Minor League Rules Question

I'm following the St. Lucie game on MILB.com. It gives a pitch-by-pitch report.

Alex Ramirez just "struck out on an automatic strike".

I haven't heard of this before.

What is that?

Does some new rule (intended to speed up games) require the ump to call a strike if, say, the batter not take his place in the batters box in X amount of time?

Something else?

We're also seeing a limit on throw-overs to first in the minors.
