TWiB Notes - May 30 thru June 5

Frayed Knot
May 30 2022 05:02 PM

Giants at Phils. SFG goes up 3-2 on a 2-out 9th inning solo HR from Longoria off Knebel. (Phils had led 2-0 until a 7th inning 2R HR by Wilmer tied it)

Next batter Luis Gonzalez (no, not that one) singles on a 2-1 pitch. Knebel immediately tries to pick him off; he's safe but Philly challenges. They lose ... as they should have.

Two pitches later, (plus several more pickoff attempts) Gonzalez tries to steal. He's called out so now it's SF's turn to challenge. Also denied (as it should be) Top-9 now over.

So the second pitch of Bottom 9 is hit for a game tying HR from Schwarber and it's tied up again. And now Kapler is out to make a pitching change.

My point in all this (aside from humiliating the Phils for being one strike shy of a victory)?

That even though neither replay lasted very long (by replay standards), the gap between Longoria crossing the plate and the first pitch of bottom 9 was a bit over 10 minutes

during which time four pitches were thrown!! Throw in the two pitches to Schwarber which in turn led to the pitching change and now you're up to more than 13 minutes

to see six pitches thrown.

What should be the most exciting part of the game instead had a ridiculous non-action to action ratio.

They're into the 10th now.

Really Noah, you gotta pick Today to suck!

Syndergaard has given up 5 runs on six hits (incl. a HR and 3 2Bs) over the first two innings in da Bronx.

Also, Judge stole a HR from Ohtani.

Some late night scores of interest:

-- Phils lose to Giants in 11

This game was actually in Philly but took nearly 5 hours to play so it may as well have been out west

-- Braves lose in Arizona in 10 after leading most of the game

-- Marlins postponed in Colorado

-- Dodgers lose 2nd straight to Pittsburgh

That's terrific.

Tommy Pham (and really, shouldn't he be exclusively referred to as "Tommy PHWAM!" at this point?) has served his three-game suspension, and has jokingly blamed the smacking incident on Commissioner Mike Trout's lax supervision.

Footage has surfaced of the slap, and while it's merely a background detail in the shot, I'd conclude that Phwam!'s hands are a lot quicker than Will Smith's.

Don't know if this was mentioned during today's game but the Mets 10.5 game divisional first place lead is the largest in NL history for June 1st.

Ohtani suxx. There, I said it.

In two career games against the Yanx (a couple years ago and just this afternoon) he's combined to serve up 11 Runs on 15 Hits, including 4 HRs & 5 BBs, in a combined 3-2/3 innings.

But at least he has that special rule made just for him that when he exits the game he gets to remain as DH. That at least allowed him to get on base ... and promptly get picked off

while down by six runs!!
, y'know, the runs you gave up.

6-0 Yanx (4 solo HRs) with the game in the midst of their usual 10-minute* long 7th inning stretch.

Fuck you and I hope we kick your ass next week**!!

* truthfully clocked in at right around 4:00, which is still double what should be permitted. But George Steinbrenner liked to pretend he invented patriotism so a daily dog and pony

show is for some reason allowed to ensue during each home game in the Bronx

Called this one even before I knew it was a thing. Phils just looked like a team whose manager was going to get fired, even if it wasn't all his fault, or even any of his fault--tho I'm sure he had some.

Re: TWiB Notes - May 30 thru June 5

Joe Girardi, who was fired by the #Phillies, said on MLB Network Radio he still "prays that they get better, and they get to the playoffs."

Is this literally true? Does Girardi get down on his knees and then clasp his hands together and then concentrate real hard that the Phils make the playoffs? Does he have conversations with himself inside of his head where he says or thinks to himself that the Phils hopefully make the playoffs? What exactly goes on here?

A little help

Is it any different than wishing a company or business that fired you to still prosper because you understand the firing was strictly business and there is no reason to hold a grudge or burn the bridge of good relationships with people still employed there?

Especially if you'd like to lean on those people for references and recommendations?

Why do you care about the phrasing so much? Could it be just as simple as Girardi letting a belief structure show a little bit in his way of saying “I'm not harboring any ill will towards the Phillie organization.”

I dunno. I think it's because words have precise meanings and , I dunno again, how else am I gonna know what a person's telling me without paying attention to the words he's using? What if we went to a Mets game together me and you, and at the game, you asked me to get you a Diet Pepsi and instead I got you a hot dog with no mustard or ketchup and no bun, just the piece of hot dog meat, and then when you asked me why I didn't get you the Diet Pepsi you asked for, I replied that I wasnt paying attention to your phrasing so how am I supposed to know what you wanted?

Then what?

Girardi is a person of faith, and speaks openly about being a person of faith and why it is important to him. If he says he is praying for his now former players, some of whom I assume he has grown close to, then I don't have a reason to doubt him.

Re: TWiB Notes - May 30 thru June 5

The key takeaway here is that Joe Girardi has been fired. The Phils are sort of in turnaround. And the Mets have completed most of their season against them.

You never want to assume the door has closed on an opponent, but announcing that Rob Thompson will be the interim manager for the remainder of the season wouldn't be encouraging to me if I'm a Phillies' fan.

Phils respond to Girardi's canning by thrashing the Angels Ten - Zip ... but everyone thrashes the Angels lately (9 straight losses)

Marcus Stroman has pitched well for the Cubs recently ... but got thumped by the Cards to the tune of 9 ER allowed in 4 innings.

I figured I'd take the cue from Bucket and stopped responding.

Your scenario is not the same at all. The scenario where someone uses a non-secular phrase of prayer to describe sentiments usually reserved for “yeah, I don't harbor too much ill will and I wish them well the rest of the season” statements is more akin to you showing up with another brand of diet cola beverage, not something entirely different!

How do you not see that?

Re: TWiB Notes - May 30 thru June 5

This week ended with lots of broomage, much of it in our own division:

Yanx swept the Tiggers

Boston swept Oakland

Braves swept the Rox

Phils swept the Angels

Padres swept Milwaukee

And while the Nats didn't technically sweep the Reds, they did take three straight after dropping the first in a four game set

The A's are the victims of back to back series sweeps.

The Angels, now losers of 11 straight, were swept back-to-back-to-back (TOR x 4, Yanx x 3, Phils x3, plus a loss to Texas to start the streak)

The Angels/Phils on Sunday to extend that LAA losing streak was ridiculous.

Anaheim led 5-0, 6-2, and 7-6, losing those last two leads on a 2-out 8th inning Grand Slam (Harper) and then a 2-out / 9th inning / full count / 3R walk-off HR (Stott)

The Angels were a quite respectable 10 games over .500 12 days ago and looked like at least a potential contender for division supremacy. Now they're a game below ... and sinking fast.

Not coincidentally, Trout is sitting on an 0h-fer-27 at the moment (w/2 BB & 10 K). His last safety was a 5th inning double on May 27th, the 3rd game of the losing streak.

Re: TWiB Notes - May 30 thru June 5

It helps you appreciate the grit that got the Mets through the last two days.

A punch in the face from reality is waiting for everybody. The ones who take that punch and keep their feet, or keep going forward, are the survivors. But Anaheim and the Mets were in a similar place two weeks back and as sobering as it is to see a peer fall, it's gratifying to remain on the move following this series.

Trying not to feel good in seeing Stroman and Syndergaard take the pricks. That's no way to be cool. But man.
