Appropriately, the 46th state to enter the Union was Oklahoma:

Though lovingly referred to as the “Cowboy State,” Wyoming's true nickname is the “Equality State.” And for good reason. On December 10, 1869, Wyoming passed the first unconditional law in the U.S. permanently guaranteeing women their inherent right to vote and hold office.

The Mets playoff magic number is 39.

That's a more important countdown. I want the division, more out of wanting the franchise to finally get back-to-back division titles, but to erase last year's collapse, and 2007's, where two teams played in a Game 163 tie-breaker for the Wild Card that weren't the Mets, sewing up a postseason spot is a goal that should be watched with the same scrutiny.

North Dakota, the 39th state, gained statehood the same day as its neighbor to the south. This is from Wikipedia:

North Dakota was admitted to the Union on November 2, 1889, along with neighboring South Dakota, as the 39th and 40th states. President Benjamin Harrison shuffled the statehood papers before signing them so that no one could tell which became a state first; consequently, the two states are officially numbered in alphabetical order.

North Dakota is most likely known as "The Peace Garden State" because it partially houses the International Peace Garden, which overlaps the international border between the United States (US) and Canada. Part of the garden is in the US state of North Dakota, while part of it is in the Canadian province of Manitoba.

Bascially we're down to a two game lead over a team that's the defending champs and has been 8.5 games better than us since the first of June.

So not only can this lead disappear inside a 48 hour span but the fact that we've got the Dodgers coming up makes it almost likely.

It seems like this whole winning the division strategy thing comes down to six words: But we've got an easy schedule!

Since June 1, the Braves have gone 41-6 (.872) against teams not in position to make the playoffs (“non-playoff teams”). That seems…unsustainable. Against playoff teams, they're 15-14.

In their final last 36 games, the Braves have 20 games against non-playoff teams and 16 against playoff teams.

—-

Since June 1, the Mets have gone 28-10 against non-playoff teams, a more realistic .737 winning percentage. Against playoff teams in the same period, 17-19.

In their final 36 games, the Mets have 6 games against playoff teams, and 30 against non-playoff teams.

—-

And they have a 2 game lead. There's a reason FanGraphs has the Mets with a 78% chance of winning the division. (And a 100% chance of making the playoffs).

Also: 35.

The Magic Number for a playoff spot (the third Wild Card) is only 25, over the Brewers. A much easier number to hit. The Mets are 12 games ahead of Milwaukee.

The Magic Number for the division title is as far East as it's been so far this year, in West Virginia. The 35th state entered the Union on June 20, 1863, splitting from Virginia during the Civil War.

Why is Kansas called "The Sunflower State"?

More than 3,000 years ago, American Indians utilized the native sunflower for food; over the centuries, the seeds were cultivated and the modern, oil-rich sunflower emerged. In 1903, Kansas declared itself the “Sunflower State,” naming the wild native plant as its official flower.

Cobalt is named after the dickish Germanic mythical creature kobold. The Democratic Republic of the Congo produces the majority of the cobalt extracted in the world, with DRC's distant neighbor Canada coming in an appropriately distant second place.

it has traditionally been a favorite for it's use in dyeing (cobalt blue) but is chiefly used today to create super allows such as those used in Lithium cobalt oxide (LiCoO2) batteries.

Yeah. Football is deeply embedded in the culture of Pennsylvania and especially Texas, which is probably the national capital of amateur football. But I don't think the states themselves have anything to do with those state greetings postcards. They're produced by private business interests.

Now that's curious. It's like a football field, but they don't seem to be playing football. No goalposts, no gridiron markings, about six or seven on a side, and the non-playing members of the team appear to be positioned at the ends of the field instead of on the sidelines.

Also, silos inside the stadium, ruining all views for the seats at the north end!

    From https://www.senclewises.com/statehood.html:

Statehood date retroactive due to 150 year screwup. August 7, 1953, the Ohio legislature corrected the fact that they had never legalized statehood. President Thomas Jefferson signed bill admitting Ohio on February 19, 1803, but the first legislature did not meet until March 1, 1803, yet overlooked passing legislation for statehood.

All of their electoral votes from 1804 through 1952 should be retroactively nullified. I wonder how many election outcomes might be tilted the other way if that happened?

    who?

Mike Glavine of Concord, MA. He had 7 PAs for the Mets in 2003. He's now head coach for Northeastern University and runs an expensive baseball camp.

    Mmmmm Fran Healy

I like the idea that Cooby has a shrine in her home devoted to all the greats, giving special pride of place to images of Fran Healy and Coolio.

As I suspected was the case, this thread was started in the aftermath of winning 4 of 5 from the Braves in early August.

The problem is that, since then, we've lost 5 of 6 head to head.

It's almost like these are two really good teams who are evenly matched and recency bias can make us look worse and them look better than they really are. Or vice versa.
