And His Other Brother Gary

Not his brother in captaincy Carter. Not his brother in boothdom Cohen. But Keith's actual brother Gary Hernandez.

That he credits his brother with at least a portion of that success is no throwaway kindness; perhaps no one had more of an impact on Hernandez's mental state throughout his career than Gary -- his older brother, mentor, travel companion and closest confidant.

So, when Mets officials asked Hernandez whom he would like to catch his ceremonial first pitch on Saturday during his number retirement festivities at Citi Field, Keith did not hesitate in naming Gary.

“I kind of consider myself his reality check,” Gary Hernandez said. “To me, he's my younger brother. He's not Keith Hernandez the superstar.”

On the eve of the retirement of No. 17, Anthony DiComo profiles the oft-referenced older brother in California.

It's a real interesting part of the mid-eighties Mets story — Hernandez and Carter, the two captains of similar drive but otherwise very different temperaments and values, each had an older brother who preceded them into the professional life. But whereas Keith's brother accepted his career plateauing as Keith's rose toward the MLB ranks, Carter's brother resented it. And (I think) both of their memoirs of the time recount Carter being openly envious of Hernandez.

You can see where Carter's personality was such that it would be easy for a family member to resent his success, but Keith seems like he was jerky enough in his own way, and yet Gary (Hernandez) always seemed to be happy and supportive to see his brother break through in the path he started.

Those type of brotherly relationships appear a lot in biography and literature. It didn't particularly work out that way with my brother and myself, but stories like that sure fascinate me.

Yeah the Carter-Hernandez brother contrast thing is really facsinating
