Memories of Robert Gsellman

The Cubs can't get enough 2021 Mets: Stroman, Villar and now the hirsute Gsellman. Came through big down the Wild Card stretch in 2016. There was something with his shoulder where the only thing he could do with a bat was bunt and he somehow got a base hit anyway. Not a bad fill-in closer when Familia was hurt in 2017. Amiably goofy.

His last name was fun to say.

The Cubs jumped on Seiya Suzuki, too, who wasn't a Met, but was gaining some emotional traction in regions including the outlying areas of my house.

I never got a confirmation that 65 was for 65ELLMAN, but I'm sticking with that until I hear otherwise, even though he shed that number in 2021.

He won a Mets minor league award and Lunchie looked at his pitching line and lamented there weren't enough gstrikeouts.

The beard and the locks always kind of gave the impression that he was trying to be somebody else, even wearing a manbun at times, but he was good athlete and good pitcher when healthy. Pretty hittable when he wasn't 100%. A good eye as a batter, too, although that'll happen when the team won't let you swing for long periods of time.

In the winter following his big splash half-season debut there were more than a few prospect touts who were high on him, saying that he wasn't what just a flash in the pan,, that he had a nice future in front of him.

But then he didn't.

Do the Cubs realize we weren't all that good last year?

Re: Memories of Robert Gsellman

I remember how in 2016 he couldn't swing a bat and bunted at every pitch, but none of the other teams seemed to know that.

We saw his first MLB appearance in St. Louis and always had a thing for him. Always struck me as a guy who could probably get 30 saves for a second-division club

My adopted Met farmhand who made it to the big time. Probably five years ago when I was in Akron watching the B-Mets and the Ducks and explaining how to pronounce his name to the fans around me.

But sure, bring him back as a minor dude. Only a small sample size as a Cubbie has done him in. That and a big sample size with the weed.

Right, my first reaction was sign him to a minor league deal if possible.

Did youse know that Gsellman is pitching in Asia and that he's Trevor Bauer's teammate?
