's comment that it would be rude not to exceed the tax named after him):

1. Sign Kris Bryant

2. Trade for one of the Oakland starters

3. Sign a FA SP

4. Sign two LH RPs

5. Sign a FA OF

#1--no

#2--check

#3--no

#4--one out of two and it was Chasen Shreve.

#5--no, unless you count Travis Jankowski.

I'm not complaining--Billy got Max and Starling--but post-lockout it has been kinda quiet while ATL restocked (despite losing FF) and PHI got much better on offense. I think that Conforto would help.

Marte and Canha don't count?

I still think this team needs work-- the rotation and BP are essentially all RH. And there's not enough at bats for Davis/McNeil/Escobar (a signing we did not need).

I wonder what the market is for Conforto at this point. We heard Philly as a possibility, but they must be done. Colorado must be done after Bryant. The Dodgers must be done. Atlanta must be done. Where could he be a fit?

He might be better taking a short contract with us if nothing else to reestablish his value and try again next year. With spring training underway, he's gotta feel the clock ticking.

Re: Free Agency Frenzy March 2022

best for both sides would be to bring him back, presuming there'd been no burnt bridges. he makes our team that much better. even if adding him makes our lineup that much trickier to manage - but we'd have a hell of a bench, and plenty of backup in case cano isn't what he could, or should, be.

i'd still be inclined to offer him a 5x100 deal, similar to what the phils just gave castellanos. i'd bank more on conforto providing that value over the term of it, too.

but yeah, i don't see many other landing sports. maybe seattle...? though they just got winker, so who knows.

I am stunned that Opening Day is here and there are no takers for Conforto.

I'm not a player-agent and certainly not Scott Boras but I remember that if I was due for a performance review I would try to end the rating period on a successful project. Conforto went into his FA period after a fair-to-poor rating period and yet he was offered a raise, albeit for one year. Boras should have grabbed it and then Conforto should have worked his butt off in the off-season to improve so he could hit the FA market anew.

MLB artificially controlling the number of employers in the field also changes the calculus from what an employee in another industry might do in that.

There's no exciting new startup in the industry with a new business model and venture capital behind them who is going to offer Conforto profit sharing in exchange for coming on board and lending the new firm instant credibility.

If Conforto was an architect or an ad exec or a movie producer in a similar stage of his career, that might be exactly what he'd be doing.

My opinion is that firing your representation after visiting home tells us when added to his crying, that he wishes he stayed. ATL didn't want him at that price given his baseball age. They got a younger model for less money and had the cover of a WS trophy to do this without upsetting the fans too much.
