IGT — 4/29/2022, PHA@NYM, Stop at Third and 43

Edgy MD
Apr 27 2022 10:22 PM

The Mets get a day for any of their numerous hit batsmen to rest their bruises, and get penicillin injections for anyone exposed to Stubby Clapp, before taking the field at home against the incoming Phillies.

Tylor Megill defends against incoming assault from Aaron NewOrleansLouisiana. Phils are tied for third while fattening up against the Rockies. Bryce Harper has been DHing to rest a strained elbow. He's been playing catch, so keep an eye out for updates on him.

With Mickey Moniak still out since the end of Spring Training, the Phils are leading with Schwarber, Matt Vierling, and Nick Castellanos left to right, and Vierling has yet to hit much at all, despite a strong showing in an abbreviated stint as a rook in 2021.

Odubel Herrera, recently activated after a rehab stint, is trying to punch his way back into the lineup.

Mets will staple multiple wins together and leave the Phillies in need of a prescription for pain medication — take that to the bank.

I think there are also a couple of daytime lunch-to-go eateries.

Third and 43 are where Ace Frehley "exits to the night" in "Back in the New York Groove." It's a goofy-but-iconic lyric because the Midtown East location was no more exciting or associated with New York nightlife when Ace Frehley first sang it than it is today.

But, as the Mets tend to play "Back in the New York Groove" if and when they win the first game of a homestand, it's goofy lyric that I long to hear.

Same. I tried climbing a phone pole when I was six, got a huge splinter under my middle finger (still have the scar) so I saw the doctor, supposedly, and got a penicillin shot that gave me a bad reaction, and I've been telling people for the past half-century "Penicillin" when they as about allergies, though I don't remember any of this, just a story (and as scar) I've been told about.

"What was the bad reaction, exactly?"

"I was six, and out of my kug with fever, probably, how the hell would I know?"

i recall getting bloody noses whenever i had taken 'cillin as a yoot. was never told i was allergic, and never had problems as an adult. i also never, to my knowledge, developed spots.

Let it trigger my regular animus for the stands jutting toward the foul line in the outfield. I hate that crap. It's so Yankee Stadium. A ball over the bag and down the line should bounce around the corner.

This is delightfully old-fashioned sports journalism.

yeah, seriously. the beltran foul ball always felt like a little bit of an asterisk. i mean, i'm still going to celebrate it and love johan even more than i already did, but still.

on the other hand, a combined nono somehow seems like less of an accomplishment, despite i being more rare and perhaps more improbable.

whatever. i really don't care either way. both were great! glad we finished watching the latest moon knight in time for the 8th. oh, what a thing to behold!

Just a great night at the park. Crowd didn't really seem to be aware of it until the 7th when Rodriguez got the double play. But they got it in the 8th and 9th and it was a great atmosphere.

Nimmo's catch was very impressive to the naked eye.

McNeil's single was HUGE but Canha's double set it up first, also to huge appreciation from the crowd.

Alonso was PUMPED after his home run.

Drew Smith is firmly entrenched within the bullpen circle of trust.

Good to see Buck try to keep the no-no by putting in Smith and Jankowski for defense in the 9th.

Diaz was *something* last night. Even he said post-game that he was filthy. If he's pitching like that, he's unhittable.

This team is magic, friends.

It's tough. Newsday objectively has the strongest, most arresting layout, but it doesn't really feature the principals, and in that sense, isn't really telling the story very strongly.

Subject to change come TCD time, but I lean Post here for capturing the specific sense of occasion. The News's looks like a mockup produced for use in 1994's The Paper. Newsday, as it often does, tiptoes around the point.

PARTY OF FIVE also gives us a 90s reference, which is at least 20 years younger than most back-page headline references.

I also like the Post cover, even if it's photoshopped. No other way to get all five pitchers in one shot. But I don't know how youse can rate the other ones. All I can see is the top half of one and the bottom half of another one. Reminds me of miscut baseball cards.

Remove the hubbub about the no-hitter and it's still a 3-0 win against the Phillies while they were throwing Aaron Nola.

That has to be something considerably more than minimally impressive, no?

But this is not a no hitter as we were raised to think of one!

When I first read this thread and saw you guys were talking about this, the first thing I did was go to a box score and when I saw five pitchers I was flummoxed.

That's not very exciting.

Re: IGT — 4/29/2022, PHA@NYM, Stop at Third and 43

I think it was a better game than the Santana one in lots of ways. The while specter of the no no-hitter thing draped that whole game, and made it all about moving heaven and earth to check a box, to Santana's ultimate detriment. And everyone knew they blew the call on Beltran.

This was just better

Ask yourselves what would your dads or moms think of a five pitcher game? Let alone one that was ‘celebrated'.

They'd snort out their beer

For the 17th time in THE HISTORY OF BASEBALL a bunch of pitchers

combined for a no hitter. And they did it throwing like 160 pitches with no

one getting a hit. 154 or something. That's off-the-charts crazy in itself.

Screw ma and pa, what happened is certainly worth talking about some.

It's not like we're throwing them a ticker tape parade.

My dad would have enjoyed the life out of it.

He wasn't the biggest baseball fan, but he really dug riding a narrative, and this game had lots of 'em.

Diaz' sliders in the ninth were unworldy. I realize he's grossly consistent, but when that slider is dancing like that it's like watching peak Lawrence Taylor or Michael Jordan. It's just unfair. It's a man playing with boys.

It was awesome. Fboy and I listened to the last several innings with baited breath. We hugged when it ended.

We watched not a moment of it.

There were two coincidences at play here in my own personal life that I found noteworthy. For the second time, I enjoyed Howie Rose with the radio call. Despite the fact that I absorb most Mets content visually, in 2012 I was at a poker game and listening to Johan's performance on XM.

This past weekend we moved, and had no FIOS, because Verizon fucked the install scheduling up royally (I still don't have Internet at home yet). So once again, it was a radio call for me.

It reminded me of another momentous game, the June 30, 2000 Mets v Braves game, where the Mets came from down 8-2 to win on the Mike Piazza home run. I missed that one entirely, also, as it also happened on a day I moved. Another coincidence.
