Ready, Sweat, Go! - Live in 2022

Do we have a thread for this yet in 2022?

I've probably mentioned in the past that there is a small 475-seat opera house in my town that is off the beaten path and usually promotes folk, choral and and traditional acts. In the past few years, they have been attracting more "mainstream" acts that are looking to perform solo or acoustically. Last fall, I got to see Bob Mould there doing his electric solo set.

I get to see two great songwriting women in three days coming up in May of this year. On May 2, I have tickets to see Aimee Mann and on May 4, I will be seeing Suzanne Vega.

Beautiful venue. Those should be a coupla great shows, too.

I bought a lot of concert tickets in my foolish optimism for the year, but we're oh-for-2022 so far, missing Clem Snide (at the height of omicron so we just stayed the hell home) and Sierra Ferrell a couple weeks ago (long drive, snowy roads, plus lingering COVID everywhere).

We've got José González at an 800-seat theatre next week and I'm *hoping* this one happens.

You should get tickets for one of those boxes in the upper left of that photo and go dressed as Abe Lincoln.

Re: Ready, Sweat, Go! - Live in 2022

Saw Robert Plant & Alison Krauss at Forest Hills Saturday night. A good show although it bogged a bit mid-set with too many mid-tempo numbers in a row but their band is really good and they seemed to enjoy being up there, especially Plant who seemed to revel in being in front of a large crowd once again. The audience particularly perked up when they did three Led Zeppelin songs: Rock & Roll, The Battle of Evermore and When the Levee Breaks (which LZ covered but still). Seems like the venue is slowly installing seats in the bleacher area though they were far more expensive than the backless sitting-on-cement spots. The seated area was not full so we snuck down for the last part of the show which we should have done earlier.

One of my facebaook pals was looking to move his tickets for this show the other day. I was like, "hmmm" then saw he paid $1,100 for the pair.

That's crazy talk.

All you damn old people are really paying sucker prices for old-people music, and raising the market for the other old people like me.

I paid around $90 for the cheap seats (which as I noted I upgraded). $1,100 is insane.

Re: Ready, Sweat, Go! - Live in 2022

Plant was never on the top of my list of R&R front men but I've come to admire the way he's steered away from becoming an oldies oct like so many of his contemporaries, doing decades old stuff over

and over again. He's even publicly stated on occasion that he thought LZ's stuff suffered from being over-played in the intervening years and can't even listen to 'Stairway' at this point of his life.

That said, I think it's kind of cool that he's dropping a few LZ songs into his shows. 'Rock and Roll' surprises me, but reworks of 'Levee' and 'Evermore' would seem to fit well into this current format.

Good to hear the seats are getting better. It's a cool venue but my back starts hurting just thinking about that grandstand

I think it's cool you got to see a legend! Seems like every day we lose another. I was glad to got to see the Who -- well, two of them -- before the shutdown.

Re: Ready, Sweat, Go! - Live in 2022

I got to see Plant in a much smaller venue with several others on stage, at least two of whom were also legendary. Tickets went for $50, I think, for what was a benefit.

Why should benefits in smaller venues with more marquee talent cost less than commercial shows in larger venues with less marquee talent? The market sense eludes me.

It's entirely possible what you attended was an outlier.

A lot of other information would be needed to compare, ex. How long ago was it? How long did Plant play? Who were the other artists? What was the venue? What was the benefit for? Etc.

Re: Ready, Sweat, Go! - Live in 2022

Our local outdoor venue still sells a $29.50 lawn seat, of which I'll be buying at least three for this upcoming season (the Doobie Brothers with Michael McDonald on June 19, Steely Dan on June 23, and Santana + Earth, Wind and Fire on August 17th). It's a beautiful venue overlooking Onondaga Lake and I've been to a dozen or more shows there since it opened. God bless the geriatric "pay the bills" tours - despite many of these bands missing key elements (Boston minus Brad Delp, Foreigner minus Lou Gramm, Steely Dan minus Walter Becker, etc.), spending less than $30 to hear live classic rock songs I love is always money well spent.

In years' past they've had a $20 lawn seat special, but apparently not this year. There was a $25 lawn seat special week in May that I totally missed in the hullabaloo of it being our moving week.

Re: Ready, Sweat, Go! - Live in 2022

Doobie Brothers with Michael McDonald were great. They definitely dove deeper into the late 70s/early 80s Doobie catalog for some choice yacht rock tunes. My buddy Bob and I got free upgrades from our lawn seats to the front section of the pavilion to help fill out some of the partial view seating, which was a nice perk also.

Everyone who takes a turn vocally in this band can still hit the notes, which is always a strong barometer.

Nice. Still Doobin' after all these years.

What was probably the last chance I will ever have to see Midnight Oil came and went last night as their U.S. tour, surely their last, had the bad fortune of being scheduled in NYC on Father's Day. As our friend smg will attest-- I met him irl only once at their last visit a few years ago--they are an exciting live band who remind you of their great body of work live, but almost certainly are done after this.

If you ever get the chance to see Colin Hay of Men at Work fame, do it, he's wonderful. He's damn near as polished a joke and storyteller as he is a performer. Such a good night out (sitting in seats, at a show that started at 8).

I know I'm getting older and all that, but I still buy tickets for these indie acts I love (Snail Mail and Waxahatchee were the last two) but hitting the stage at 9:45 (after the opener) for a midweek set just doesn't align with my personal constitution anymore. RIP old me.

Hay has been spotted of late touring with a Men at Work lineup. I imagine that he and Greg Ham would be the only vets from the MaW lineup that conquered the world, but that's how they're billing it.

Re: Ready, Sweat, Go! - Live in 2022

I heard Hay announce sometime last year that he would be, in effect, Men At Work [Man? At Work], following in the wake of Donald 'I am Steely Dan' Fagen, and Jeff 'just call me ELO' Lynne in the man-as-band trend.

This despite the fact that Hay admitted that his break from MaW wasn't a friendly one.

I may have to take my old man self out for a night on the town. Japanese Breakfast (a.k.a. Michelle Zauner, who threw out the first pitch at a Mets game last month) and Yo La Tengo (who are named after a Mets anecdote) are on a bill together later this summer.

I was going to go as well but had a conflict too. The 2017 show was great, though.

I went out of my way to see Tears for Fears, touring for what seems like the first time in forever, because I'd missed all previous opportunities to see them. New album was solid and they play a lot of it on tour.

Definitely, more a variety of sounds, in comparison to the previous two times I have seen them in their McDonald-free configuration and they lean heavier into the early/mid 70s catalog. As for me personally, as I enjoy both eras equally, it was a great contrast of song styles.

I tend to forget there's a Doobie version of "You Belong to Me" for years at a time, and then I hear the Doobie version on the radio and it's SO McDonald-y.

Re: Ready, Sweat, Go! - Live in 2022

Saw Roxy Music and St. Vincent at MSG last night.

St. Vincent killed it. I'd seen her before fronting a quartet but last night there were backup singers, a dancer who appeared a couple of times and a show geared to the size of the venue. Many in the audience didn't know how to respond but I loved it.

This was Roxy Music's 50th anniversary tour. I saw them as a lad opening for the Steve Miller Band 49 years ago back when Brian Eno was in the group. Last night featured the original band minus the bass player and with lots of others on-stage (a 13 piece band) performed a good show. I have to say that I so much prefer the early loopy Roxy Music sound to the smooth Avalon period but I was clearly in the minority last night, however, there was enough for both camps to enjoy and just hearing Phil Manzanera play guitar is a joy. Brian Ferry can't hit the high notes anymore and relied on backup singers quite a bit but he is 70-something.

Re: Ready, Sweat, Go! - Live in 2022

My friend saw Roxy's DC show that immediately preceded your'n, and he got his hands on the setlist, and I have to congratulate them on having the most controlled setlist I've ever seen, including each song, the key, the beats-per-minute, and they exact time they each were supposed to last, down to the second.

By contrast, another friend (who was also at your Roxy Music MSG show) just saw Van Morrison and he walked off stage in the middle of "Gloria" without saying goodnight, and the band played on for five more minutes and the lights came up.

You'll probably be unsurprised to learn that "Do the Strand" is their fastest song, but taking just the bridge, "In Every Dream Home" is faster.

Do The Strand is maybe my favorite Roxy Music song but last night it didn't pop. Brian Ferry couldn't really sing it with the same brio as on the recording.
