Enough of Houston. Enough of losing to Houston. Let's leave the home & home with something to show for it.

Taijuan takes up the cause vs this Verlander character. He's not any good, is he?

1:10 on SNY.

Escobar is 2-for-18 lifetime vs Verlander. Canha, also sitting, is 5-for-14 with a homer.

I don't want to overstate the value of getting José Altuve out to lead off the game, but it was colossally huge.

I was ready to cry "Bunt, Nimmo, bunt!" but doubling on the first pitch works.

Interesting thing about that inning to me was that there was nothing in the dirt. Even with the few breaking pitches Verlander threw, everything was up.

Re: IGT 6/29/2022: HOU@NYM — Don’t Leave Us This Way

The Mets haven't scored yet, and Verlander is Verlander and is going to make that tough, but I confess to feeling more enthusiasm than expected seeing a turn through the lineup not include Escobar.

Get right, Eduardo.

Re: IGT 6/29/2022: HOU@NYM — Don’t Leave Us This Way

Verlander has totally deGrommed this game, coming out awkward, making an adjustment, and becoming brutal somewhere between the start of the second and the start of the third.

Marte's popout to short center on the first pitch as the second Met batter of the game looms large.

The McNeil/Verlander matchups have been the most interesting part of this game, but so far Verlander has two Ks.

Really wish those two long ABs, by McNeil and Smith, amounted to something other than making Verlander rear back for a little extra.

Man, when your team's offensive highlights involve working deep counts twice, that tells ya something.

Re: IGT 6/29/2022: HOU@NYM — Don’t Leave Us This Way

This should be an eye-opening series:

-The Mets are a good but not elite team.

-An upgrade to 2 bullpen arms should a priority

-Some reallocation of Davis/Escobar's playing time needs to be considered; they're not getting it done. Another bat should be considered.

-Mets have beat no elite teams. 2-2 against LA; 0-4 against Houston. 1-2 against SD. Results against Giants/Cardinals/Brewers more encouraging but suggest the Mets are a pretty good team that likely could

Make the playoffs, not a very good team that would be expected to go far in the playoffs.

I don't believe bullpen arms are what's needed.

All the relievers in the world won't win you a game if you don't score.

2d time in 3 games when they screwed up early as Nimmo's leadoff double was wasted as 3 "All-Stars" did jackshit.

What do you think the Mets need? (Or would you just stand pat)?

Me, I'm worried that Drew Smith is on pace to blow past his career innings high by August and after him and Ottavino there's a whole lot of “eh” in the bullpen.

Getting shut out by Justin Verlander is not some great shame, and the Mets are, even despite the paucity of runs scored this week, third in the league in scoring runs. So while I agree that they also need to add a hitter, it is not the top priority.

I agree with this post for the most part, but not with the characterization of the Mets as a "good but not elite team". I think that the Mets are, at the very minimum, a very good team, if not even better than that. I wouldn't put too much stock in their lesser showing against the top teams listed in GWrecks post: the sample size of those games is tiny, and thus, not so reliable.

I do agree that the team could use some improvement. That's what the elite teams are always striving for. The Dodgers, for example, wouldn't be content with their awesome stable of MVP's and all-stars, and will stay up nights figuring out how to upgrade their 4th starter slot or their 7th best bat in the lineup, even if those are already solid players.

And the Mets are now poised to get deGrom and Scherzer back, two of baseball's best pitchers before their injuries. Getting an elite pitcher is almost always, the biggest and most significant upgrade any team could make because an ace, or top of the rotation pitcher always replaces the last pitcher in the rotation and so the upgrade from one pitcher to the other is tremendous. Times two. Because there's two aces on the way.

I think that if deGrom and Scherzer return as the aces they were just before their injuries, or anywhere reasonably close, the Mets are instantly transformed into a powerhouse. Plus there'd be domino effect benefits to their returns, such as less dependence on the bullpen and less need to score runs.

In the past 72 hours, I have heard that the Mets #1 need is relief pitching, starting pitching, and hitting.

Oh, I'd totally stand pat. I have big philosophical differences with how they're deploying their assets, but among the folks in the majors and in the minors and on the Injured List, they totally have the personnel.

It always seems like another reliever or two would make the difference, but if the Mets got 10 relievers, they would still seem to need two more.
