Re: CPF's 5 LIVE Albums I Can't Live Without

I'm pretty sure we ran this thread several years ago. But here goes. I'm submitting my list real quick, off the top of my head. I'm sure in a few days, I'll remember other live albums that I would've preferred to list here, if I only remembered today:

1. Get Yer Ya Ya's Out. Peak Rolling Stones at their performing best. Best Stones lineup, including, naturally, wunderkind Mick Taylor, the smooth blues guitar prodigy who broke through with John Mayall's Bluesbreakers as an 18 year old after Peter Green left to form the original Fleetwood Mac. There are many recent Stones concerts available for viewing and listening on the web these days. A few months ago, I decided to watch the one directed by Martin Scorsese. It was, I thought, unwatchable. I didn't make it through the second or third song. Just awful. Awful arrangements. Awful guitar playing. They're really old and it shows. If I didn't know the Stones legacy and was watching that band for the first time when I saw that video, I'd have no idea that I was watcihing Rock and Roll royalty and that the songs they were playing sound great in original studio format.

2. Cheap Thrills, Big Brother & the Holding Company featuring Janis Joplin. Janis at her best. Big Brother was not nearly as polished as the seasoned studio musicians Janis would later dump Big Brother for. But they had the chemistry and the natural energy that wasn't forced or contrived. This is kind of a cheat as some of this album is comprised of studio cuts, including their huge hit, Piece of My Heart. But it's mostly a live album.

3. Hot Tuna. Acoustic blues played live by Jorma Kaukonen in some coffehouse. Intimate setting where, I think, you can hear the waitstaff delivering drinks to the customers. Check this one out.

4. Live at Leeds, The Who. Straight up Rock and Roll. Played loud. A live set in between Tommy and Who's Next. Which means that up to that point, The Who hadn't yet put out a bad album. They would. Many times over.

5. The Allman Brothers Live at the Fillmore East. The album that gave ABB national recognition.

5. That Talking Heads live album where David Byrne wears the big white suit.

Nevermind. What's far more interesting is that we share two entries. That's 40% of the list.

Here's an honorable mention or asterisk entry because it's not really a live album. But in 2003, Led Zeppelin released a multi disc DVD set which includes a 1970 concert from the Royal Albert Hall. It's awesome and must see if you're into LZ. It's on Youtube in its entirety. I think it's better than any LZ bootleg and easily better than their official live releases.

(I also listened to Dire Straits Alchemy a lot, and I liked it for bringing to life some of the too-boring-as-recorded songs they'd do ("Once Up A Time in the West" to me, represents one of the widest gaps between goodness as recorded/goodness on the live album scientists have ever discovered, I think.)

I agree, but the Lou Reed album has some impressive gappage too.

I think Lou and perhaps his band may be at that perfect peak between "Cocaine is helping me" and "Cocaine is destroying me."

The same may be true of that Zevon album. Hmmm... .

Re: CPF's 5 LIVE Albums I Can't Live Without

Not necessarily a top five, but I'll mention it here since I doubt anyone else will: CHICAGO AT CARNEGIE HALL.

Essentially Chicago I, II, & III recorded live and released on a, then unheard of for pop/rock, four LP set. It came at a time when folks were just starting to figure out how to produce clean live recordings (the venue likely helped there) and featured probably the band at their peak prior to their gradual slide into the land of Lite-FM.

I saw Joe Jackson ('82?) at one of those 'Concerts on the Pier' that they used to do back in the day over on the west side.

He was touring behind the NIGHT AND DAY album and, at least on that leg of the tour, was using no guitars at all.

Was still quite good, I just remember thinking that the whole concept of a rock group without a guitar was so unusual.

Marshall Crenshaw opened. I actually went mostly to see Crenshaw but came away more impressed by Jackson's set.

Neil Young, Live at Massey Hall (1970)

The Band, Rock of Ages (1972)

Jethro Tull, Nothing is Easy (Live at the Isle of Wight Festival, 1970)

Jimi Hendrix, Band of Gypsys (1970)

Little Feat, Waiting for Columbus (1978)

My son in law gave me a few CD's for Christmas...

One of the CD's is: Saxon "The Eagle Has Landed 40 Live" which is a newer collection of Saxon live songs that comprise 3 CD's and has 40 songs on it

fyi, the other CD's that he gave me:

Saxon: "Denim and Leather"

Saxon: "Strong Arms of the Law"

Judas Priest: "Reflections 50 Metal Years of Music"

The first 2 I already have on vinyl but nice to have a digital copy of them...and the JP one, has songs that I already have on vinyl and/or CD, but have a few live songs as well (including "Beyond the Realms of Death" with Les Binks on drums from 1979 in NYC)

I'd like to note that, while lovers of J. Giels Band's Full House are certainly correct in recognizing it as a career standout, what a terrible cover it has for a career-defining live album. Rather than tease the audience with a blurry, stage-lit photo that hints of the excitement of being at a show, the artwork looks like it's from a rushed-to-market album from an aging country star who didn't return any usable prints from his last photo shoot. It doesn't even actually depict a full house!

I don't play card games other than Cribbage, but isn't a "full house" supposed to be 3 of a kind and a pair? So the album cover wouldn't really be a full house, but 3 jacks and either 2 kings or 2 queens would be

I'll put in an honorable mention for Elton's 11-17-70 (or, if you bought it overseas, 17-11-70)

Never intended to even be an album, it was a live radio concert [WABC-FM just prior to it turning into WPLJ] that was rushed into production shortly afterward in an attempt

to thwart the proliferation of bootlegged copies hitting the streets as well as to capitalize on Elton's early success and particularly to bring to the masses his live show appeal

which had been displayed at his U.S. debut show at L.A,'s Troubador a few months earlier.

Just a three piece band -- piano, bass, drums -- but still loud and raucous at times. Certainly not one of his biggest sellers, but his career was right on the verge of taking

off so I'm sure those who did purchase it were a step ahead in seeing what was coming.

The album title was a band inside joke -- the joke being to have the album appear to reference the poker hand when in reality, the band was referring to a packed concert venue. Ha ha ha. Not! The poker hand on the album cover isn't a "full house" and the giveaway that the album cover was an inside joke is supposed to be the "winking" queen. Because queens don't wink. At least not the queens depicted on playing cards. Misdirection. Whatever. Great live album. Not so great inside joke.

The fact that a set list exists from 45 years ago is both amazing and somewhat disturbing.

As four of the first seven songs on that list indicate, the concert was held at night.

what I think is funny is that the setlist from the "warmup band" that I saw there in 1981 is posted but the headliner is not

I love Setlist.FM.

Check it out. Springsteen joined in the night Patti Smith debuted "Because the Night."

Cool, surprised that it mentioned that the fire Marshall's shutdown the show early due to over crowding

Setlist.fm is amazing. This is the set list from my all time favorite show ever attended, the Rolling Stones Steel Wheels tour, 10.26.89, where I sat in short left/center field at Shea, ten rows from the stage.

25 songs? that's getting your money's worth...Looks like Keith gave Mick about a 10-15 minute breather in the middle of the show

I never saw ACDC in concert, however when we were teenagers, we went to this giant movie theatre in Albany, NY and watched a concert film that was filmed just before Bon Scott's death: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AC/DC:_Let_There_Be_Rock

We all ran off to the porta potties during those songs. I can recall running back to the opening of Paint it Black.

It's a great album! I have some minor beefs. "After All" is an awful opener. I leave if off my playlist and start with "Mob Rules." And RJD could talk a little less - especially during the start of "Heaven and Hell."

Man, that's super. Criminally underrated hard rock, the Dio/Iommi stuff.

Re: CPF's 5 LIVE Albums I Can't Live Without

I suppose it is an odd song to open with, but they kicked ass with Mob Rules

as the second song. Woke everyone up lol. I was at that show and yes Ronnie

was a bit showy for the DVD I guess. I saw them again on the same tour at Mo-

hegan Sun with Alice Cooper and Queensryche and he barely spoke. Truthfully,

Alice shined that night over mighty 'Sabbath' but unfortunately didn't play this...
