No Sleep 'Til ...!: Brooklyn Cyclones in 2022

The Brooklyn Nine won a pistol of a game yesterday, trailing 2-1 into the bottom of the seventh before centerfielder and Flushing native Jaylen Palmer stepped up to the plate with the bases loaded and crushed a grand slam, providing the difference in the Cyclones 5-2 win. [YOUTUBE]JJWqmHn1x6g[/YOUTUBE] Jaylen had been gaining some prospect traction (most sites placed him in the top 15), but transitioning from shortstop/infielder into centerfield. One might presume that was because he was blocked at shortstop, but he's been hitting just terribly most of this year, so it was looking like the development team had bigger problems than Jaylen being blocked. He has been showing power in between racking up piles of strikeouts. He's a strapping, athletic, Starling Marte-type, only bigger (6'4", 208), and maybe minor-leaguing in your hometown is a bad idea (he stunk in Brooklyn last year, also, but was much better in St. Lucie. If you'd prefer rooting for an out-of-towner over a Holy Cross High School kid, you might turn your eyes a few degrees toward right field. There you'll find Newtown, Pennsylvania's own Brandon McIlwain. Brandon was a Cal-Berkeley player who had gone unpicked in the abbreviated draft of 2021. He's one of the oldest Clones, but he's been hitting like a vet, leading the team with a .284 / .377 / .446 // .822 line. If you recognize his name, it may be because he's a veteran of big time college football, having the rare distinction of throwing a touchdown pass in both the SEC (as a South Carolina Gamecock) and the Pac-12 (as a Cal Golden Bear). Now he's a Met prospect getting better every month, logging a .676 OPS in April, an .872 in May, and a .926 so far in June. Apart from having a name that's a Batman sound effect, Nick is a lefthander out of Minnesota, and that's the kind of Mets origin story that ends with you getting your number retired. Through six starts, he's thrown 23 innings and put up a Koosmanian 2.74 ERA, striking out 25 and walking but five. FIVE!!! Hartwig, the savior of yesterday's game, has yet to allow a run in 8 2/3 innings with the Clones, and in fact has only allow four hits and two walks while striking out 13. Grant started his sweet run a couple of weeks back picking up one of those classic mopup saves — getting the S added to his register for pitching three innings to finish the game, despite a 14 run lead. EIGHT!! Holy shit, right? But they had a period last month where they were rained out two-games out of three for like two weeks. Both teams intend to pitch TBD in the opener, so I imagine his arm will be real tired. Hopefully, they'll use this epic showdown to make up some ground between the second-place Rocks and their fourth place selves, where they sit 13 1/2 games out in the South Atlantic League North Division, which is geographically just a really stupid place for a Brooklyn team to be.
