If the Mets weren't going well, I'd worry Buck can't settle on a lineup.

Because the Mets are going well, I'm delighted Buck is showing so much flexibility with his personnel.

Also delightful: this thread's title.

Turns out Lefty Jr went to the game and was just to the left of the bullpen with a great view of Lindor's home run. He's in the clip from SNY standing up in a white jersey 3 rows back as the ball soars by.

These comments are all of a piece, in that it seems so hard to find a manager who keeps his foot on the gas. I guess there's an argument for a responsible manager using early games to coddle a big hitter's ego, and working in the back end of the bullpen even when the game is tight, but that argument doesn't do any good when both choices burn you.

Of course, no manager kept his foot on the gas like Willie Randolph, and he just blew out his engine by the end of the season. Jerry did too. But it can't be that hard to find a happy medium between using your "eighth-inning guy" every day until his arm falls off on one hand, and working in your backenders in the tightest of spots when the frontenders should still be fresh. A sweep could have gone a long way toward taking Washington out early.

In fairness to Trevor Williams, he wound up facing seven hitters and the worst marks against him were two ground ball singles. I was sure off the bat that the Cruz bouncer which

produced the final two runs was going to be the end of the inning with the game merely tied, but the IF was shifted just enough to the pull side to put it out of Lindor's reach.

In between is where it got ugly, mainly that he got three grounders (one a bunt) to 1B which should have produced three outs, could even have produced four, but instead netted

just one.

The killer inning on the other side was the 7th: 1st & 2nd w/none out and the top of the order up (Nimmo, Lindor, Cano) and the result was K, FO, K with both Ks on three pitches.

Yeah, the problem wasn't really Williams. Crisp defense and it's a whole different inning.
