Re: Award A Met In 2022

In the newly created "Utility" category you will not find Luis Guillorme or Jeff McNeil but you will find Tommy Edman who is nominated at 2B and Daulton Varsho who is nominated at RF. To me, if you've played enough at a position to be worthy of a nomination at that position then you should not be nominated for the award created for players who move around the field.

Re: Award A Met In 2022

I like that the nominees for the utility player included a classic 2b/3b/ss utility infielder (Tommy Erdman), an infielder/outfielder (Brendan Donovan), and a catcher/outfielder (Daulton Varsho).

Sorry not to see the Mets classic 2b/3b/ss utility infielder (Luis Guillorme), or infielder/outfielder (Jeff McNeil) there.

I agree that nominating a guy as both a specialist and a generalist would seem to be beyond the spirit of the category.

Yeah that's dumb. But I feel like the GGs are the awards most often botched over the years in terms of awards given out.

The Marvin Miller award was created in 1997 as a players' choice award and recognizes the outstanding on and off-field performances of players.

Outfield prospect Omar De Los Santos is your Florida State League MVP.

Omar hit .272/.339/.459//.798 with 23 2B, 5 3B, 16 HR, and 62 RBI. He also stole 70 bases in 85 attempts. Both the power and the thieving represented breakthrough numbers for him as he led the circuit in both hits and stealz.

I hadn't seen this way of describing the Cleveland franchise ('dians) but I guess its a way to "honor" both the new name (GuarDIANS) and old (InDIANS)?

Re: Award A Met In 2022

It will be interesting to see how high (and even if) De Los Santos ranks on the Top Mets 20 prospect lists. He may have the "old for his level" label that lowers the ranking of some prospects who turned out to be just fine(e.g.- Wade Boggs).

I hope that was because of the reduction of playing opportunity when the minors contracted during COVID.

I think this guy can be very good.

McNubbin becomes the first Met to win a Silver Slugger since Yoenis Céspedes in 2016. He is the first to win the award as a secondbaseman since Edgardo Alfonzo in 1999. Catcher Mike Piazza has won the most Silver Slugger trophies as a Met, with five.

Ex-Met Brandon Drury becomes the first-ever National League winner of the award as a utility player for his work as a Red and as a Padre. Seeing as he hadn't hit a lick for three years before joining the Mets, I think there's some small reflected glory on the Mets organization for that one too.

Craig Kimbrel Braves 2012-2014 and Red Sox 2017

Lee Smith Cardinals 1991, 1992 and Orioles 1994

It's been a thing since 2019. MLB trying to do an All-Pro/All NBA sort of “After the season All-Star, all encompassing roster” set of awards

Metly selections;

2019

Pete Alonso First Team 1B

Jacob deGrom First Team SP (5 starters, 2 Relievers on each of the two 16-man squads)

2020

Jacob deGrom First Team SP

Michael Conforto Second Team OF (three OFs selected regardless of dominant/main position)

One last batch of Met awards for 2022:

Jay Horwitz honored with the Gil Hodges Unforgettable Fire Award earlier this month at the Queens Baseball Convention.

Starling Marte named Richie Ashburn Most Valuable Met by a relatively reputable local outlet.

Something Short of Satisfaction recognized with the Nikon Camera Player of the Year Award (a.k.a. the definitive Met vibe to emerge from the past twelve months).
