Man, lookit the $$ that's out there to be made touring if you're a legacy act that can still haul your carcasses onto the stage. That venue looks like its holding half the country.

Even 2002 Aerosmith doing 1970s Aerosmith is gold.

Aerosmith and The Eagles are the greatest classic rock bands? (rolls eyes). Wouldn't make my top 30. Jeez, all that's missing here is for the other guy to chime in and add Kiss and Switchfoot to this conversation, whoever the hell Switchfoot is. Did I suddenly get transported to some bizarre alternate universe of bad taste? With KC as the DJ, it's likely.

Oh, come on. Even if you don't put them at the top, to say that Aerosmith and the Eagles aren't even top THIRTY means you're not even on the same planet.

In Taijuan's defense, Since Tai joined the Mets, Schwarber's only 4 for 8 with 4 home runs off him. (Sigh.) Also, Schwarber is entering serious all-time "I hate that guy" territory.

The first five Dream-Ruts were staples for me. Bought the Perryless-

Not in any particular order:

The Beatles

The Rolling Stones

Led Zeppelin

The Who

Pink Floyd

The Allman Brothers

Traffic

Cream

Blind Faith

Derek & The Dominoes

Jeff Beck Group with Rod Stewart

The Yardbirds

Jethro Tull

Creedence Clearwater Revival

The Doors

Big Brother & The Holding Co. with Janis Joplin

Simon & Garfunkel

The Jimi Hendrix Experience

Bob Dylan

The Kinks

The Band

Jefferson Airplane

Buffalo Springfield

The Byrds

Crosby, Stills and Nash (and Young, too)

Neil Young

Sly & the Family Stone

The Monkees

Blood, Sweat & Tears

Donovan

I made this list in less than four minutes. And I barely had to crack 1968. And I left out the whole Motown stable, which I love and got regular airplay on the classic rock radio stations I grew up listening to, and were all mostly active in 1968.

I take it back. Those two bands wouldn't make my top 75!

Re: IGT 05/05 - Mets at Phils - Back in the Saddle Again

While many of the bands in batmagadanleadoff's list are not from the United States, I'd agree that there are a ton of US classic rock bands I'd enjoy listening to more than Aerosmith (who I'm "meh" on) and the Eagles (who I despise).

Re: IGT 05/05 - Mets at Phils - Back in the Saddle Again

Yeah, I think bml missed fman's "American" qualifier, as well as the "band" thing. Soul acts, much more egregiously, got broadly and aggressively weeded out as the AOR format faded and "Classic Rock" was born. The playlists of stations identifying as ascribing to the "classic rock" format are incredibly, incredibly white. Once you get past Hendrix and Jaimoe, finding the next most frequently appearing black artist who is an official member of the act is a long, sick, sad slog.

I think Fuck the Eagles is something that we all can agree on. That and the desire for glorious Mets victory this evening.

Re: IGT 05/05 - Mets at Phils - Back in the Saddle Again

Completely agree with Willets Point and batmag on the relative worth of Aerosmith and the Eagles. Only about 11 or 12 on Batmag's list are both American and groups (as opposed to solo acts) and some might not quite be in the "classic rock" genre (Monkees don't get a lot of airplay on classic rock stations).

I think Aerosmith are great, but they benefit a bunch from narrow category drawing here. Are they that great, or is it that bands from the “classic rock” era are predominantly British (versus solo artists, such as a Dylan or Springsteen)?

What about the “ ____ and _____” artists? Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers might also have a very good claim as the top American artist of the classic rock era.

Re: IGT 05/05 - Mets at Phils - Back in the Saddle Again

Fuck the Eagles.

I like Joe Perry but Aerosmith lacks any originality. They're not innovative or groundbreaking in any way at all. Steve Tyler is a total Mick Jagger knock-off and the band comes off as a weak, limited Led Zeppelin wannabe. And that's before MTV came along, when Aerosmith then morphed into the ultimate cheeseball commercial money-grubbing schlockmeisters.

The best? Please.

You missed the qualifier there. Nearly all of those bands are made up of folks who are not from the USA. I do put the Allmans, the Doors and CCR in that same rare air, among American bands. And ironically, despite the fact that the Band is often credited with inventing the "Americana" sound, only Levon Helm of that group was not Canadian.

And, yes, naturally, fuck the Eagles with a giant iron stick.

The Allman Brothers

Creedence Clearwater Revival

The Doors

Big Brother & The Holding Co. with Janis Joplin

Simon & Garfunkel

Bob Dylan

Jefferson Airplane

Sly & the Family Stone

Blood, Sweat & Tears

So, from this batch, yeah, I put peak 1970s Aerosmith up against all of them, sure. Like KC, I can still listen to selections from the 2 radio friendly albums in the 80's, there are some good riffs in those records.

Its a band. A great one. What? Lenny Kravitz's band isnt a band because its named after Lenny Kravitz but Fleetwood Mac is a band because its named after more than one of its members? What the hell does the band name have to do with anything?

Getting a bit into semantics here but I wouldn't call Dylan a band because his stuff was with so many different musicians over the years. Springsteen, OTOH, even though technically billed as a solo act, has made the vast majority of his output with a remarkably stable backing unit for over half a century.

Aerosmith was my third concert. We met Jimmy Crespo, who replaced Perry, at an in-store appearance in a stereo store. It was not well publicized, and I bet there were only two or three people there besides me and my two buddies. He was not pleased, but it did stay for a little bit and signed my copy of Night in the Ruts, which he ghost-played on for a song. I did see that "Rock in a Hard Place" tour. Had to go all the way to the Meadowlands, which was quite the adventure at the time.

So no one's allowed to have Blind Faith or Derek & the Dominoes or the Traveling Wilburys as their favorite band because those bands only put out one studio album? Because if I have permission, put me down for the band that recorded Dylan's Bringing it all Back Home as one of my favorite bands.

MLB.tv was glitchy all night. I finally tuned in for the bottom of the ninth and WOW.

I just re-watched the rally (after several glitches kept resetting the game). It seemed like three balls went just over Alex Bohm's glove. The Phils should have had Charles Barkley playing third.

Also, Odubel Herrera seemed to quit in his last few steps on Marte's go-ahead hit. I realize that diving for a ball that's about to hit off the base of the wall is a good way to break your neck, but he seemed defeated out there.

Keep Herrera in your lineup, Philly.

I was out with the family this evening. When I came home, I rushed to my computer to stream the game. Already down 5-0 to the Phillies in the 3rd innning. Meanwhile, the Crane Pool IGT was busy arguing over the Aerosmith's place in the pantheon of classic rock bands. Sometime in the 4th or 5th inning with the Phillies up 7-0 I decided it was a good night to have a beer and catch up on some reading. Came in a short while ago preparing to go to bed early. Decided to check the score before calling it a night and couldn't believe my eyes. Now I'm too stoked to go to sleep.

Inspiring win for the Mets and a soul crushing defeat for the Phillies. I feel so unworthy, as a result of my lack of faith.

Re: IGT 05/05 - Mets at Phils - Back in the Saddle Again

Great game story in the Philadelphia Inquirer this morning. I always try and think how I'd handle these kinds of stories which test your ability to present uncomfortable truths. Scott Lauber is the writer.

The forecast is calling for rain Friday. But on a clear, cool Thursday night, the sky fell on the Phillies.

Leading by four runs after the first inning, seven runs after the fourth, and six runs with three outs to go in what should've been a series-opening giggler against the division-leading New York Mets, the Phillies lost — yes, somehow they lost — 8-7 before an announced crowd of 24,040 stunned patrons at Citizens Bank Park.

How it happened is almost secondary to the fact that it actually happened. But James Norwood and closer Corey Knebel combined to allow seven runs in the ninth inning — four of which scored with two outs — in a loss that had to be seen to be believed.

Even then, it strained credulity. Consider this: Phillies manager Joe Girardi, who managed a Game 7 loss in the 2017 American League Championship Series that preceded his firing by the New York Yankees, called it “about as hard [a loss] as I've been through.”

“Shouldn't have happened,” Knebel said after giving up three two-out hits in a row, including Brandon Nimmo's game-tying two-run single and Starling Marte's go-ahead double that split the gap in left-center. “Got to be better. Offense did their job tonight. [Aaron] Nola, awesome outing. The game's on me. We've got a seven-run lead, six-run lead going into the ninth. It can't happen.”

God, I love a game story.

I like that after curve that made Smith look really, really bad striking out for the second out, Nimmo lined a curve that was just as sharp into center. His just had more plate, but it was really breaking when he squared it up.

They all played way too much Eagles for me and I don't even dislike them. It's

true that Aersosmith got very little airplay in the tri-state area. It was a story or
