IGT LAD@NYM, 8/30/2022

Taijuan Walker defends against somebody who hasn't yet been named, but likely is 0.0% Taijuanish.

The Dodgers finish up with Milwaukee while the Mets get their second no-travel day off in less than a week, kicking back at home, drinking lemonade, taking school photos of the kids.

The idiot who started this thread screwed up the all-important contextual details and wrote that the Dodgers were playing Milwaukee this evening. They were, in fact, taking on the Marlins in Miami.

Dodgers eke out a 3-2 win in the 10th, using five relievers to throw 5 2/3 innings, including 32 pitches over an inning and a third by Craig Kimbrel.

Only 9 starts this season for Heaney, the now 31 y/o one-time 9th overall draft pick of the Marlins, but his numbers how things are going in Dodger-land this year.

2019 ERA = 4.91 (18 Starts w/LAA)

2020 = 4.46 (12 - LAA)

2021 = 5.83 (23 - LAA & NYY)

2022 = 1.94 (all with LAD)

No we can't. They gave him garbage chances and not enough playing time. He'd been great for them his entire time and part of the reason they faltered last year is because they didn't play him. No one should be surprised he's got a 150 wRC+ and 4 HR with the Giants. Eppler gambled that recent small sample was more meaningful, and I'm not sure all these fringy platoon guys they got were a better bet.

Alas, let's hope Baty suddenly just goes all Conforto down the stretch/playoffs.

He has more PAs this year than any non-regular. He has negative defensive value, and put up middling numbers at the plate.

This certainly doesn't mean that the Ruf/Vogelbach platoon is the move they should have made. But just playing JD more was not the answer.

Ceetar
Aug 30 2022 09:49 PM
Re: IGT LAD@NYM, 8/30/2022

My point was he should've been a regular. And yes, they should've played him as the DH more often than not. He was league average for the Mets this year, though there were some stretches where he was hitting it real hard and not getting good results. Again, not surprised that that bad luck turned around.

Hell, Davis' .364 OBP since 2019 is tied for 7th with McNeil, only .001 behind Conforto and Guillorme. Baez's small sample was an outlier, and Canha and Nimmo are good. Vogelbach's .388 won't hold up either. He's been right there. Davis was solid and reliable in a way that guys like Vogelbach and Ruf and Naquin just haven't shown they can be. I worry those guys are going to get exploited and exposed by better teams with deep playoff bullpens that make it harder to force the platoon advantage all game.

Y'know for a team that's scored a grand total of three runs over the last two games via two solo HRs plus a three-base error, we sure do a lot of bitching

about a bullpen that gave up A run (on a cue shot double plus a stick-the-bat-out single) while being asked to cover 17 outs in those games.

Edgy MD
Aug 31 2022 09:09 AM
Re: IGT LAD@NYM, 8/30/2022

Yeah, too often it's easy to fall into the trap that there isn't enough relief pitching, and there is nothing anything less than an umblemished record that is acceptable for relievers.

But the guys we don't have, had we gotten them, would have displaced the guys we do have, and then they'd be the ones that are unacceptably imperfect. They wouldn't necessarily be better, and they might be worse, and if so, the Mets would have future talent invested in that worseness.

Aaron Loup was terrific in 2021, and that got him a three-year contract from the Angels and good for him, but so far in that contract, he's fallen back to the pack and just been another guy.

He's a frequent figure in Jomboy videos, though, because weird things seem to happen when he's on the mound.

The Mets have plenty of playoff bullpen options, including trusted starters such as Carrasco or Peterson (and Williams), as well as returning-from-injury options like Megill and Smith.

The real worry is, as noted, that the offense was insufficiently upgraded at the deadline.

SNY agrees that both are a concern:

https://www.sny.tv/articles/playoffs-nearing-mets-catching-lefty-relief-deficiencies
Instead of Rodriguez, it should've been Seth Lugo (who almost certainly won't be available Wednesday anyway) pitching a second inning. Lugo, by the way, has held lefties to a .184/.259/.263 line this season.

Rodriguez has had a few impressive moments this year, but has been a big disappointment overall, with a 5.17 ERA and 1.53 WHIP in 38.1 innings. That he was in a tie game in the seventh inning last night is a problem.

I read it, and no, and it says nothing about what he advocated for on Sunday.

The writer also contradicts himself by declaring that "the Mets are this starved for left-handed relief," but writing four paragraphs later, "Also a problem with regards to Rodriguez is the three-batter rule, which makes a pitcher like Rodriguez (who is very good against lefties but struggles against tough righties) a lot less valuable."

I guess he needs a good editor who would have caught that contradiction.

It was rhetorical question to which I pretty much knew the answer without having to read the piece.

The point being that it's always easy to pretend the scoreless inning from he previous game never happened but then knock the use of that same reliever after

he allows even a single run while arguing for a different guy instead, or for guys not currently on the team including those with one ML game under their belt,

or for someone who was once here but no longer is, or even for guys who were never ever a Met but theoretically possibly maybe could have had our lousy GM

only traded for him at the deadline and/or signed him in the off-season. Needless to say that none of those guys would, if used last night, have given up any

runs. Probably not even any hits.

Bottom line: bullpens are going to give up runs just like starters do and it's not going to work out where you can only use your most favored guys except in

games where there's a touchdown or more lead. The best team (by far!) this year used a waiver wire pickup to close out the game last night.

NYM team OPS-against is 674, 3rd best in the NL (behind LAD & ATL). Broken down it's 668 for the starters and 683 for the pen; that's not a wide gap and

if you want to break out the 683 OPS-A and pretend it's its own staff they would still rank 5th best in the NL - not against just other pens but against all

other 14 entire staffs.

We're always welcome to wish for better, of course, but do remember the old 'be careful what you wish for' warning. And if we're going to expect the pen

to get 17 outs over two razor thin games without allowing even a single run then we're going to be disappointed A LOT more often than not.
