Tomorrow's Kwiz Today

This isn't an easy one. I'm going to bed so now you too can sleep on it and answer tomorrow.

Name the top ten winningest MLB pitchers from Venezuela. Bonus points if you can name any of the top five savingest pitchers from La Tierra de Gracia.

One answer per post. No answering in consecutive posts. Yada-yada-yada. Yabba-dabba-doo.

Re: Tomorrow's Kwiz Today

Well, if Gwreck's up, I guess we can trade off guesses without two-in-a-rowing it. Venezuelan Carlos Carrasco is captured on a 2022 TCG R&R card, pitching on One-Hit Wonder day, a festive Mets day adopted by Steve Cohen based on my personal recommendation, which the Mets now hold once or thrice a year. On One-Hit Wonder day, a pitcher who had once pitched a complete game one-hitter for the Mets is honored. The outfield walls are decorated with 45RPM sleeves of memorable one-hit wonders and the one hit wonders play all game long. Gary Gentry was the honoree on the day Carrasco pitched. Gentry was flown in and put up at a 4-star NY hotel and was also awarded an olive green Amana refrigerator for participating.

This is actually an interesting kind of kwiz--and I'm, like done contributing answers -- because it reminds me of something I didn't know that I didn't know.

I feel like, at least a little, I actually can detect small differences, if not really express them, between Venezuelan-born position-players and other Latin position players, but the same does not hold true for me for pitchers, so I need to know them more deeply.

At this point in the quiz, my best strategy would be to think about Latin pitchers with about as many victories or careers like Santana, then just hope they're actually from Venezuela.

    Or like, get some clues

    Re: Tomorrow's Kwiz Today

OK, I was thinking in terms of clues. We have TEN guys remaining. Firstly, all of these guys pitched in the 21st century. We've had Venezuelans in baseball since 1939, but it is in the latter day when they came to MLB in such high concentration. So, some of these guys may be easy to confuse and conflate with others, but there's a good chance you have a passing familiarity with most of them.

Beyond that I'll list them all by the team they had their most wins (or saves with) and then list them all in terms of an interesting factTM about them. The two lists will not correspond with each other in terms of order.

Omar Daal is 12th in Venezuelan MLB wins, with 68. It is a fine guess but it will not avail you.

I won't dock you because I'm not really keeping score on this one.

I'll throw in another hint. The dude that got the attempted murder conviction was also the father of a big-time Mets prospect. At least, his son was pretty big-time at the time of his signing, and quickly started making top-ten lists, but he topped out in Brooklyn, back when Brooklyn meant the short-season high-A NY-Penn League.

His dad's prosecution was going on while he was trying to get his career off the ground so maybe that's part of why things didn't work out.

Wilson Alvarez is correct! Yer man won 102 games in the majors, 67 with the White Sox. He also went to the Sox along with Scott Fletcher and Sammy Sosa for Harold Baines and Fred Manrique. Not Texas' finest hour!

Omar Oliveras won 77 games, which would place him 10th on our win list ... if he hadn't been born in Puerto Rico and raised in the U.S.

Omar Minaya is here to school you kids: Venezuela does not hold exclusive rights to the name Omar.

I don't want to lead anybody straight to the treasure here, but the guy who did seven years for attempted mur-diddly-urder, and who sired a big-shot Mets prospect that didn't pan out, also has one clue I could give you that 100% of you would get in a second.

If you step back far enough, you can frequently spot to see different patterns of names coming out of Venezuela than might be coming out of other Caribbean countries. Obviously a name can come from anywhere, but such an effort can lead you in a Wilson Alvarez-y way.

Is a first cousin of Alcides Escobar

    Kelvim Escobar?

There you go! Kelvim is our guy! Exactly 100% of the Kelvims in MLB history are Venezuelan!! While I abhor answers phrased as questions, I celebrate Gwreck's answer because Kelvim is not only our seventh-winningest Venezuelan pitcher, but had the saves list gone to 10, you all would have seen that Kelvim is also our seventh-savingest Venezuelan pitcher, and then Gwreck could have really raked in the fake points!

    Re: Tomorrow's Kwiz Today

    You've got the right guy!

Felipe Vazquez, whose nickname was "Nightmare," lived up to it in the worst way, and though the only organization he currently represents is the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, by the time his career screeched to a hault in 2019, he was fifth all-time in saves by a Venezuelan guy.

We can actually cross a second guy off our list also, because since this quiz started, Martin Perez has added a win to his career total, giving him sole possession of 10th place on the win list. Falling off the list and out of our kwiz is Carlos Silva, who amazingly once threw 188 1/3 innings in a season, giving up 25 homers, but only nine walks.

Sharpie did the hard part coming up with Vazquez. That gives us only one winner and two saviors yet to be discovered, both of which have come VERY close to being guessed!

Yeah, I'm sorry I didn't get to this earlier. Good for you, as you are dead on. Ugueth is our Expos guy, the father of onetime hotshot Mets prospect Juan Urbina, and quite sadly, an ex-con who served seven years for attempted murder. For our purposes, he's the guy who saved the second-most MLB games among all Venezuelan-born big leaguers. The others aren't even particularly close.

Well, congratulations to Carlos Carrasco for catching Kevim Escobar since the launching of this quiz, and keeping himself a moving target.

Our remaining starter has a pair of consonants in his first name that you almost never see together, apart from Venezuelans. In fact, seeing these two consonants together in an otherwise Spanish-ish name is a pretty solid clue that you that you are dealing with a Venezuelan.

Our one missing reliever pitched in the post-season five straight years, from 2015 to 2019, including against the Mets.

    Maybe Yoervis Medina?

I apologize for having missed this guess at the time. Yoervis Medina totaled two saves, which ties him for fortieth among Venezuelan MLB-ers, along with ex-Met Luis Avilán, among others.

Remember that the guy we are looking for played with the Cubs, Astros, and Diamondbacks, doing his most damage with the Cubs, and pitched in the post-season five straight years. Yoervis Medina, mostly a Mariner, saw no post-season action. We've also established that the guy we're looking for pitched against the Mets in the post-season.

I'll add that his team advanced to play the Mets in the post-season only after he saved the series clincher in the previous playoff round.

Let's stick with Venezuela, only going with hitters this time. Name the top 10 Venezuelan home run hitters, along with the top five Venezuelan base stealers in MLB history.

I don't have complete data, but I believe he is additionally the all-time leader in quintuplets by a Major Leaguer from Venezuela, with five. Six kids total.
