Series in Review: NYM@PHI, 5/5-5/8

In what was supposed to be a four-game set, Mets take two of three against a Phillie team that isn't really seemingly like a contender, on one hand. On the other hand, when the Covid list claims both Zack Wheeler and Zach Elvin, the Mets clearly weren't seeing the Phils at phull strength.

On the pitching side, the Mets got two sketchy starts, including the first loss for Max Scherzer in forever. But he hung in there and gave them length. How much the weather played into that is a question. The relievers kept them in games until they could strike late, and the huge comeback win, Edwin Diaz was as impressive as ever.

The batsmen saw a big series for righthanded hitters like Marte and Alonso, with the biggest hit from J.D. Davis. Lefties like Smith and McNeil didn't do so hot. And Lindor made some good contact but it didn't always pay off.

After the huge comeback win, the only think that could have dampened their momentum would have been a Sunday sweep, so a split with the Mets taking the getaway game was probably the next-best outcome. The Mets are now 5-1 in double-header games.

Baserunning could have been stronger, and the defense tighter, but they stayed in every game, and after the poor start on Thursday, they recovered from most of their setbacks with aplomb.

They also released Robinson CanĂ³. Plus, Fman and family settled into their new house

Player of the series is ... Marte, right?

Enjoyed game 2 yesterday more than game 1. Wasn't IGT'ing it because we were and are continuing to try and get unpacked and settled in. The new house is great and better yet, my wife and I switched TVs based on the new layout, and now I have a 65" screen mounted on the wall from which I can keep tabs on the Metsies.

Little concerned about Escobar

Can you elab?

I'm concerned that Smitty isn't going to get enough PT to find his stroke, and is going to look ugly at times until he does. He almost ruined that comeback, man.

I'm concerned that Megill and Scherzer showing they are human may force me to temper expectations when they pitch. That's reasonable, though I hate it so.

I'm concerned that it took a Covid outbreak and emergency Philadelphia starters for the Mets to take this series.

Well, they're not going to score 7 runs in the 9th every night. If they score only 5, then we're talking about a 'Mets are finally coming back to earth' moment.

This season so far is eerily paralleling 2021. Off to a good start and everyone else in the division is scuffling below .500. Megill, while good so far, is bound to hit a wall at some point. Carrasco is a box of chocolates. So is Walker. DeGrom is off in some hazy future somewhere.

They're not really hitting for power. Even Alonso is a tick below par; singles to right-center aren't why he gets to do CarShield commercials. Hoping they break out when the weather warms, but it's a concern.

Escobar was oh for the Phillies and 2 for his last 23. JDD in the meantime is smashing it into hard luck.

I'm not concerned about any one player just yet. It's early. The guys who have sucked the most have found the IL or a ticket out of town, which is how it should be.

In more dickish news, I saw a guy wearing a Phillies shirt at the Syracuse Mets game this past Saturday and asked him which hurt his feelings more - the no hitter or the 6 run comeback. He replied the latter. He seemed pretty genial about it, but this was also on my way out of the stadium and with a head full of sweet, sweet Saranac brewery products.

including the first loss for Max Scherzer in forever.

not saying that they didn't work well together (I didn't see the game, just going by the fact that Max hadn't lost in awhile)...but this was the first Mad Max start in 2022 that didn't see Nido as his personal catcher...likely was due to the DH (veteran gets the first game, backup gets the second game), but I wonder if Nido will go back to catching Max in the next game.

Interesting. The whole "we're not gonna have a personal catcher" argument has a little less heft if he sucks rocks every time he pitches to McCann, as he did yesterday.
