Who should sponsor the Mets?

Johnny Lunchbucket
Mar 14 2022 08:12 AM

So as you know the CBA includes uni-advertisements for the first time. League says they are still going over details, and got from a well-placed source that the Mets haven't ordered any new patches--yet.

With the understanding that we all hate this for many reasons--primarily around the idea of aligning a brand over another brand for which we all have resilient affection--who would you hold and nose and like most as a sponsor? Could be any company or product except alcohol and sportsbooks, which I'm pretty sure are to be excluded.

Re: Who should sponsor the Mets?

It's so so rare to have a sponsor on a uniform that doesn't make you want to retch. I'd love to see the Metropolitan Museum of Art pony up to be the sponsor. If you could talk them into an alternate color scheme, this would be more than ok, I think. Even if it had to be red, I'm sure folks could live with something like this on breast patch:

https://hips.hearstapps.com/hmg-prod.s3.amazonaws.com/images/the-met-art-2-1623255995.jpg?crop=0.502xw:1.00xh;0,0&resize=640:*>

Aside from that, Citi comes to mind. JetBlue maybe? Or some other airline? But no one really wants to see those.

My long shot: KraneShares. They're a NY-based investment company whose CEO leads the ownership group of USL soccer team Queensboro FC. They've previously paid to have "KraneShares" on soccer kits before, but not sure if they have the buxxx to make the jump from second-tier soccer to MLB.

Love it, but I'd bet that's super unlikely. FC Barcelona famously eschewed large sponsorship money to put Unicef on the front of their kits. They actually paid Unicef every year and raised a ton of money for them. That (surprisingly) lasted a while, until FCB finally took a shitload of Euros from a Qatari company to be the sponsor.

On a probably related note: FCB is a terribly run organization from a financial standpoint.

Re: Who should sponsor the Mets?

Starting with things that would suck (or suck more than most):
•
Big Pharma

  •
Big Oil

  •
Oligarch-owned Middle East air carriers

  •
Cable or TV programming providers.
  •
I'm assuming they will stay miles away from any brand associated with President Trump, but considering Governor Christie is on the board, that assumption isn't as safe as all that.

Big sneaker would kind of suck, too, but it's too good a match to avoid, so it'd probably be something I'd have to get used to, and not all athletic apparel brands are equally evil. I'd kind of be surprised if Under Armor doesn't sign a 10-year deal with the O's.

For the Mets, I'm predicting a wacky insurance advertiser — likely GEICO or Progressive — but what I want is perhaps something already orange and/or blue, or based in the outer boroughs.
•
Penguin Books (Penguin Random House)

  •
Doubleday Books (Knopf Doubleday)

  •
Steinway & Sons

  •
Swingline Staplers

  •
White Rock Beverages

  •
Atavist

  •
Etsy

  •
Beyond Good.
  •
Re: Who should sponsor the Mets?

I think with Nike the maker's mark on all jerseys, big sneaker is probably unlikely as a sponsor. I hope it's not Big Pharma, but healthcare companies litter the American soccer jersey sponsor landscape.

Also with Cohen on board, I guess we shouldn't be surprised if some big-swinging investor outfit like Deloitte or Bear Stearns is the sponsor.

When FOX decided to get out of the regional cable sports business Disney was to be the original buyer. But that was negated when it was decided that all those regional

channels plus the ESPN monster would represent too much of a monopoly. So when that divesture was ordered 'Sinclair Broadcast Group' and 'Entertainment Studios'

became the co-owners of the regional chain of sports networks formerly known as FOX Sports [your area here]. Bally's, it turns out, jumped in as a naming rights partner,

something the buyers needed to alleviate debt taken on with the purchase and I'm sure Bally's wanted it for the growing gambling/sports connections.

15 MLB teams (plus a similar percentage of NBA & NHL teams) are broadcast locally by stations* owned and operated by this network while others have outlets that are affiliates.

    * not SNY, or YES, or NESN. MSG+ & MASN are affiliates

It always looked to me like a mid-century modern logo for a European national airline. Looking it up, I'm not that far off, as it was introduced in 1955.

What it represents — and I wouldn't have guessed this — is a highly stylized M. I think it looks more like a stylized bird's-eye view of someone's cleavage in a cone bra.

In the design biz, it's referred to as "the bat-wing logo," which probably pisses Batman off to no end.

Teams have now been moving the club sleeve logo to the player's non-dominant arm so it's always facing front when they're batting (right-handed hitters have the sponsor patch on their left arm and lefties vice-versa). Per Uniwatch:

To make matters worse, the positioning of the uniform ads will be non-uniform. In order to maximize TV exposure, some players will wear the ads on the left sleeve and others on the right, depending on whether they bat or pitch left-handed or right-handed. (Switch-hitters will apparently be issued two jerseys and wear the appropriate one based on the opposing team's starting pitcher.)

Are the Yankees the only fucking team out there that knows how to name its stadium and what to with these sponsored uni patches? Jeez. It's not even that it's ghastly, which it is. It's that they're proud to announce it. I get it that they're proud partners, and why wouldn't you be. I'm sure they do amazing work at NYP. But they should not be proud that someone smeared a red polygon of shit on their classic blue and orange jerseys. That's the travesty.

No doubt because a maximum size limit was put on these things (y'know, to keep them from looking gaudy and ugly) but, as often happens

in these deals, 'maximum' gets translated into 'minimum' so extra vertical space is needed to fill out the very horizontal looking logo.

Tying this back to soccer and their longstanding use of on-shirt sponsorships, I eyeballed my favorite league (USL Championship, second tier American soccer) and there are 8(!!!) health care companies as front-of-shirt sponsors. MLS (first tier of American soccer) has 7!

I checked the English Premier League and there are lots of airlines and online betting companies, but zero health care sponsors. Also zero in La Liga in Spain. Same goes for the Bundesliga in Germany and Ligue 1 in France, too. No health care sponsors in the top 4 soccer leagues in the world because heath care isn't the privatized, for-profit monster it tragically is in the US. Sickening is the pun I'm looking for.

But then what would happen when they switch from the center field camera to the behind-home-plate camera? That would screw up the viewers' view of the NYPresb patch.

Here's a solution. Instead of NYPersby patches, they could just hologram the NYPresby patch so that it's always seen on TV. Like those ads that TV viewers see but aren't really there. Of course, then fans attending the game in person won't see the hologramed patch. The solution for that is to make fans in attendance wear special glasses like the 3D movies glasses of the 50s -- only these stadium glasses would make the hologram visible and then the fans could see the patch too. It'd work for outfield wall ads too. Instead of real ads, the ads would be hologrammed. Then they could change ads coinstantly and teams could get more sponsors in there, too. And a sucky team like the Pirates, they could hologram their past star players to replace their current active players. A hologram of Willie Stargell blasting a tape-measure HR followed by a back-to-backer by Barry Bonds. I guess they could hologram the scoreboard to make up a winning score, too. The possibilities are endless.

Much better. It would be better if it wasn't there, but if it has to be, this is much better than the original.

    Not bad.

    Not too good, either.

    But not bad.

I'd have to see the size.

Exactly. Everybody's caught up in how it was made better without recognizing how awful it is from a baseline.

Presumably into perpetuity, we'll now be able to identify any relevant photos as definitively coming from April 2023.

    New patch > old patch.

It would be better if Presbyterian was spelled wrong, 'cause who

the fuck looks at the ad patch anyways after once or twice glances.

Who buys something because of baseball stadium ads? I don't.

I do like how Howie goes out of character and gets pumped up on Bigelow, "refuses to settle" when you know irl Hoeie would drink any tea that paid him.

I just like (and my wife totally cracks up at) the idea of it being August 8 and 104 degrees out and Howie can't wait to get to the ballpark to boil up a refreshing cup of hot tea.

Branding has become so stupidly ubiquitous in sports that people were actually livid when the STAPLES™ Center in LA was re-named because they allowed the brand to be synonymous with the Lakers like it was Magic Fucking Johnson Arena or something.
