Re: Memoreeds

He's still here, pitching under the name of Drew Smith.

They are the same guy, aren't they?

He didn't deserve to be cut based on his last outing.

No, they're very different.

I know. It's a running joke. I keep saying they're the same and you keep correcting me.

But that's really my only memory of him.

Nobody should leave us memory-less.

Interesting delivery. Less than compelling results.

I don't like it when the Dodgers claim him.

Re: Memoreeds

He was better last year as a 52 than he was this year as a 72.

Last August he was taking the hit, throwing a multi-inning sting against the Dodgers after the starter (Carrasco?) got knocked out. The Mets were down something like 6-1. Needing Reed to throw multiple innings was important enough that he was even sent up to the plate for what I guess must've been his first career plate appearance. With Max Scherzer on the mound and Jonathan Villar on second he bounced one over the Scherzer's head.

Villar retreated to second, and the Dodger shortstop smelled and easy two. He swiped at Villar, only to have the Mets best baserunner of 2021 dance out of his way, so he went for the sure out, only it wasn't so sure, with Jake Reed tearing ass down the line, ultimately beating the throw and calling himself safe just in case the umpire needed some help.

Villar turned around advanced to third on the attempt, and beat the firstbaseman's throw. Mets showing some life against the Dodgers at home in Queens! Awesome!

Unfortunately, the fuckup only further enraged Scherzer and the Dodgers. Villar went on to score but the Dodgers would pummel the Mets thereafter, beating them something like 15-4, despite Reed's multiple innings of shutout relief.

In general, I don't trust guys who don't stride directly toward the plate. Some sidearmers like him step like 15 degrees or so off center when they throw, and it saps speed and gives batters a better sightline to track the ball.

The Metly Sons of Robert Reed, Ranked
•
Rick

  •
Addison

  •
Steve

  •
Darren

  •
Jake

  •
Jeremy
  •
I thought for sure he'd pass Darren, who represents Minimal Acceptable Reediness, but sadly he did not.

Worth noting that he came like he went. The Mets grabbed him when the Rays tried to sneak him through waivers, a week after the Rays grabbed him from the Dodgers the same way. Now, the still-bitter Dodgers are trying to correct history.

It is kinda troubling that a really good team says thanks we'll take

him off your hands if your really good team doesn't want him.

    We'll see.

    Re: Memoreeds

I find myself always excited when the Mets possess a reliever with an unusual delivery. It's one thing I admired about Omar-- he seemed to like that too, and usually always wanted 1 on his staff--to a fault even, when he traded Joe Smith and seemed to think that getting the non-Putz back from Seattle... Sean (not Shawn) Green, was the same thing.

Also, I want to put these guys into what I want to say is a tradition of unusual-delivery guys, acquired on the cheap, who actually become good Mets, like Terry Leach or Pedro Feliciano, even when the odds are long against them doing so.

So I kind of thought, especially during his early appearances "Reed! He could be one of them!" at least till he got hurt. Then, he crossed categories in my mind from "Exciting Unusual Delivery Guy" to "One-Promising Stealth Guys Who Got Hurt And Now I'm Not Nearly As Sure Of Anymore." And those guys get claimed by other teams midseason.
