I'm not sure I have a point. I guess that I want first whether or not a bye is attached to it, because of what it represents, and maybe (or probably not so much) the team is more about getting in the playoffs and having the freshest, strongest, healthiest team when they get there, especially if they aren't playing for a bye. To the extent that I have a point, I guess that's my point. I want first a little more than it might rationally be worth.

There are no more one game series under MLB's new playoff format. Also, there wont be any travel days in the 1st round. The team with the better record/seed will host all the games.

I just wish that the fight for it weren't so artificially contrived.

Based on how the season is shaking out, there's a compelling argument that first place - but second seed - is what the Mets want. The division winner without a bye (Milwaukee) will play the lowest-ranked wild card team (likely St. Louis or Philadelphia). The other two wild cards (almost certainly the NL East second place team and San Diego) will play each other. For obvious reasons, playing San Diego is unappealing. Then, in the second round, the first seed (LA) gets the winner of the 4/5 matchup. The second seed (hopefully Mets) get the winner of the 3/6 matchup. Again, for obvious reasons, playing San Diego or Atlanta is unappealing. This year, being the first seed is only really helpful in providing home field advantage for the NLCS (and possibly World Series). (Needless to say, MLB should change this so that the top seed faces the weakest team in round 2…but these are the rules we have for this year).
