IGT 5/13/2022: SEA@NYM — Strangers in a Strange Land

The hopefully discombobulated Mariners make their first-ever visit to Citi Field, where, for all they know, Max Scherzer has always pitched for the home team. Lefty Marco Gonzales goes for the squad from that other Washington.



Jay Bruce is no longer with Seattle, thus eliminating all intrigue from the trade these opponents made several years ago.

There was this snarky (really nasty) anti- Mets/ Mariners fan poster on another baseball board many years ago.

For that reason, my opinion of the Mariners is somewhere between how I feel about the MFYs and the Braves.

Payback's a bi**h.

This is the 14th (!) season Citi Field has been open. There's no clearer example of how stupid the scheduling has been that there could be a team that still hasn't visited.

The whole "not losing a series" thing is great, but I really want to see a sweep. Followed by another sweep. Leading into a double digit win streak that sets the Mets apart from the rest of the league for the rest of the season.

The Mariners were due at Citi Field in 2020 until the pandemic had other ideas. Still a long time.



I noticed the Orioles' visit to Busch Stadium this week was their first, and that joint opened in 2006

2008 was an AL West year, and the Mariners visited (not the best series for the Mets, as I recall).



The real schedule curiosity was in 2011, an NL East-vs-AL West year. Although the Mets played Anaheim, Oakland, and Texas, they inexplicably also had a 3 game series in, of all places, Detroit - which is when they should have made a return visit to Seattle.



Then, again for reasons passing understanding, when the AL West was on the schedule in 2014 and 2017, the Mets played in Seattle both times. (The 2017 series should have been at Citi Field, but was not).

The transfer of the Astros to the AL was intended, at least in a byproduct way, to codify the Interleague scheduling. The Mariners missing in Flushing since Shea (I was there for Felix Hernandez's grand slam off Johan) replaced, at least for me, the mystery of why the White Sox never visited either of our ballparks clear to 2013. And we went from 2004 until 2019 without seeing Cleveland in these parts.



Next year, as everybody plays everybody, these charming/vexing quirks appear ready to fall away. Then again, it's MLB. They'll think of something.

My guess is if you polled 100 people outside of the stadium maybe four would

know who he is and two might guess he was the bass player for that Indie band

Many Met fans know Kelenic's name, but I thought Gary was way overselling the 'drama' of having him in a stadium he never played in and against a franchise where he never even reached full season A ball
