"That boy sure is a runnin fool" - 2022 Running Thread

Good January for me, as I felt like I actually ran less than typical due to some brutally cold weekends, but I racked up 95.7 miles in January which is pretty close to on point for me. I expect my mileage to be down this year as I am virtually certain to not run or train for a full marathon.

scheduling and weather threatened to stand in teh way, but i managed to top 100 miles again in january, at 100.7 miles total.

february presents its own challenges, as i'm on the shelf for about 5-7 days or so to start off the already-shortened month, making friends with frosty legumes as i am. but once i'm able to resume activity, i should be full-speed nearly right away, so i don't think i'm throwing off my half-marathon training too much.

i'll consider it a win if i can end the month with close to 75 miles.

Is this a euphemism for masturbation? You can tell me I won't judge.

Better month of February, as I upped my mileage back over 100 to 107.7. I even ran a half marathon - though I forgot to post it here because it was by my own estimation a lackluster performance along a dull route (two loops of a residential neighborhood). I do this race each year because the race director is the man who hooked me up with my NYC Marathon bib in 2019, to support him in gratitude for the favor he bestowed upon me.

I ran a 1:54:18 - 99th overall out of 288 finishers and 9th of 20 in my age group. Splits showed that I got slower on the second loop, not a ton slower, but still (56:22/57:56). This was my 61st half marathon.

damn, 61 half marathons..

i finished february with 101.6 miles. maaybe pushed a little too much to get the distance as i upped my long runs to 12 miles. but i think i'm in good shape. got a little bit of a piriformis thing going on lately that is literally a pain in the ass, but also a kindly reminder to actually fucking stretch. so i don't see it stopping me too, too much.

still gunning for about a 1:45 or faster in april, for my meager 23rd half ;)

the speed is there, i just need to get it going over distance more readily.

Half marathon #62 in the books - a bit faster than the last one, at 1:52:25, and much more enjoyable, as I found a friend around mile 1.5 and ran nearly the entire race with her at a conversational pace. Not really racing, per se, but enjoying the event.

In other fitness news, the folks from Orange Theory Fitness were at the race expo and giving away three free classes. I went and took free class #1 this morning, at 5 AM (!), and loved it. I'm all about new things to do for fitness to mix it up as I have been in a rut of late. It's pricey and gimmicky but I don't care, let me join your fitness cult and take my money.

Not a ton of updates in this thread!

Another good month - 85 miles ran and 30 biked in June. I feel good - I have a couple of nagging things bothering me in my foot, my glute, and some grundle-adjacent soreness that I've not identified yet, but otherwise all is well.

Some friends and I were talking per-mile pace in the marathon last night, and then, shortly after, Eliud Kipchoge woke up in Berlin and ran a world-record 2:01:09 race, knocking 30 seconds off of a mark that already belonged to him.

That's a surreal pace of 4'37". That's pretty much the pace of Captain America circling the Tidal Basin and the National Mall.

The last time I ran a timed mile was 58 years ago. It was in the Army and I was wearing combat boots. I finished the mile in around six minutes.(A little less)

The idea of the 4 minute mile, first run by Roger Bannister, was amazing when he did it.

The idea of averaging 4'37" for 26 miles blows my mind.

copying from the injury thread, with an update below....

I joined a mushball league a few weeks ago. We had one practice that I went to. Caught a few balls, swung a bat a few times - hitting some decent line drives but no bombs - and managed to hold back vomit every time I saw the word trump on the ball. Apparently that's the manufacturer. Ugh. Disgusting really. But as long as I'm actively trying to strike it with a metal stick I figure I can work through it.

Anyways, later that week I'm running and notice my knee hurting. On the inside right below the joint. Pain doesn't go away after a few days and a few runs, so I go see the orthopedist. I figure maybe I strained a ligament somehow by wearing bad shoes… no clue really.

Anyways, quick description of the pain and a point to where it hurts, with an X-ray for good measure. Easy peasy lemon squeezy diagnosis. Torn meniscus. Twisting and such did it. Go get an MRI to confirm.

It does. Teensy radial tear. 4-6 weeks on the shelf for me. Should heal fine with proper rest and physical therapy. Probably won't ruin it by going hiking in the Pacific Northwest in 2 weeks with the fam. Biking good, running not so much. Didn't even bother to ask about swinging a bat.

I think I remember on one swing I maybe felt a light twang but I'm not really even sure. It didn't register at the time like “ow, ya done fucked yourself up” more so “hey it's been two years since you swung a bat in anger”

So yeah, I dropped out of mushball. Happily I never paid the league fee.

Hoping to start running in 6 weeks. I'm gonna aim for the over, just so I don't get cranky. Plus I figure the hiking will effectively act as an unofficial ‘setback' in my recovery.

Doc says it shouldn't do damage as long as I'm not stupid - my words not hers - but will all just come down to pain tolerance. I can deal with that.

Otherwise my knee looks great for the amount of running I do and my size. Healthy cartilage and good structure, though clear evidence of old battles with runners knee. So presuming I heal as expected, no surgery and no anticipated long term effects. Here's hoping.

Looking forward to running again sometime in mid August. Sigh.

All things considered it could have been much worse news. So I'm happy about that.

The only kicker is that I was just remarking on Thursday that At least I'm not missing out on Tuesday lunchtime pickup volleyball seeing as how that got disbanded when Covid hit. Guess what email I have sitting in my inbox when I get back from the docs on Friday…? Sigh.

update ---v

I still ain't running. the knee started to feel good last week, so under the advice of my PT, i tried an easy 1/2 mile. the knee didn't like it one bit. i mean, it felt fine during the run, and running felt perfectly fine. but after, it got sore again, and feels very much like the meniscus is still torn. not really sure if it's getting better, getting worse, or staying the same.

I'm not really sure what my next step is, other than to talk to the orthopedist tomorrow. grumble.

to say that i'm beyond frustrated would be an understatement.

I hope the Orthopedist will find it is just a carry over from the initial injury and not a new tear.

Wish you well.

Re: "That boy sure is a runnin fool" - 2022 Running Thread

Sorry you're laid up, MM.

I had a down month in August, just 66 miles run, as I had a medical procedure that required me to take a week off, plus a trip to urgent care on a Friday night that nuked one of my longer planned Saturday runs. I did get another 44 miles on my bike that month.

September has been more typical for me - already at 73 miles run and 22 miles biked with another 10 or so miles planned on foot for the remainder of the week.

Health-wise, my toe, which has been bothering me for some months due to some tendonitis, is feeling better, as is my lower back (partially as a result of that medical procedure). I am still having issues with getting a full breath, and am seeing a pulmonologist now to see if we can figure out why I am always so winded these days. I can run through it but its affected my pace in a pretty negative fashion. My average pace on easy weekday runs is now generally around 9:15/mile, a good 30-40 seconds per mile slower than would have been the case in 2018/2019 or so.

Re: "That boy sure is a runnin fool" - 2022 Running Thread

The running thread has gone dormant!

I've been running, I'm as slow as I ever have been and carrying 3-4 lbs more than I usually would be this time of year, but it's all good. I'm still out there five days a week getting my heart rate up and enjoying the seasons.

Ran 6.5 miles this morning to get me to 90 for December and 1102 for the year. Tacked on another 215 miles biked this year and 6.5 miles kayaked! That's a whole nother story, actually, my buddy Chris and I kayaked a 6+ mile stretch of the Onondaga Creek, from south of Syracuse right to the Inner Harbor area. That was a good workout too!

I need some softer, more cushiony shoes. I have been running in Hoka One One Mach 5's, but my current pair has 360 miles on them, and I found a cheap pair online (well, cheap relative, I mean, $90 for new running shoes), only they turned out to be Mach 4's and they're way less soft.

I'll be buying new ones tomorrow - my employer has added an annual $500 "wellness allowance" as a benefit, and I can use it towards running shoes among other things. I'll also be doing our local "Resolution Run," an annual fave of mine here in town, where we run a 4.5-ish mile route and then meet for beers and lunch at the Spaghetti Warehouse.

In case you're curious, too, I use statshunters.com as a better site to get collective Strava stats from, as Strava lacks some very basic statistics for non paying users.

Re: "That boy sure is a runnin fool" - 2022 Running Thread

I actually was cleared to start running again in October, provided I start gradually.

Basically running shouldn't make it worse, so why not?

I put in 41 miles in October, then 69 in November. And closed out the year with 91 for December. It's my 4th highest monthly mileage, since my injury streak took hold in april.

709 for the year.

I'm feeling pretty good, fitness-wise, and am back to building up my base. And hoping to keep that injury bug at bay.

Knee isnt 100%. I still “feel” it at times but running doesn't make it worse, nor does high mileage.

The knee was actually feeling great until I gave it a jolt in the driveway shooting hoops with the little guys. So I'm limiting that kind of thing. I've noticed that what really angers it is kneeling. Strange.

But I can run on it. I'm still hoping that I can eventually volleyball on it and, sufficiently braced, maybe this summer I can softball on it. Running is the priority though, and that seems to be fine.

I'm focused on building my base, and hoping that when the weather warms up I'll get some speed back. I've tested it in shorter bursts, just don't want it blow a hammy running in anger before I'm really ready.

For the new year I'm going to start out not intentionally going for a hundred mile month streak, but with an easy 90 this month, it'll probably happen anyways.

Mrs.mm is running a 550+ day running streak which is more impressive than my twelve year photo streak. I ain't doing that but I'm looking forward to a better ‘23.
