I've been waiting for weeks for my grocery store to get black and white cookies again.

For some reason associate them with New York

Why?

They are commonly associated with New York, and mostly unknown outside of the Northeast. Their origins (at least in the US) are traditionally traced to Glaser's Bakery on the Upper East Side.

They have frequently appeared in The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, which is frequently set on the UES.

So they're not half moon cookies? I grew up calling them black & whites also but upstate they are half moons.

Ostrovitsky's on Avenue J is the best bakery - I didn't see them on their website which is strange, they generally carry Black & White and also Blue or Pink and White (which is basically more white with food coloring for those who arent chocolate fans)

Half moons to me are something else entirely - a butter cookie shaped like a crescent moon covered on one side in chocolate

I grew up on the UES and dated a girl all through HS only because she worked at Glasers and could get me free pastries, including giant BW cookies. #sorrynotsorry

When someone gave me one one as a kid, I would break it in half and give the chocolate half to my friend. He liked chocolate, I liked vanilla.
