TWiB Notes - June 20 - 26

Frayed Knot
Jun 20 2022 08:14 PM

Braves actually have to play some major league teams this week, starting with SFG tonight and LAD next weekend.

Currently 1-1 in bottom 9 in hot 'Lanta

2 on, 2 outs, Braves batting

And just as I type that the Braves win.

SFG had a similar opportunity in top 9 w/1 out but K'd twice and didn't score.

Re: TWiB Notes - June 20 - 26

Brewers beating the Cardinals 2-0 in the eighth, sole possession of first place on the line.

Braves scratch out a walkoff 2-1 win over the visiting Gigantes, keeping pace 5 1/2 games behind the Mets.

Phils and Nats idle.

Damn Yankees win again.

Luis Castillo Watch: 5 IP, 4 ER, 6 K, 3 BB, 1 bases loaded HBP in a no-decision loss vs LAD. This was his worst outing in a while, but, you know, better than Carasco yesterday

Re: TWiB Notes - June 20 - 26

Yeah, but any pitcher can look goodish if you imagine bumping the guy who had the worst start in the most recent turn of the rotation — Carrasco one turn, Williams on another turn, Peterson on a third.

But it doesn't work that way. He's would displace a single guy who is presumably consistently a poorer choice than him. Assuming Carrasco is hitting the injured list and being replaced by Scherzer (neither of which is certain as of this post), the guy he'd displace would be Williams.

Asking if he's a consistently better performer than Williams simply gives me an answer of "-ish." But having Williams as a backup and a bullpenner certainly makes his addition a plus in and of itself, depending on what they give up.

But with the off days and the rehabbing pitchers, I think the Mets see a lot of moving parts, and probably are going to wait until the deadline to make their move, even if they've perhaps already got some tentative agreements in place.

But the deadline approacheth, so we'll see soon enough.

So do the Braves.

Better sooner than later.

The only thing that would change would be the price, which could rise if other clubs see the gap is closing.

You never want to seem (or be) desperate when negotiating a deal.

I'm not sure what you're saying. I don't get how "So do the Braves" is a response to "We'll see soon enough." Did you quote the passage you meant to quote?

If the claim is that prices go up as the deadline nears, I disagree.

Re: TWiB Notes - June 20 - 26

Ah. Well, they have 13 games and two off days before they meet the Braves

They have Taijuan Walker and Chris Bassitt and Trevor Williams lined up for the Miami series, and possibly Max Scherzer displacing Williams in that third game. We don't know yet if Carrasco's back is expected to be an ongoing issue, so it's not like they'll be going any deeper anytime soon.

I'm a little more concerned about the absence of Jeff McNeil from their offense.

I can't speak to all 29 blown calls (including extra innings), but seven of eight calls in that video sequence were favoring Chicago pitchers and screwing Toronto batters.

This was Tuesday's game, and Toronto's hitting coach Guillermo Martinez brought out the card before yesterday's game, brought up the performance, and got himself tossed before the opening pitch.

It's also why you shouldn't miss run scoring opps in the previous inning.

Not sure two runs with have scored on that double-turned-single even with better baserunning, but 2nd & 3rd with one out

sure gives you a better chance moving forward than merely 1st & 2nd

So the Astros move from the Mets directly to the Yanx ... although have to shuttle halfway across the country to do so.

'Stros scored three times in the top of the 1st ... and then gave it all back in the first four batters in the bottom half.

What was that line from a candy commercial a couple years back?: 'Not going anywhere for a while'

Game is national on MLBN btw

This game settled down after a 3R HR gave Houston a 6-3 lead in the 2nd

So how does Astro closer Pressley start the 9th inning with a 3 run lead in a stadium with a 250ft fence ... by going BB BB HR (Aaron Hicks) of course. Still no one out.

The HR was the Yanx first hit since the 1st inning and their third of the game.

The dozen runs scored in this game have come via four 3R HRs

Mahle is two years younger and currently making $2,000,000 less so he may be a tougher get from the Reds. Both are controlled through 2023.

The Yanx have been no-hit thru 7 by Houston's Cristian Javier

An Altuve HR in top 8 made the score 2-0

But at 115 pitches, Javier was pulled in favor of Hector Neris who promptly walked the leadoff hitter. Now one out later, he's threatening to walk the next guy.

The Yanx were, until a minute ago, being no-hit again.

They now have one (a HR of course) and trail 3-1 after 7

So that was 15 straight no-hit innings (16 when you toss on the 9th of Friday's game).

Shyeeeet, they only had 6 hits in the (Thurs) game they won and then 5 on Friday. This brings their grand total to 12 across 34 innings in this series.

Jus' sayin'... although they'll probably wind up winning this one so I should shut up.
