Ed Coleman is retiring, reports Neil Best in Newsday (paywall). Bob “Mr. Met” Heussler, too. Eddie Coleman, the longtime Mets reporter and a WFAN original from the station's 1987 debut, has decided to retire. Coleman, 72, had been expected to call some games from the booth this season with Howie Rose cutting back for medical reasons, but instead he opted to move on. “It's been a great ride,” Coleman told Newsday on Friday, shortly after Newsday broke the news of his departure. “It's been more ups and downs than I care to think about with the Mets, that's for sure. “But I've loved the callers. I've loved the fans. The feedback that I got, I always got positive stuff from fans when we were on the road or even at Citi Field or Shea.” Brad Heller is expected to succeed Coleman as the pregame and postgame host for Mets games on WCBS-AM, which has the same parent company as WFAN in Audacy. The company still is considering candidates to fill in for Rose, who will skip West Coast games this season, and is focused on younger announcers for that role. Coleman's retirement is part of a wave of departures in recent years by WFAN fixtures. My prayers have been answered!! Of course, I've been beseeching the saints to spare me this moron's voice for quite a few decades now, but I'll take it. There is (was!!) no Mets bullshit he wouldn't eat up with a spoon, and ask for seconds.

I was always frustrated by Eddie C because he was just too "normal" to be a sports radio personality. My memories of him are absorbing all kinds of wildly misinformed questions from Francessa and answering them all--no matter how stupid-- with "You might be right about that, Mike..." or "You could have a point there..." or "That could certainly be the case..." I thought he good presence otherwise

Eddie always felt like a "company man," which others here have alluded to. He knows his stuff, has a great radio voice, and is certainly an icon to Mets fans who listen to the radio. His job was never to ask the hard questions, and he did it well. Thanks for the memories, Eddie C.

I hear that it isn't a custom jersey. Just an old Vince Coleman top they found laying around. I don't know. It's just what I heard.
