Re: TWiB Notes - June 27 - July 3

Early start (6:10) for the final game of the ATL/PHI series.

Braves loaded the bases w/no outs in top 2.. but then Nola got a K a a GiDP ball ... except that, after taking the flip from 2B, Didi Gregorius thought there were

already two outs so he never threw to 1st! Ooops ... runs scores, inning continues.

On the plus side, Philly is in the midst of slapping a Seven-spot on Ian Anderson in the bottom of the 2nd and there's still only one out.

In Wednesday night's game, Mark Appel made his ML debut out of the Phils pen, 13 yers after the Tigers drafted him in the 8th round out of HS (didn't sign),

ten years after the Pirates drafted him with the 8th overall pick out of Stanford (didn't sign) and nine years after the Astros drafted him with the #1 overall pick.

After reaching AA & AAA in both the HOU org (2011 - 2015) and PHI org (2016 & 2017) and making several top-100 prospect lists, he didn't play at all in 2018,

2019 or 2020. He returned to the Philly org last season and got the call up this week.

This leaves just the two NYC draft picks, Steve Chilcott and Brien Taylor, as the only 1/1 draft picks to never reach the major leagues.

I really don't mind if Ian Anderson sits this one out.

And with the Phils there to help him he probably will.

12-3 Phils, top five. 7 earned on Anderson's ledger

And speaking of an NL East team failing to get the 3rd out, the Nats allowed a run that shouldn't have scored Wednesday night because they failed to properly secure that all-important 4th out!!.

- Runners on 2nd (Park) and 3rd (Suwinski) for the Pirates, 1 out

- Ke'Bryan Hayes lines out to 1B but both runners failed to read the play (ball was caught just off the dirt) and ran anyway.

- the throw went to 3rd where they tagged out Park running from 2nd ... but Suwinski crossed the plate prior to the tag.

- So Suwinski's run ordinarily wouldn't count, right? ... except that the Nats have to appeal the fact that he never tagged up. And there are processes to appealing a play, one of which means you

have to do so prior to the ball being put in play again, OR, in the case of the 3rd out, Prior to the fielders leaving the field ... and the Nats left the field before realizing their omission.

The Pitt manager was out of the dugout pretty quickly and got the umps to confab. Davey Martinez on the other hand, asleep at the switch maybe?

So the run counts AND ... wait for it, the Nats wound up losing by a run.

I'd like to think that that's the kind of thing that rule book nerds like Buck (or Bobby) would have caught before it was too late.

btw: If the Nats HAD properly appealed that the runner on 3B never tagged it would have been recorded as a 4th out of the inning. It wouldn't change anything (aside from taking the run off

the board) and it's not like they'd only have to get two outs in the next inning but, for record keeping purposes, four put-outs would have gone into the books on that one.

And it turns out the Yanx can't hit Houston pitching either

Neglected to promptly update this week's edition of the Luis Castillo Watch but on Wednesday he whiffed 11 in 6 Innings in a win over the Cubs. Mets "looking" at him, says Jon Heyman. Thanks Jon

they should probably know what he looks like by now.

Was a lot of coveting of Castillo on the recent episode of Mets On Tap, fwiw.

You can file this under "The Problem with Angels" — which I guess would have made a good thread title, but I'm not sure this is thread-worthy.

Bill Hasselman, Angels catching coach, has taken over the team in the absence of acting interim manager Ray Montgomery, who is under suspension, having taken over in the absence of interim manager Phil Nevin, who is also under suspension, who had taken over in the absence of manager Joe Maddon, who got the axe.

It's just a thing, but it's not every team that gets to find out who the fourth guy on their manager depth chart is — although, I guess we can probably conclude that Dick Scott is #3 for the Mets, having taken over as bench coach during Glenn Sherlock's absence.

Zach Wheeler wheelin' and dealin' a 4-hit shutout to StL thru 8 innings

1-0 Phils as they come to bat in bottom 8

Oooops, they're not in the 8th in Philly, they're only in the 6th (time to get the eyes checked?) ... and now it's 4-0 Philly and that's going to be all for Wainwright.

Keep in mind it was yes, Luis Castillo behind that victory over ATL yesterday (7 Innings, 1 ER, 6 K) and that means we won't face him this week, so it's like HE'S ALREADY ON THE METS.

Re: TWiB Notes - June 27 - July 3

Blue Jay manager Charlie Montoyo mysteriously pulled first base coach Mark Budzinski in the third inning on Saturday, before they both left the dugout for the remainder of the game. The clubhouse was closed after the game and all that was said was that they were attending to a personal matter.

Turned out yesterday to be the worst sort of personal matter, as Budzinski's teenage daughter had died. I don't think we yet know how, and one kinda wants to know and wants to never know.
