In an ironic twist to the Desert Island Mix Tape Tape challenge, you're in a plane crash but unlike Lynyrd Skynyrd's founders, you survive, only to wash up on a deserted island with nothin' but your boom box and a mix tape with 1 of these following songs on it. What'll it be? We're sticking to the FM hits of the 70s era here.

I wouldn't've bet that a survey of Skynyrd FM rawk rotation staples would add up to 14 cuts, but seeing is believing.

No love for The Ballad of Curtis Loew? That's a deeper cut I will admit...

I play "Tuesday's Gone" occasionally in my sets so I suppose I'd go with that one.

Yeah, but it's the same five songs played 14x/hr.

Which is why my D.I. choice will not be from the Southern Man/Free Bird/Gimme Three Steps/Sweet Home Alabama/What's Your Name grouping.

I think I'll echo FMan's choice of TUESDAY'S GONE

Unpopular opinion: I think Freebird is awful.

I was on the metal side when allegiances were formed in high school, with the metal people on one side and the Southern rockers on the other. When I say "metal," it was probably more like "Any kind of rock that is not Southern rock" vs. Southern rock.

For a year, it seemed like Charlie Daniels, Marshall Tucker, and Skynyrd took over my high school. Molly Hatchet and .38 Special were kind of in the middle but leaning south. For the record, there is nothing lamer than South Shore Long Island kids trying to say "y'all" with the Long Island accent. Equally lame, in hindsight, is me refusing to recognize or appreciate music outside of our stated and defended preferences. But high school sucked for a lot of reasons.

Anyway. "Freebird" represented everything we didn't like. I never really grew to like Skynyrd, though I appreciated the unabashed hometown loyalty stated in "Sweet Home Alabama." If it was "Sweet Home, Massapequa" I would have loved it.

Perfect!!!!

I actually worked in the Sunrise Mall. And we had to wear cowboy hats as part of our "ranch hand" uniforms at Roy Rogers. Did I mention high school sucked?

On one hand, we found so many silly ways to divide ourselves. On the other, how in the heck did Charlie Daniels sell out three nights at the Nassau Coliseum singing about how the South was gonna do it again?

It seemed like a short window. I think we mostly met in the middle the next year when someone discovered The Doors.

Skynyrd, and by extension, Free Bird, became much more popular after the plane crash, indeed, because of the plane crash.

It's like the old Hollywood maxim: Dying is a great career move.

They played several years in a row at the (now defunct) Candlewood Playhouse, about one mile from my house.

I never saw them even though my daughter worked part-time in the box office and we could have had primo tickets.

I didn't begin to appreciate their sound until much later.

Late pressings of Steet Survivors removed the fire from the photo-- telltale signal of a Columbia House late arriving poseur.

I recall the flames being removed because the album came out before

the death of course and it was a silly magazine/radio thing then people

were like if you want the real album you have to have the flames one.

No recollection of Columbia House poseur talk, but all we had was only

3-4 monthly magazines and cafeteria chit-chat.

No, only shit-kickin' southern rock for sunburned Long Island Caucasians:

  • [*]“The Night They Tour Ol' Nunley's Down”

  • [*]“Long Island Railroad Riders in the Sky” and, of course,

  • [*]"Freeport Bird" for the encore.

    From allmusic.com:

Gold & Platinum Review by Stephen Thomas Erlewine

Gold & Platinum was compiled by Gary Rossington and Allen Collins, the two surviving members of Lynyrd Skynyrd, after the band's tragic plane crash of 1977. Though many years have elapsed since its 1979 release, the double-record set remains the best, most concise compilation of the groundbreaking Southern rock band. Over the course of two albums, all of Skynyrd's hits -- "Sweet Home Alabama," "Free Bird," "Saturday Night Special," "What's Your Name," "You Got That Right" -- are featured, as well as essential album tracks like "That Smell," "Down South Jukin'," "Gimme Three Steps," "I Know a Little," and "Tuesday's Gone." Some great songs like "Workin' for MCA" are missing, and the four-disc box set may be more comprehensive, but it's hard to imagine a better, more concise greatest-hits collection than Gold & Platinum.

It's on one of their compilations because the song evokes tremendous sentimental memories to the surviving members about the band's earlier touring days and about their deceased bandmates. But there's no getting around that it's a basic bar blues song, generic, unimaginative and really uninspiring.

You have a tin ear. Years ago we had a thread here about how Led Zeppelin (and the Yardbirds) lifted Dazed and Confused from Jake Holmes. I remember that thread because I did the posting. I even posted a youtube link to Holmes's original recording. And you challenged it. Even though the lifting of that song would be obvious to any idiot once it was explained. But not you. Because you have a tin ear. Or because you just challenge just about everything I write. Or at least used to.
