The Lunch Family is very familiar with the first single, having seen him performing it many times in recent years but mainly solo, and can report the recording with a band and all is a winner. So during the period of mandatory Covid-mitigation strategies, he was Covid-free. During the period where he was left to his own devices, he quickly contracted it. And the implication of the announcement is that it's somehow just lousy timing luck.

Also worth noting in this space that fellow Brooklynite John Flansburgh of They Might Be Giants was seriously injured after a show at the Bowery Ballroom when his cab got t-boned at an intersection by a drunk driver. Flans is the guitarist/co-leader, and this show was to be the start of a tour, now delayed indefinitely.
