IGT 07/13/22 - NYM@ATL

Jul 13 2022 05:35 AM

It's a 12:20 PM ET start. Chris Bassitt against Charlie Morton

https://www.mlb.com/gameday/mets-vs-braves/2022/07/13/661505#game_state=preview,lock_state=preview,game_tab=,game=661505

Morton started the season poorly but has pitched well in his last 5 starts. Bassitt has been good but the Mets need him to be great today. My theory is that he pitches better with Max watching him. It's time for Pete to get his head out of his ass and mash. It's time for Escobar to wake the frig up. It's time to win this game and win the series.

Here's your weather forecast for Atlanta: https://weather.com/weather/hourbyhour/l/07e62f1430a32035f6a554b04a77f7bd4a9e79018178e06edcea8fd25eecf6dc

Big Game Gaydar activated.

Often this year, the Mets have pleasantly surprised us even when they looked bad going in, like today does. What I'm saying is, today is the kind of situation the Mets biff seemingly 90% in any of the last six years, unless it's very early in the year (2020), or long after it matters anymore (2019). So not to put too much meaning on 1/162nds of a season, but this is why the Gaydar exists, and when we gotta believe yyybbb

Wow.

I think it's clear that we can kinda no longer hoping that Smith can find himself. We're at the point where we need it to happen.

Dom Smith's streak of 102 consecutive games with at least 1 plate appearance and 0 home runs is tied for 45th-longest in Mets history. The upper echelons of the list (per Baseball Reference's searchable Stathead) is littered mostly with Bud Harrelson types. Buddy has six streaks of more than 100 games games without a homer. A couple of names you wouldn't instinctively expect to see with longer steaks than Dom's include John Stearns (whose 46 HRs as a Met matches Dom's total) and young Wayne Garrett (though he blasted a World Series homer in the midst of that 1969-1970 regular-season void).

The point here: Dom really needs to go yard.

For a meaningful number of weeks there, the Mets had, like, five guys seemingly qualified to hit behind Alonso, and this lineup seems kind of like Buck's way of telling them they've all lost that status.

If Gary is mystified that Austin Riley (or Lindor or Nimmo or Taijuan) aren't All-Stars, it's because David Bednar and Joe Mantiply are due to that dopey, antiquated "every team" rule.

As you can see (and continuing beyond the Top 50), there's a feast of middle infielders, non-Piazza type catchers, aging pinch-hitters, youngsters getting the hang of their craft like Turner, Garrett and Joel Youngblood, singles hitters who occasionally connected (like Dave Magadan)…and Dom Smith.

Dubble for Guillorme plates one and might have plated two if not for the stands getting in the way and the Mets not running with a 3-2 count on their best contact guy.

Of course if they were running, the thirdbaseman might have moved over to cover and made the play on the hit.
