Is it possible the Mets have such a potent offense they can win it without Jake or Max?

Possibly, certainly. But, also certainly, less likely than it is that they pull it off with both of those.

Nats swapping out their righthanders for lefties. Mets doing the opposite.

Update yesterday was that as the Mets have kept rolling, no need to rush him back. No off days until after the California trip.

That seems like at least the 2d time this season where Marte thought he had walked but a borderline pitch was called a strike and then he blasted a HR.

So on that runner hit by the batted ball play, does the rule say, as Gary stated, that it's Not an out if the ball goes past an infielder or is it only if a ball.passes an infielder who has a chance to make a play on it?

It clearly went past Pete before striking Franco but he just as clearly could not have fielded it.

Rules 5.06(c)(6), 6.01(a)(11):

The concept of the runner being in jeopardy after the ball goes past an infielder and strikes the runner in a situation where another infielder still has a chance to make a play on the ball applies ONLY when the ball PASSES the first infielder without being touched or deflected by him. This concept DOES NOT APPLY if the ball is touched or deflected by the first infielder, even though another infielder has a chance to make a play on the ball.

In other words, after a ball has been touched (deflected) by any infielder (including the pitcher), if the ball then strikes a runner (unintentionally on the part of the runner), the ball is alive and in play even if another infielder may be in position to field the ball. See Official Baseball Rules 5.06(c)(6) and 6.01(a)(11).

The reasoning for the above concept is that a runner cannot be expected to avoid a deflected ball while running and should not, therefore, be in jeopardy of being called out for being struck by such a deflected ball. Of course, a runner may still be guilty of intentional interference even after an infielder deflects the ball if the runner deliberately deflects the ball or allows it to strike him when he could have reasonably avoided it. The fact that the ball has been deflected by an infielder should not be taken as a license for a runner to interfere intentionally. See Official Baseball Rules 6.01(a)(6) and 6.01(a)(7).

After a batted ball has been touched (deflected) by an infielder, if the ball then strikes a runner (unintentionally on the part of the runner), it is alive and in play despite the fact that another infielder may be in position to field the ball. This is not the case if a fielder is making a play on the ball. Specifically, if a batted ball is deflected by an infielder and another infielder has a play on the ball, the runner must avoid the fielder. If the runner interferes with the fielder making a play— even though the ball has been touched by another fielder—the runner is declared out. Under the rules, a fielder making a play on a batted ball takes priority.

On the other hand, if a batted ball goes through or by an infielder (other than the pitcher) without touching the fielder and then strikes a runner immediately behind the infielder, the umpire must then determine if another infielder has a chance to make a play on the ball. If the umpire determines another infielder does have a chance, the runner is out. If the umpire determines another infielder does not have a chance, the ball is alive and in play.

The interpretation to be made with regard to the phrase “a fair ball goes through, or by, an infielder, and touches a runner immediately back of him” (Official Baseball Rules 6.01(a)(11), 5.06(c)(6)), and 5.09(c)(7)) is that this refers to a ball that passes through the infielder's legs, or by his immediate vicinity, and strikes a runner directly behind the infielder.

There's a lot of umpirial judgment in play here but the keys seem to be the word "through" (and not past) the initial fielder and the umpire's judgment of whether there's another fielder trying to make a play.

Re: IGT 05/31 - National at Mets - They Call it a Streak!

That rule book wording seems to support my interpretation that it's not as simply cut and dried as Gary's where the ball just needs to 'pass' an IF without regard as to whether or not the ball was field-able ... but it's not all that clear, is it.

Unbearably hot when we arrived, then for about 5 minutes it was, "man this breeze feels great" before it went directly to freezing our asses off up there. The slow-moving game didn't help ... in addition to the challenges, and the 2 mound visits, etc, Corbin worked at a snails pace and the Mets kept getting hits. Ceetar showed up and we went looking for cocktails but I couldn't find them in the promenade.

They honored Santanas no-hitter with a pregame ceremony including Santana, a grey-haired Josh Thole and Terry. Johan Jr. a righty, threw a wild first pitch to Josh Thole Jr., who made a good lunge to get it.

Biggest Tuesday Night Mets win since a 12-2 victory over Toronto on May 15, 2018. That was better known as the Devin Mesoraco Game, as he was 2-2 with 3 walks, a Homer, a double, and 5 runs scored.

Not 4 nothing but Trevor Williams has been a pretty useful guy, and it was good to see Drew Smith back. Williams warms up to Even Flow by Pearl Jam.

Luis Castillo shut out the Red Sox for 6.

Then I slurred my way through the intro to the Podcast. That cocktail was a vodka distilled with strawberry and honeyberry, and then mixed with lemonade, so kinda radler-ish. Pretty good imo, better than hard seltzer anyway, though I do have a soft spot for lemonade. By DogfishHead. I couldn't quite suss out where all the cocktails were or weren't, but definitely CF, which was roughly as far from your seats as possible.

It looks like the ruling on the runner hit by the ball is simply "put out" credited to the nearest infielder. Assumption being, I guess, that he would've been able to make a play on him.

I grabbed some 'mac and cheese kegs' and snuck in to sit with my Aunt in 141 for the last few innings, then got some pizza cupcakes on my way out. I miss Citi Field, this being only my second game since late 2019. (and one concert which, meh)

Oh that's definitely the correct scoring play when a baserunner is struck. The question is whether that particular play was ruled correctly.

Gary was adamant that it wasn't on account of the batted ball having "passed" Pete prior to the runner being hit (and he was definitely drilled ... right in the chest).

I wasn't so sure and neither the umps nor the Nats seemed to raise a peep.

So theoretically a slapped ball towards the left-side hole hits a runner running on the pitch from 2nd while the 3Bman was playing in for a possible bunt. That ball

would certainly have to be past him when it hit the runner even though the 3rd sacker had zero chance to field it. Last night that ball was definitely past Pete who

dove for it but didn't come all that close to snagging it. I think the rule was created so as to not give credit to the defense after having whiffed on getting an out

by fielding the ball, though the rule book section Edgy came up with is somewhat ambiguous.
